CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

1027 Words
Vernon woke up suddenly, he was in the habit of waking up like this recently and even he knew it wasn't a good way to wake up. He rubbed his eyes as he tried to wipe the sleep away. It was still dark out but he could tell it was almost morning and if tried to sleep again he would have to wake up in a couple of minutes. He didn't want to do that, it suddenly seemed like a hassle to wake up again. He yawned, it was a huge one. He closed his eyes as his mouth let out a big one. It was so big that the sides of his lips hurt after. He rubbed his eyes and got out of bed. He felt relatively better than he had before he fell asleep. He could tell that he was either back to normal or he was very close. The headache, the fatigue, and the nausea were completely gone. The only thing that remained was he still felt like he had not slept enough which was funny because that was all he spent the entirety of the day before doing. After he had closed the door on Bess, he had fallen into a long nap and had not woken up until it was time for the first dinner. Even the noises of the boys after training was over didn't faze. The only thing that had managed to wake him up was the loud bell. He had groggily gotten out of bed and then made his way to the cafeteria. He had felt like he was being eaten from the inside out. He was so hungry that he had asked for seconds. Florence did not hide her surprise when he slowly approached the counter again with his empty plate. However, she didn't say anything but carefully dished out more food for him. He muttered his thanks and fled. He knew everybody at the cafeteria had been staring at him as soon as he stepped in the cafeteria and now he had tripled the stare but asking for seconds, nobody asked for seconds at least not during the period he had been here because aside from their meals, there were also more than enough fruits on each table. He had always wondered why there was a surplus of fruits but he figured even if they rang out, the nature mages could make more enough, he had seen a first-hand display of that. Nevil loved to flaunt his skills. Now that he thought about it, he wondered why Nevil never asked him what he could do or thought it weird that he never did any magic. Who would have thought they both had the same type? He wasn't pleased with the development and as he walked out of the bathroom he thought about how inconvenient it was. After dinner, he had quickly made his way back to the room but he couldn't fall asleep this time but he pretended he did because the questions had not stopped. He had not moved until it was time for the second dinner, after that he had no problem sleeping and didn't wake up throughout the night. He slowly made his way back to his bed and noticed the dawn light seeping into the room. The bell, however, wasn't as loud as usual when it finally rang; he wasn't sure if it was because he had been waiting for it. The response of everybody was automatic and as usual, as if he had been standing directly outside the door waiting for the exact moment when the bell would ring. Sir Phillip would then proceed to burst through the doors as loudly as possible. Sir Phillip was the only male other than Vivk that was ever seen in the residence halls and his business was usually the boys' room. Vernon was one of the first people out of the room and quickly made his way to the cafeteria. He got served first and Florence put a little too much on his plate and he figured it was so he wouldn't ask for extra. It ended up being too much for him to eat and he spent extra minutes trying to stuff himself as he didn't want to waste any of the food. Finally, the bell rang again and it was time to leave the cafeteria but Vernon wasn't in a hurry to leave as usual and took his time as he made his way out. He knew exactly where he was headed, Captain Robbin. He wondered what she would say to him about the fact that he had discovered his powers. Vivk had not said anything about it and frankly, it was a bit disappointing to not get a proper reaction but thankfully his roommates have been quite explicit. Aside from the fact that it had been all they spoke about, Devant had not hidden his excitement and had spent a large amount of time congratulating Vernon, it had been a bit overwhelming but Vernon didn't mind. As he walked on the gravel, he hoped Captain Robbin would have a similar reaction even if it won't be the same. He watched from the corner of his eyes, students from the nature magic group that was now his group make their way to their corner of the courtyard. It felt good to know he would join them soon and it wasn't a temporary situation. He smiled to himself as he approached Captain Robbin's shade. Bart was by her side, as usual, he stood so stiffly that even from the distance that Vernon was he cringed as he stared. "Vernon!" Her voice thundered as soon as he was within hearing range. A large grin appeared and Vernon found himself increasing his pace. She was obviously beckoning on him to reach her faster and for lots of reasons, he didn't want to disappoint. He was by her side in seconds, "Captain Robbin," he said, nodding his greetings. All of a sudden every expression on her face disappeared and it immediately changed to a scowl. Vernon felt himself flinch as he wondered what this was all about.
