CHAPTER SIXTY

806 Words
He should not be excited because new kids meant someone was leaving soon and worse, the new kid would be gone in months but he could not deny that he enjoyed the bonding. Some were little demons but more often than not, they were angels and they took his mind off his own troubles as he worried about them. He would sometimes think of his parents too and wonder how his sibling was doing or siblings but the chance of his mother birthing a twin was slim. However, recently he found himself thinking about them more often than not. Considering the time frame there was a chance that his sibling would be sent here soon enough. The youngest child they got was around two years or about to clock two years. He was also worried about the off chance that his sibling had come and gone and he didn't even realize it. As he sped walk to the area a lot of thoughts ran through his mind. One of them being, that all that he thought were speculation and his sibling had been born without. Of course, he would have picked this over any other option but he could not help but think of the off chance that they had powers, they would get sent here and then taken away. He didn't want to think about it, didn't want to think about his helplessness. It didn't help that his magic was not getting any better. He stopped abruptly just before he could hit any child and almost immediately, Vernon appeared behind him panting. "Next time, warn me before you take off like that, okay?" Dev muttered. "I hear you," but Vernon was not listening. He was looking out for the new kid and he spotted her almost immediately. "Madame Rebecca said she arrived yesterday and cried non-stop. She won't eat and won't stop crying except when she goes to sleep but as soon as he wakes up she will resume crying. I figured you would want to see her." Dev continued, explaining the details to Vernon. "Thanks." Dev knew about his worry and it took a while for him to mention it to him but since then he had wasted no time to inform Vernon when a new kid arrived. "Totally my pleasure." From where Vernon stood, he had a clear view of her but just her back. Her hair was full, black and it was tied up in a bun. She seemed so small as she sat with her back shaking, it was pretty obvious she was crying if the sounds emanating were not enough. At the sight of them, the crew was already up on their feet, screaming their excitement. "Vernon, Dev." They cried. Some got Vernon's name right but most didn't. However, Vernon didn't mind, he was used to it. He said his hi's absentmindedly because his attention was divided. He kept his eyes glued to her back, she didn't move even with all the distracting noise and kept crying. After saying all the hi's and all, he carefully made his way to where she was appearing in her line of sight. She looked up, noticing that someone was there but she didn't stop crying and Vernon would have sworn her crying intensified. She was pretty in a baby-like way. She had puffy cheeks and her eyes were red, it was easy to figure out she had been crying for a while. He thought her features looked familiar but that was expected, a lot of the children tended to look alike. He dropped to his knees and stretched out his hand, hoping she would let him carry her, but she didn't. Instead, she slowly turned around facing her side to him and that was when he saw it. A gasp escaped from his lips and he felt water at the corner of his eyes. He didn't ask for her permission but rather picked her into his arms and gave her a tight hug. Well, her sobs turned to hellish screams. "Vernon, what are you doing?" Dev ran towards him and tried to rescue her. "I am so sorry," he muttered at her crying and dropped her like she was hot. He was so worried that he did not even realize she was no longer crying but rather she was looking at him oddly. "Vernon, are you okay?" Dev asked. "What was that all about? Almost thought you were strangling her there." He chuckled. "That is my sister." He said with a straight face, glancing towards Dev and back to her. Almost immediately, the smile was completely wiped from Dev's face showing a surprised look. "You are joking, right?" "Come on Dev, why would I joke about something like that?" Vernon asked, looking at Dev square in the face. "I promise that's my sister."
