DIVORCE
At the Riverton Court;
“Ethan, you can't do this to me.” The voice of woman was heard.
“Oh yes, Marie, I can. And I will.” Ethan responded with sacarsim. “I warned you not to lay a finger on Victoria Ashford, but you wouldn't listen. Now I'll divorce you.”
“Ethan, you must be crazy. How could you divorce your wife for a mistress.”
This quarrel had been going on for a while now. Maire Beckman had only thought it was just a stage in her marriage. Never did she think that she'd get divorced in this way. Ever since Victoria Ashford came into their lives, things had changed drastically in her marriage. Victoria came in as a friend but had secretly had an affair with Ethan.
What a shame, Marie thought.
“Ethan, that woman deceived you. You lost money because of her.”
“No I lost money because of you.”
Ethan was to invest in a project and Marie had constantly warned him against it. The failed deal had been a high-stakes tech acquisition—one Ethan had been eager to dive into. Marie had spent days analyzing the risks. Every sign pointed to disaster. But Victoria had dismissed all of it, calling Marie paranoid and insecure, and urged Ethan to invest.
And he did.
Two weeks later, the startup went bankrupt—its founders vanished overnight with investor funds. The media was calling it one of the worst investment blunders of the year.
Marie had warned him. Repeatedly. But instead of acknowledging his mistake, he blamed her for “jinxing” it.
“Listen, you will apologize to Victoria and pack your things out of this house. Victoria is the daughter of the Ashford family if you hurt her, you'll answer to them. I won't take any responsibility for you.”
“So that's what this is all about. Ethan. You selfish monster. After everything I did for you.”
“It's all in the past.” Ethan slapped her across her face.”Besides I'm still not where I want to be. Now I have Victoria, I'll scale even higher. Marie, you should do what's best for me by signing the papers. Don't stand in the way of my progress.” Ethan shouted already losing his patience.
Just then, his phone rang. Marie watched as his voice softened to answer the call. She sat there, tears streaming down her face. Ethan hung up and turned to her.
“Marie there's no need to cry. I'll give you money, you won't live a poor life for at least the first year of our divorce. You just need to know how to spend money wisely.”
Wow, she thought, this lowly bastard, telling her to learn how to spend money wisely. He was the one who lost money not her. She had always made good profits with all of her investments. Even now, the 5 billion dollar project she invested in has already started making profits over 10billion in the space of a month. And the project is still on going, meaning more profits are coming.
“I'm going to pick up Victoria from the hospital, you pack your things, “She doesn’t need the stress of seeing you here. Pack your things before I return.”
“Ethan no, you can't trust her she's not good at investment.” She rushed to hold Ethan to prevent him from leaving. “She'll ruin you”
“Don't slander her like that.” He pushed her away. Marie fell and hit her back against the table. Pains shot through her spine.
“Ethan… if you do this, aren't you scared my family would come for you.”
He chuckled darkly “Don't be too full of yourself, You're just a lowly member of the Beckman family. Nobody's going to pay attention to you. In the three years we were married not even one person came looking for you for any reason.” Ethan snapped and turned to walk away.
She looked up at him, her face bruised but her gaze defiant. “I tried, Ethan. I gave everything to this marriage. But it seems I loved a man who was never worth it. Fine. I’ll sign the damn papers. But one day, you’ll regret losing me.”
Ethan suddenly felt sorry for her. He quickly shrugged the feeling off. I've been nice to her in the past. A little bad won't hurt much. He said to himself.
“Remember to pack your things fast.” He said “and stop your false threat.”He said finally before leaving.
Marie sat still for a moment, letting the silence settle around her. Then slowly, she picked herself up, wiped her tears, and walked to her phone. She sent a text to someone before going inside. She packed her few bags, leaving everything Ethan had bought for her behind.
She caught sight of their wedding picture on the wall. She picked it up and smashed it before stepping outside.
As she stepped outside, a sleek pink sports car screeched to a halt. The door flung open.
“Marie, get in!” Lily beamed from the driver’s seat.
Marie blinked. “What a show off.”
Lily gasped dramatically. “Excuse me? This is a limited edition sports car! The only one of its kind in Seravelle. You’re not impressed?”
Marie cracked a smile. “I’m impressed. You win.”
Lily’s face softened as she got a good look at her cousin. “Oh Marie… you look like you’ve been through war. That jerk Ethan deserves a good beating, oh no he deserves more.”
“Lets just not bring up his name anymore.” Marie muttered climbing in.” “ I'm done Lily, let's go to your place.”
“Nonsense, everyone's waiting for you at Lowen Manor. Uncle called everyone the moment I told him about your divorce.”
“What? Dad's waiting for me? What of grandpa?” Marie asked shocked.
“Didn't you hear me say everyone, or should I spell it out for you.”
Marie’s heart skipped. She had imagined her return over and over—always expecting anger, cold shoulders, disappointment. After all, she’d defied her father’s wishes and married Ethan against everyone’s warnings. Who would have thought they'd be so happy to see her
“Relax Marie, no one's angry with you.”Lily assured her.
She relaxed a bit and smiled, feeling excited to go home.
