Chapter One
“Smith, what the hell were you thinking? I'm very disappointed in you!” the overall head of the agency, Chief, shook his head sitting behind his desk. His hand massaged his aged temples as he reprimanded a staff. “Sir, it's that bastard's fault. He got on my nerves” Kayla said trying to defend herself. “ He made offensive s****l remarks about the Miss and I..” " And you beat him up? No that's an understatement, you straight up destroyed half of his future generation if not all!” the boss hollered. " He is the son of Mr Shan one of the most reputable businessmen in the city. His reputation rivals even the Mayor. Now there's a report filed against you saying you destroyed his nuts for flirting with your young Miss, out of jealousy he included” “What?" Kayla abruptly got up in shock. “Grr.. that motherfuc..". a glare from her boss shut her up. She ran her hands through her hair then tucked both hands in the pockets of her black combat trousers. “And what about the Miss? What's the saying on their end?” Looking up to meet her gaze, he replied “Nothing except to remove you from protecting the Miss meaning..” " I'm fired.” She scoffed. " Way to go for standing up for her" “Well..” Chief trailed off “Yes and no” “What does that mean" Kayla muttered with scrunched eyebrows confused. “You've been relieved of your duties as the Miss's protective officer but you're still our agent” Seeing her quizzical gaze he continued. “I know the powers at play here are quite.. powerful but this agency is not to be underestimated. This of course doesn't mean you're off the hook. He left his seat striding towards the window before continuing. “Apart from offending that brat and his family, you also got the Miss’s family involved and they don't look like it one bit especially her father and you should have an idea of how he is.” " The mayor is scared of a businessman? Kayla asked rather mockingly. “Kayla" “Rogue" she corrected “Rogue.." he muttered in a low tone facing her this time with a hand in his pockets and the other one tapping the table. “I should have known you were trouble. It's pretty obvious with the name you chose for yourself.” Kayla smiled at his words. “Two years Smith. Two.Years!” Chief emphasized each word glaring at her. “In these two years, you've been with this agency, you've been fired by your clients four times and if you add this it will be the fifth. Well, it was rather easy to ignore as they were not much of a big fish but this is different.” " You beat up guys as a habit both on and off duty. Ride your motorbike on the highway like a robber on the run and you dress like you're in the mafia. What a nice name indeed. You really are a rogue.” Chief heaved realizing he said all that without breathing. “It's been a wonderful two years " Kayla sighed much to the annoyance of Chief. " Nice. Very nice!" He threw a file on the table for her which she reached for without asking any questions. “There's a red stain on my credentials," she said with a frown. " Four months suspension? Chief c'mon this is too much don't you think?” " We've covered for you all this while, not anymore... Rogue” he stressed out the last word. “Although we're not afraid of the Sky group nor the municipal office, you have to undergo some punishment unless you don't need this job anymore.” “You are keeping me on the bench. What am I supposed to do in those four months- nothing?” argued Kayla " You should have thought about that when you kicked a guy in the groin” Chief chuckled " Besides, think of it as a vacation, like a big baggage being loaded off you and of course off me–you are a headache. “Now you have time to rest, meditate, and reflect on your actions” he continued " Pfft.. sounds like detention or some religious retreat. Nice one Chief” “You might be one of the best security guards we've trained and employed but that doesn't mean we should be partial when it comes to matters like this, especially as you're always involved in matters like this.” Kayla shook her head. In her opinion, this boss of hers was too yellow-bellied and an asshole. Not afraid he says but he's probably following their instructions. The previous Chief was much better and to her deserved her respect. He was the very reason she joined the agency and pretty much trained her in his style, they were similar in character, unafraid, indifferent, and very unconventional though getting the best results in the end. His death was sudden and unexpected, in the line of duty. Oh, how the whole agency mourned that week. He was a hero to most, even beyond the doors of the building. This man, however, standing across from her has contributed almost nothing and has always targeted her. Now her backup is gone, he's taking bigger steps. ‘ You've underestimated me if you think I'll do what you want’ Kayla said in her thoughts. “Why are you smiling?" “It's a smirk dumbass" she replied much to the surprise of the Chief. “Let's get something straight." she sat putting a leg across the other and interlocking both hands with the demeanor of a Mafia boss. “One, I am the best guard this agency has ever had whether you admit it or not. Two, you're really stupid to think I'm at your mercy or you can control me because I work here. Mr Hans and I had an agreement, with him gone, I'm just here because I feel like it even though I get sick of seeing you every week.” " Third?” asked Chief who seemed to be boiling in anger with smoke threatening to escape his ears. She got up adjusting her leather jacket which was a nice combination with the combat trousers and white colored sneakers. She patted the non-existent dust on it to give a swagger effect. “I quit motherfucker" her tone cold this time. She then threw the papers on the Chief's dumbfounded face. She took a look at her watch, which was not too expensive but a nice one. “Oh, I'm almost late for my flight. See you never motherfucker” She stepped out of the office with a bounce in her steps like she had been awaiting this moment not forgetting to show a middle finger to the Chief before disappearing from sight. “Why do I feel like something is not right?" Chief muttered after a few minutes of speechlessness. ————————— Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard flight UA78 with service from California to New York. We are currently third in line for take-off and are expected to be in the air in approximately eleven minutes. “The Captain's voice echoed in the first class wing” Yes, after the banter at the agency, this was the next stop for Kayla. She wasn't stupid to think the Sky group would let her off after Nutcracking their young master and had booked a flight even before talking to Chief. Her destination—home. She sat down, fastened her seatbelt, and leaned back with her eyes closed in meditation. The Captain's announcement went on with a few minutes interval before take off. Minutes later another one came. Hello, this is your Captain speaking. Welcome aboard. We are presently flying at thirty-five thousand feet on our flight from California to New York. We are expecting a smooth flight, courtesy of the weather and anticipate on-time arrival in New York at 12:15 GMT. So for now, sit back, relax, and enjoy your flight. The cabin crew will be with you shortly. She sighed and her eyes opened to gaze at the window, enjoying the view and feeling of being above the building, trees, and people. “I envy the birds at times like this" she mused. " Excuse me, miss. Would you prefer some fries with ketchup and salad or an egg and ham breakfast? A soft lady's voice interrupted her musing state making her turn to rest her gaze on a beautiful air hostess holding on to a trolley. “I will take the egg and ham platter,” she said smiling brightly at the food. She didn't have breakfast as she had to hop on the plane early this morning. “You can add a can of coke and some grapes,” she added before the hostess could say anything else. Chuckling slightly, the flight attendant set up everything within a minute. Seeing Kayla was satisfied, she rolled the trolley away. Kayla however had begun munching on the food.
