But Marcus was left speechless when the man remarked.
"What are you talking about?... Martial arts, Qi, Masked men?... I don't understand what drugs you are taking, but this is the real world, kid."
"I'm 20."
"... Doesn't matter. Now get out of here before I have you arrested for wasting my time." The detective turned without sparing Marcus and Vera another glance, quickly making his way over to a van.
Of course, Marcus and Vera remained with the former staring a hole into the detective's retreating back.
"Something is weird."
"What is it?"
"That guy is lying," Marcus remarked with a frown.
Vera glanced at him and then at the detective. "Lying?"
"Mn, he's just like me but he acts like he isn't. It's strange." With a thoughtful expression, Marcus seemed to ponder for a moment.
"So what now?"
"... I have an idea but you might not like it."
"... What will you do?" Vera asked with a look of apprehension.
Marcus glanced at her with a mischievous smirk. "Watch."
"...Marcus."
Without waiting for her to complete her statement, Marcus picked up a stone lying on the ground beside him and taking a deep breath, imbued the stone with Qi before flicking it with his fingers.
Despite being an ordinary rock, it zipped past at a frightening speed, nearly resembling a bullet with its trajectory.
Vera glanced at the detective, terrified that the rock would harm him, but her expectations were proved wrong the next moment as the man turned round in a flash and hastily grabbed the rock.
Apart from his expression distorting slightly, the detective was fine, prompting Vera to believe Marcus's words.
'But why is he lying?'
"You f*****g bastard!" The detective bellowed in anger, drawing the attention of the cops present.
They alternated their gaze between Marcus and the detective, unsure of what had happened to elicit such a response from a man they knew to be quite calm and collected with his emotions.
However, hardly did they get the chance to ponder on this when the man ordered. "Arrest that young man!"
"..." Vera panicked as she glanced at Marcus only to discover the calm expression on his face.
'Why?'
Meanwhile, the police officers were left unsure of whether to do as instructed since it wasn't quite clear what transpired for Marcus to get arrested.
Of course, minor urging from the detective forced them to do as he said, quickly apprehending Marcus before handcuffing him.
"No, don't…" Vera was completely out of it, her mind a complete mess as she found herself unable to do anything but watch Marcus get taken away.
Meanwhile, the one seemingly in trouble merely smiled as he remarked. "Don't worry, I'll be fine."
Leaving those words behind, Marcus followed the police into their car before being driving to the station with the detective following closely behind.
Realizing that Marcus might not be in as much trouble as she thought, Vera calmed down slightly but still couldn't just sit and wait.
So she pulled out her phone and dialed a number.
***
2 hours later, in the Intercity police station, detention cell.
Marcus was kept in the cell with nothing but a bulb to provide a bit of lighting to the otherwise empty room.
With his arms tied behind his chair and his legs tied up as well, Marcus couldn't move but this did nothing to dampen his mood as he hummed a tune while staring at the door.
Soon enough, the sound of footsteps approaching was heard, after which the door flung open, and the detective from earlier walked in, an aggressive expression on his handsome visage.
"Oh, hey, it's you again," Marcus remarked smilingly.
The detective clicked his tongue as he looked behind him and after ensuring there was no one, he entered the cell and closed the door, locking it for added measure.
Then he approached Marcus to stand merely an arm's length away from him.
"Who are you and what do you know?"
"... How about you go first?"
Wham
The detective punched Marcus, taking the time to reinforce his fist with Qi.
Surprisingly, his attack merely caused Marcus to shift his face, not leaving any real damage.
"You are quite skilled for a Martial artist, huh?... Makes me wonder who exactly you are."
"Finally showing your true colors?" Marcus calmly asked as he glanced at the detective.
"You…"
"Do you have a hand in what happened to Mira?"
"Huh, what are you?... A jilted lover?"
"More like a private investigator."
"Heh, is that so?"
Wham
Yet another blow struck Marcus but he barely flinched as he kept his eyes on the detective.
"You know it's strange."
"Hmm…" the detective frowned deeply at Marcus's casual tone as he spoke.
"Why are you trying to hide that you are a martial artist?.... Where I come from, it's a reason to be proud."
"What do you know?"
"Hmm… not much, but I do know that martial arts aren't to be used to harm the innocent."
"Innocent?... Don't give me that bullshit. No one is innocent!"
"..." Marcus turned silent as he studied the detective intently.
It was easy to tell that he was in a state of emotional upheaval.
Whatever the case, the situation Marcus had on his hands didn't seem to be simple at all.
Just then, there was a beep sound causing the detective to withdraw for a moment.
He reached into his pocket and retrieved a small button phone.
He turned it on, and he found a message waiting for him.
Once he'd opened it and inspected its contents, his expression distorted further as he glared at Marcus.
"So it's you?"
Marcus made out the latent killing intent oozing out of the detective prompting him to realize that this was his cue to leave.
However, just then, a series of hurried footsteps were heard before the cell door was struck repeatedly.
"Sir, you might want to come out and see this."
"What is it?" The detective inquired in a hoarse tone.
"... It's the Martinez family head, he is currently tossing up a fuss in the precinct."
The detective's eyes shook as he glanced at Marcus to discover that the latter was smiling mischievously.
"You little…"
"Sir!"
"Damn it." Stomping his feet on the ground, the detective turned and quickly rushed to the door, opening it up to reveal two panicking officers at the other end.
Scowling at them, he went past them before rushing up to the precinct.
Meanwhile, the cops rushed to untie Marcus before escorting him upstairs.
