Chapter 6Hell, if I had half a brain, I would have started here to begin with. Could have saved a bunch of time and miles on the road. And you would have missed that time with Nate, too, his inner beast reminded. Okay. I’ll give you that one. Donner ceased scolding himself as he walked across the dormant grass toward the modest white house. Nothing out of the ordinary. Frankly, ‘plain’ described the dwelling best. Yet, that fit their childhood completely—modest. There wasn’t money for fancy items or big world tours. Instead, they hung out with Mother Nature and used their imaginations for further adventures. Summers were spent in the country where the whole family would gather for a couple of weeks. With everyone spread all over the world, it was a time of reunion and reconnection. At
