Cynthia sat quitely in the cab, tears rushing down her eyes as she was lost in her thoughts. That cab driver glance at her through the view mirror. He could see the tears in her eyes, he wanted to speak to her but wasn't sure.
"Are you alright, Miss," the driver ask her.
Cynthia quickly wipe her tears and look at the man from the view mirror, "Nothing."
The driver kept driving until he reach the address Cynthia gave him. Cynthia was lost in her until when the cab halt, bringing her back to her reality.
Cynthia heard loud noise from inside her apartment. She walked slowly towards the apartment and recognize the voice, it was the landlord. The rent has been overdue for over five months now.
“Get out!” The landlord yelled and threw a bag out of their house.
Cynthia saw this from outside the house and immediately, she rushed into the house. Running up the stairs, she gotinto the house and saw that most of the furniture was missing.
“Mr. Randy please doesn’t kick us out. I am working very hard to raise the money.” She told the raging man whowas pushing her step mother’s bag with his foot.
Her father wasn't helping the matter, he was drunk, always drunk. He does no work to support the family, and most times, the little Cynthia makes from her part-time job, he forcefully collect it and spend on himself and the step mother.
That sight stung Cynthia's heart, but she remained silent.
“That’s what you said two weeks ago.” He yelled while moving into Caleb’s room.
Cynthia followed him there. Caleb was busy stuffing his clothes into a bag with trembling hands.
“Mr. Randy, please give me, one more week and this time, I promise I’ll get it for you.”
“No Cynthia! Not another chance. You people have deceived me over and over again for two months.” He told her.
“We are trying our best.” she said.
“Then your best is not enough.” he replied.
“Okay, tomorrow. Give us until tomorrow to move out, but if you kick us out this early morning where do you expect us to go?” Cynthia ask.
“I don’t care where you go. What I do care about is that, you people are not spending another night in hereand that’s final!” says the landlord as he furiously throws out their bags.
It was still early in the morning and the street was quite. Everyone in the neighborhood might probably heard the noise from their house. Theycould see how Mr. Randy is kicking them out, probably peeking through their windows to see the miserablefamily sitting outside the locked house with their bags.
“I need a drink.” , Mrs. mandy grumbled.
“You are thinking of drinking at a time like this?” Cynthia asked and the miserable mother replied.
“Yes, why can’t I?” Obviously she did not understand the situation they were in.
Cynthia was stunned,“We were just kicked out of our house. We have nowhere to go and all you can think of is drinking?"
Mrs. Mandy rose to her feet from her crouching position and countered. “who do you think you to talk to me this way..."
Cynthia also stood up on her feet, ready to challenge her step mother before he interrupted them.
"Can you two please stop it right now!" Mr. Forson yelled at them.
"You better speak sense into the head of your daughter," says Mrs. Mandy, walking away.
Cynthia was full of pains. The disappointment in her father wasn't enough, now, she lost her virginity to someone she never intended. And worst case, her best friend, Clara betray her.
Cynthia knew they needed help right now. They needed a place to stay and unfortunately, they had no money. She has not received this month’s payment yet. And payments usually came at the end of the month.Unfortunately, the end of the month was two weeks away.Oh, what to do? She thought desperately.
She knew she had to be the one to stand up and take control of this situation because her father won't figure out anything, let alone her step mother and brothercould not do anything to help the situation. They stopped taking responsibilities a long time ago.
At this desperate moment, she would do anything to keep her family safe. Yes, she has decided. Picking up herbag, she took out her phone and called her fiancée, Andrew.
“Hey, babe, can you please come over. I need some help," says Cynthia.
"I am sorry babe, but I am out of town right now." Says Andrew.
Cynthia dropped the call, feeling disappointed and down. She was about to give up when her phone rang again. This time it was from unknown ID.
"Hello, am I speaking with Miss. Cynthia?" The voice ask.
"Yes, who is this?" She ask with a curiosity voice.
"My name is Mathew, I need to speak to you about something important," he says. "Do you mind I come over to your house?'
Cynthia look at the apartment and sigh, "uhm... I...," Cynthia stammering as she speak, looking at her step mother and father.
"It's okay, don't be afraid, I just want to help you." The man says with soothing voice.
"Okay, no problem but I don't know you." Says Cynthia.
"This is your only chance if you want to get out of your misery right now. Make your choice now. However, I hope it will not be too late then.” He said as hang the call.
