The cars started moving, Dr Carson’s first and then Mr McGregor’s, with only one headlight because the other one had smashed.
Tom sat next to Dr Carson, and worried about Mother. Maybe the crocodiles had also come to the farmhouse. Maybe Mother had fled, and maybe they had attacked her.
The book had predicted the crocodiles. Maybe he should show it to someone.
The McGregor house was closer to the river than Tom’s house. The road between the two houses curved around a gully that was normally dry, but had turned into a creek. Already, you could see the river like a silver ribbon between the trees in the distance. Once the water cleared the levee, it would be here very quickly. This had happened once when Tom was little.
