Chapter 1
Catalina’s Pov
“I have sent the package to you. It will arrive at your place soon. Congratulations once again. Love you,” I read the message once again and squeaked in excitement.
Just then, the doorbell sang. That must be it! I dashed to the door and flung it open.
A man in a dark suit stood on the porch, holding a sleek black folder.
"Miss..." he began, but I cut in quickly.
“Catalina. I am Miss Catalina,” he looked at me puzzled and thrown off for a moment before he handed me the file without a word.
“That is the car,” he gestured behind him, and I looked past him and gasped.
It was even more beautiful than the pictures I saw. It was sleek, shiny, and perfect. Just the way I wanted it.
“Oh my God,” I whispered, walking towards it like I was approaching royalty. “It is stunning,”
“I will take my leave now,” he bowed before walking away. I barely registered him before taking my phone out of my pocket, my hands trembling in excitement, and calling Tyler.
He picked up on the second ring.
“Hey babe,” My face heated up as I heard his smooth and sexy voice which still gave me butterflies.
“Hi. Are you ready for today?” I asked.
“I can't wait to see you in your gorgeous wedding dress.”
I held the phone to my ear a moment longer, my heart fluttering from Tyler’s words. “I love you,” I whispered, meaning every word.
“I love you too, Lina. See you at the aisle” he replied before hanging up.
See you when I become your wife.
I stood still for a moment, staring at the car. It wasn’t just a wedding gift, it was a symbol of our future. A future I had sacrificed for and believed in.
I looked at the engagement ring which sat on my finger. The ring on my finger sparkled under the light. In a few hours, I would be walking down the aisle to marry the man I had loved for four years.
But before that…
I should surprise him with the gift. I will go there and surprise him.
I hurried inside, grabbing the second surprise— the house papers. I tucked them into a gift box beside the car key. This was going to blow his mind. He had no idea I had bought us a home. A forever.
He had always worried about where we were going to live with our kids. This might just be it.
I might as well tell him the truth about me.
I bit my lip in excitement and decided to drop them off personally. Just a quick visit. He always liked surprises, didn’t he?
I grabbed my purse and headed for the hotel where Tyler was staying. The wedding was happening nearby, and since his house was far away, he decided to stay in a hotel.
I made sure everything was perfect. Today had to be perfect.
Just three more hours, Lina. Just three hours and you will be bearing Catalina Tyler Wright.
But fate had other plans.
I had a key card to his suite so it wasn't hard to get in. When I reached his room, I heard voices.
I smiled, thinking maybe his best man was hyping him up or calming his nerves.
I walked closer to the door and the door was left ajar. I was about to open the door when I heard my sister’s laugh.
Danielle?
I froze outside the door.
“God, she is so stupid,” Tyler’s voice cut through the air. “All these years, she never suspected a thing.”
“Yeah,” Danielle said, her voice laced with mockery. "She thinks you are marrying her for love. Pathetic.”
My heart stopped.
“Once I get control of her dad’s company, I am done pretending,” he continued. “I can’t even stand to touch her anymore.”
Blood drained from my face. My ears rang. My legs wouldn’t move. And my handle trembled, almost making the box I was holding fall.
“You are unbelievable,” Danielle giggled. “Using her like that. I almost feel bad.”
“You didn’t feel bad last night,” he murmured, and then I heard a sound I will never forget.
A moan.
My hand clutched the box tighter, the keys rattling inside. My lungs burned, but I couldn’t breathe. My own sister. The man I was about to marry.
They were too busy and carried away to hear my movements and I left the room. Tears fell from my eyes as I left his suite.
I wanted to barge in and demand answers. I wanted to slap them both for making me look like a fool, but I couldn't.
Could I throw away four years of my life? Four years that I have used to love this man?
Was it the company he wanted? I will give it to him if it is to make him happy.
I will give him everything I have if it is to make him happy and loyal to me.
I cleaned my tears as determination filled my heart. I will walk down that aisle and marry the man I have loved with all my life for four years.
I will make him change and become loyal. I know I can.
I turned away, trembling, humiliated, shattered— And I still walked down that aisle.
I saw my sister smile vibrantly beside me as my maid of honor and to-be husband smiled at me as I stood in front of him.
Maybe— just maybe— he would change his mind when he saw how much I truly loved him.
Instead, Tyler took the mic just when the priest asked to exchange vows, glanced at me in my wedding dress, and smiled the coldest smile I have ever seen.
“I can’t do this,” he said, his voice ringing loud and clear before a hundred gasps filled the air. “I am calling off the wedding.”
And just like that. My whole world fell apart.