Cynthia stood there thinking to herself who could this be, why does he want to help her. Just as she was lost in her thoughts, the phone rang again.
“Hello?” There was loud music in the background, exploding in her ears.
“Have made your decision?” He ask.
“Yes, please I am ready.” She said and then the music reduced drastically. It was as if he turned it down.
“Good. So have you made up your mind?” The man ask again for confirmation.
“Yes.” Cynthia replied.
Few minutes latera black Mercedes Benz came along the street and stopped in front of their house. Cynthia stared at it with bulging eyes.Perhaps this was the man who had just call few minutes ago?
Caleb whistled and tap his mother who lying on the floor. “Wow, whose sleek ride is this?” he said, admiring the vehicle.
Cynthia’s phone suddenly buzzed and she quickly answered. “Hello, Mr. Mathew”
“Get inside, Miss. Cynthia, what are you waiting for?” He said. The loud music in the background was back again.
“The car?” She asked just to be sure they were talking about the same thing.
“Yes the black Mercedes. Do not worry. The chauffeur will take you straight to my place.” He hung up.
Cynthia rose to her full length and faced her step mother, brother and father. She swallowed hard and stared at them.Although they did not always get along, she was concerned about what they would say if she told them. Theywere her only family after all.
“Dad, Mrs. Mandy” She called and they tore their gazes from the sleek car and focused it on her. “I don’t know howto say this.”
“Just say it if the car is here to pick us up or not.” Caleb said.
“Yes, it’s here to take us.” She replied.
“Oh good. I was getting tired of sitting here.” Caleb replied.
He was about to pick his bags when Mrs. Mandy yelled, “You stay put.”
“Cynthia, where did you get a car?” Her step mother stared at her with the look ofsuspicion.
“Um... it belongs to a friend.” She replied and met her mother’s gaze full on. Even though she knew she was lying but she had to say it that way to avoid any suspicion.
“Since when did that happen?” She questioned further.
“Since today.” Cynthia replied
“And you met this guy where?” she asked again.
Cynthia was getting irritated by the questions now. She did not know where the sudden “responsible mother” attitude camefrom, but she was afraid of it.
“At my working place.” She lied again.
“Why so many questions, Darling?” her father ask.
Mrs. Mandy ignored his question and asked further. “Since when did you start having friends and I wasn’t aware of it? Whydidn’t I meet him? Why did you hide it from me? Oh, is it because he is not a young but an old man? Are youhaving an affair with a married man, Cynthia? Answer me dammit. Don’t shut up!”
Cynthia was enraged by her step mother’s accusations, “Since when did I have to report to you everything I do? As faras I know, I do not have to explain my life to anyone. I am old enough to make my own decisions and whether Ihave an old or young man as a friend is none of your business.”
“Cynthia, don’t make me beat you up right now.” Mrs Mandy warned and Caleb stepped in between them.
“No one is fighting here.” He said and pulled Cynthia aside. “Is he really your friend?” He asked and she nodded.
“Yes.” Cynthia replied her eyes furrow.
“But you never told us.” says Caleb.
“That’s because I don't wish for you people to know,” She replied and then walk away to pick up her bags.
Moving to his mother, he pulled her into a hug and crushed her face into his chest. “Mother calm down. Sydney
is only helping us. We need to go with her friend to his place and…”
“We are going nowhere!” Mrs. Mandy broke free of her son’s grasped and pointed a finger at Cynthia “Same thingapplies to you.”
Cynthia sighed, frustrated. Damn it! She was trying to help. She agreed to listen to a stranger she knew nothing about,to get them out of their miserable situation. However, her step mother was being unbearable.
“Mother stop this, and let’s go.” caleb says.
Cynthia took her bag and headed towards the car. A chauffeur stepped out andtook the bag from her.
“I am going nowhere with a slut!” Mrs. Mandy yelled and Cynthia felt like someone just drove a knife into her chest.
“Cynthia if you get into that car, forget that you have a father.” her father spoke finally.
Tears stung her eyes as she spun around. Caleb hold on to his mother, who was sitting on the floor. She glancedat them and hiss, looking away. It hurt her that her father isn't supporting her and was mute as Mrs. Mandy was casting her out, when all she did was, think aboutthem. She agreed to this because of them. She accepted to listen to a stranger because of them. Because she caredabout them. Because they were her only family and because she loved them very much.
Caleb drag his mother into the car. Cynthia board the car as her father also joined her. And they drove away.
