Tom scooped up Thing and got into the car, while Dr Carson put his bike in the back.
Dr Carson had left the engine running and the windscreen wipers on, but they almost couldn’t keep up with the rain.
Thing had calmed down, but still rumbled occasionally.
Dr Carson came back inside, his hair dripping into his face and his shirt sticking to his shoulders.
While they drove through town, Dr Carson asked questions about Mother. Had she been like that all night? Had she threatened anyone?
Tom couldn’t answer most of the questions, because he had been asleep while she had been in the kitchen getting the gun and all that. Did this mean that Mother would go as crazy as Mrs McGregor?
