Chapter 12 Business Talent
Sure enough, there was a problem.
The error was not obvious, but it was very serious.
If Dan had not discovered it, and the document had really been issued... He couldn't help but shudder, the consequences were disastrous.
"Secretary Kendrick will be fined this month's bonus, and Assistant Panter will go to the Human Resources Department to receive a reward of 1000 dollars." Mr. Brandon clearly distinguished between rewards and punishments.
All that Dan had wanted was to help Secretary Cao avoid a dire consequences, but he became jealous of him.
He started to rally the people in the office to isolate Dan, but Dan did not care at all . It just so happened that he did not want to associate with these people. He believed in simple mantra of cows and sheep traveling in groups, while tigers traveled alone.
But soon, Mr. Brandon could not stand it anymore. He had had enough of the office gossip unhealthy competition.
He asked Dan to book a restaurant and treat customers to a meal in a team building event.
Dan booked a restaurant at the largest and most high-end seafood facility in Boston where a meal would easily cost hundreds of thousands.
Guaranteed that the Brandon family was rich, but this was not the way to spend money. Mr. Brandon had started from scratch and still adhered to the hard-working and frugal style of his youth. He had also never treated such a lavish guest in his life. When he saw the bill, he almost vomitted his heart.
It was unbecoming of him to lose temper at the work, and so after work, he called Dan and his daughter home and scolded him harshly
"Look at what you did? How would you imagine of spending so much just on a meal?" He started, breathing fire. "Even if the Brandon family has a mountain of gold, it clearly won't afford your squandering!"
As if the scolding was not humiliating enough, Mr. Brandon went and to advise his daughter to severe links with Dan.
"Break up with him, break up now. Such a man can't give you happiness. If you follow him, he will lose you sooner or later."
"What's the matter? I'm sure you must have some explanation for all this," Roslyn looked at her husband with trust in her eyes. She believed that her husband must have his reasons for doing this.
Dan had always never bothered to explain anything he had done to others, but seeing his wife's eyes, he could not help but soften his heart. Unmoved, he addressed his incensed father in-law.
"Mr. Smith, whom you invited today, has eight companies eyeing him and they all want to make this deal. Mr. Smith doesn't have time to examine the company's strength in detail. Treating him amicably with no reservations is the most basic way to show strength. How can you let them hand over the project to us with confidence if you can't even afford to host an event in classy outfit?"
"Nonsense! You think you can win Mr. Smith over with just a meal? You think too simply..." He felt insulted.
"No apologies, but what if I can reach a cooperation with Mr. Smith?" Dan interrupted.
"If you can do that, I will apologize to you and never do it again," he retorted with loud cynicism in his voice.
"Okay, is it a deal?"
"It's a deal."
* * * * *
It was almost noon the following day and Dan had not reported to work yet.
Secretary Kendrick took the opportunity to sow discord. He approached Mr. Brandon.
"General Manager, I have a bad feeling that Mr. Panter might have run away. He has caused such a big loss to the company, we can't let him get away with it. I'll let the company's legal department send him a lawyer's letter..."
"Do your own thing, he doesn't need you to worry about him." Mr. Brandon scolded the secretary and asked him to go out.
Dan was his son-in-law, whatever were his mistakes, it was not okay for others to slander him in front of him.
Secretary Kendrick seemed to have been chastised and humbly admitted his mistakes, but he was very much unconvinced in his heart.
A few minutes before lunch break, Dan finally came in.
It was not like Secretary Kendrick to give up any opportunity to ridicule Dan. When he saw him coming, he immediately came over and started shouting.
"Hey, isn't this our assistant Panter? I know you are an assistant, but I don't how and why you think you are the boss. Even the boss doesn't have such big airs as you."
"Get out of the way, a good dog doesn't block the road," Dan hit back coldly.
Dan stood in front of him, his aura so strong that Secretary Kendrick felt an invisible pressure directed at him, making him unable to open his mouth even if he wanted to argue.
"We will see about that. The general manager is waiting for you in the office," he found his voice after what appeared to have been a humbling encounter.
He stepped aside.
Dan walked into Mr. Brandon's office and slapped the contract on his desk before the latter would get angry.
"It's signed, please take a look," he reported, indicating the contract.
"Are you kidding me?" Mr. Brandon could not hide hie disbelief.
But when he picked up the contract and took a look, he immediately showed joy on his face. It was incredibly beyond kidding.
In addition, Dan had also gained two more points for the company on the original basis. Two points meant more than 10 million in profit. In the face of such a large profit, that little catering fee just a drop in the ocean.
So happy was Mr. Brandon that he was unable to close his mouth for a moment.
"Okay, very good, you go to the Human Resources Department to collect your bonus."
No sooner had Dan gone out than Me. Brandon called his daughter, praising his son-in-law for his ability and being better than Kevin.
"Dad, you won't oppose us this time, right?" Roslyn queried her father.
"Well, this is just the beginning. I have to continue to test him. If he is really capable, I will definitely make him my son-in-law."
Mr. Brandon had been able to start from scratch and create his current family business, not just by hard work, but also by knowing how to use people well.
From these two principles, he now realized that it was a waste of talent to let Dan do some routine work, so he transferred him to the sales department and where he started as an ordinary salesperson.
In the sales position, it was easy to get promoted and make more money, but one got what they worked for, and there was no performance without hard work.
Mr. Brandon wanted to test his potential limit.
As was his norm, Dan used the word "slacking" to the fullest.
He drove Roslyn to work every day, and then went to the company, sat at his workstation and played games, or fiddled with something on the computer. People who passed by him always saw the game interface.
As if to add insult to injury, Dan also began to be late, leaving early, asking for leave, and even absenting himself from work frequently.
Half a month later, his performance was surprisingly rated zero.
The performance was zero, which was even more eye-catching than the sales champion. Dan became the most conspicuous person in the sales department!
Analysts made comparisons and drew conclusions. Dan did not work hard, which led to a drop in morale in the sales department. Consequently, he overall sales in the first half of the month dropped sharply.
The sales manager was so angry that he wanted to fire him, but because Dab was personally arranged by the boss, he had to go through the boss before he could fire him.
Mr. Brandon called Dan to his office and scolded him.
"Don't be so proud of your achievements. If you want to work in the company, work hard. If you don't want to work, get out of here. Don't let your bad apple spoil my business."
With these cajoling, biting remarks, Dan's expression remained unaffected. He took his time before spelling out his findings.
"You finally admit that there is a problem with the company's management?" He posed.
"What nonsense are you talking about? I'm talking about you now. Why are you talking about the company's management? The problem is you, not the company."
"I have no problem."
"You have been in the sales department for half a month, and you have no performance at all. You still have the nerve to say it is someone else's problem?"
Mr. Brandon was visibly furious and he warned Dan to resign if he did not open an order soon.
It was the guiding principle for every employee in the sales department achieve sales of one million dollars and develop at least one new customer every month. If one failed to achieve one of these goals, there was to be no bonus, and if both were not achieved, only the basic salary could be obtained.
If the target was not met for three consecutive months, the employee would be fired!
Dan knew that his fate was hanging on a very thin thread, but none knew what was up his sleeve.
