I got home just in time. I walked in through the front door tired, shutting it behind me. Something smelled really good. I sniffed the air. Mum cooked. “Mom,” I called out. She walked quickly down the stairs and pulled me right into her arms. “Woah, Mum,” I said, against her shoulder. “Why are you so excited?” She pulled back to look at me. “I, ugh, got a small job. Retail at a grocery store. It's not much. I mean, I told Trent about the situation; he said he was going to pull some strings for me. But we could work with this till I get something decent.” She was talking on and on. I giggled. “Mom, that's such good news. It's something.” “Yes.
