This story is about an unexpected love that even the main characters themselves never saw coming. Two young adults, both freshly out of disappointing relationships, had sworn to stay single to not enter a new relationship, or at least not anytime soon. He is the brother of the narrator's sister-in-law, yet they had never met or even spoken to each other. A distant family connection, but a connection nonetheless, given the closeness of the two families. To them, the other was nothing more than a vague figure in family stories, names mentioned here and there, a few anecdotes, but nothing more.
Everything changes during a summer in Senegal. He arrives from France, traveling with the narrator's brother and his family for a holiday. The first time they lay eyes on each other marks the beginning of a silent observation, of glances exchanged. Amid the lively energy of family meals and shared conversations, they add each other on social media. A casual first message is sent. A shared secret is born: no one must know they are talking.
Soon, their virtual exchanges become more intense than the moments they spend together in person. What was meant to be a simple friendship turns into a daily bond built on confidences, laughter, and a sweetness they had stopped daring to hope for. The feelings they thought they had locked away begin to bloom before they even have time to understand them.
But in Senegal, love is never just a matter of two hearts. It is a matter of families, especially in their situation. Their secret glances, their knowing smiles during dinners, might not go unnoticed by everyone. And while their story is unexpected, it is also fraught with obstacles: What will happen when the family discovers that these two, who were meant to be nothing more than distant relatives, have grown close behind everyone's back? How can they reconcile this budding desire with the watchful eyes of their loved ones, the unspoken tensions, and the fear of shattering the family's delicate balance?
Between starry nights and stolen glances, they will have to confront a question far greater than their own past heartbreaks: Can their love as pure as it may be withstand the family storm that lies ahead? But also, is this true love, or merely a fleeting holiday fling? You will find out.
