CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE

1015 Words
Dev did not say anything at first because Vernon's idea sounded reasonable. The only problem was Dev did not want him going back to sleep because trying to get him up would be worse than not letting him sleep. "Okay, how about this? You hang out with us for an hour and then you can sleep the rest of the day away. I promise I would not so much as make a sound let alone deliberately interrupt your sleep." Vernon was not very appreciative of the idea but he could tell he was fighting a losing battle. This looked like he had a chance but he knew there was no way he would go for just an hour. He would end up spending his entire time there. "You know this would not work." He protested but he had already given up and at this point, he knew he would give in to Dev and follow him. Dev sneered like a horse, as if Vernon did not already know he was enjoying himself he had to make it super obvious. Vernon rolled his eyes and putting on some shoes, he started to walk out the door. If you can't beat them, join them. He didn't think there was a better phrase to explain this situation and truthfully, he rather be sleeping. They would not mind if he missed one day after he did miss days all time. Today would not be the first time. However, Dev to the rescue, always ruining plans. "So, you're seriously not going to talk to me?" Dev muttered. "Did you say anything and I did not answer?" Vernon asked. He was not pissed but he knew he needed the sleep and he could tell that he would be cranky because of lack of it. "What are you talking about? I have been speaking to you since we left the room. You have not replied." Dev complained. "First off, speak louder, and secondly, I did not hear you." Vernon did not so much as a glance in his direction, just kept walking. "Are you not going to ask what I said?" Dev obviously was not letting it go. Vernon left eye ticced. He was very close to breaking off a branch and wiping Dev with it. "I am not interested." He replied without flinching. "Attitudes like this won't get you anywhere, Vernon. That's why I am the only one who can bear you a little." Vernon did not care for friends and even though Dev was merely teasing there was truth in what he said. Nevil was the only other person who went out of his way to talk to him or force him to do things. The rest always ignored which he preferred or they would say nasty things to his hearing. Half the time he pretended he was deaf. It didn't help that he was the lowest ranked now. The only lowest rank, mind you. A new system came out and they were all ranked from one to five. With one being the highest and five being the lowest. One could guess where he had landed. Dev, Nevil, Jay, and a couple of others were level three while the rest except him were in level four. He was the only one with an insignia that said level five. Must be nice, he would occasionally think, for them to have someone they could look down on. "Kicking me while I am down, Dev. Wouldn't you call that a chicken move?" Vernon returned. He could think clearer now. The walk was slowly wiping away the sleep from his eyes. "I was not kicking… Fine, sorry. So, what has Evil made you do for the past three days?" Dev insisted. His new teacher's name was actually Steven but one day in a fit of anger he had called him Evil and since then Dev had never let it go. "We both know you're not interested, you're just trying to get me to forget my anger. Not going to happen, I will get my revenge on you for this even if it is the last thing I do." In the last sentence, he locked eyes with Dev. Dev faked a shiver, "You can be scary when you want to be." "Shut up!" He was getting slightly annoyed, even though he preferred Dev's company to anyone else, it still did not make him less annoying. "You know if you don't tell me, I won't let it go." Vernon rolled his eyes and internally cringed, since when had the trip to the children's section ever been this long. He would swear he had been walking for hours. "If you really cared, you would have let me sleep in, not drag me out of bed even though you could tell how sleepy I was all because you did not want to go alone." "You know that's not true, I have gone alone several times." "Yeah right." Vernon sighed loudly as the section finally came into view. He would have happily hugged every child for putting an end to the evil conversation with Dev. It was not like he didn't want to tell him but he could not help but enjoy seeing Dev be all antsy at the fact that something was being kept from him. Almost as soon as he was within sight range a crying voice hit him. It wasn't loud but it was fierce and he could tell it was constant. "Why didn't you tell me there was a new kid?" He asked and increased his pace. "Because you were not listening to me," Dev did not even get a chance to finish his sentence and could only try to keep up with Vernon because this time, however, he really was not listening. No sooner were the words out of his mouth that he sped up trying to reach the children to see who the new kid was but from the sound of their voice, he could guess it was a girl. Nah he could not guess after all almost all children sounded alike.
