GUNS AND WAVES
The Inwave’s Venture was a masterpiece of modern naval engineering, a sleek, two-hundred-foot mega-yacht cutting through the pitch-black waters of the South China Sea.
To the rest of the world, it was the floating playground of Gabriel Vance, the meteoric billionaire tech prodigy whose logistics and e-commerce bussinesss had revolutionized globally in the name of trade.
But tonight, the yacht was a floating fortress.
Gabriel walked back and forth in his quiet bedroom, feeling stressed. He wore rolled-up sleeves and used a tablet to check his secure financial data. He was about to launch his new shipping software worldwide, a move that would control Asian trade and secure his business empire forever.
He poured a glass of scotch and heard the ice clink. Suddenly, before the ice could even melt in seconds, the room shook violently. A loud, muffled explosion echoed through the ship from deep inside the engine room.
"What's happening?" Gabriel muttered.
The lights inside the suit and to every room flickered, groaned, and died, plunging the room into absolute darkness before the emergency backup generators kicked in, flooding the corridors with an ominous, pulsing red glow. The yacht’s automated alarms began to scream, it's a high-pitched deafening wail that signaled catastrophic hull failure.
Gabriel dropped his glass. It shattered on the hardwood floor just as his satellite phone hissed with static.
"Sir! We are under attack!" his head of security, a seasoned former black-ops commander named Chen yelled through the line.
PEW! PEW!
A sharp gunfire shooting sound is rapid, and unmistakably rang out all over, even if from the outside of the ship.
"It’s a hit! A professional syndicate! They’re not here to kidnap you, Gabriel, they want the servers., they want the source code! They’ve overridden the bridge, we’re sinking, you need to... " The call cut into a sickening burst of static, followed by the wet thud of a body hitting the floor.
Gabriel didn't hesitate. He tore open his hidden wall safe, pulling out a sleek, matte-black semi-automatic pistol. The yacht groaned, listing a dangerous fifteen degrees to the port side. The water was coming in fast. He threw open the heavy oak door of his suite and stepped into the crimson-lit hallway. Smoke, thick and smelling of burning plastic and sulfur, billowed through the vents.
Ten paces away, two men clad in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles rounded the corner. No warning. No hesitation. They lifted their carbines in a single, fluid motion.
Gabriel dove to his right, his body hitting the polished marble floor. He rolled, pressing his spine hard against a structural pillar just as the corridor erupted into chaos. A barrage of rounds shredded the ornate wood paneling where he had stood a millisecond before. Jagged splinters and dust rained down on his hair, and he squinted through the debris.
Gritting his teeth, Gabriel didn't wait for them to advance. He timed the briefest break in their movement. Moving out from the cover of the marble, he acted with decisive precision. With two swift movements, the threats were incapacitated. The figures collapsed as the room fell silent, the encounter neutralized before they could regain to their consciousness.
"Clear," Gabriel muttered under his breath, his heart beating is faster now.
As he ran down the sharply tilting corridor, his boots were slipping on the slick floor, as his eyes locked onto the heavy steel doors leading to the upper deck.
The yacht was in its death throes.
Beneath his feet, a terrifying, low-frequency of vibration rattled the entire frame of the vessel, the violent shudder of millions of gallons of ocean water violently gutting the engine rooms and lower decks, dragging the massive multi-million-dollar ship relentlessly downward into the black abyss.
He slammed his weight against the heavy steel doors, breaching the threshold to the main deck, where the freezing sea gale hit him with the force of a physical blow. Rain tore down in relentless sheets, whipping violently across the slick metal and turning the pitch-black ocean into a chaotic, churning graveyard of white-capped waves. The yacht was rapidly going under by the stern, its massive bow tilting helplessly toward the night sky like a dying giant taking its final breath.
"Going somewhere, Mr. Vance?" a voice called out. A man in the dark suit shows up.
Gabriel spun around, wiping the rain from his eyes.
Standing near the helipad was a third infiltrator, the man's face obscured by a ballistic mask, his rifle leveled directly at Gabriel’s chest. Seems that he is leading the syndicate that had already anticipated every route to escape.
Gabriel reached for his sidearm, but a sharp impact sent him spinning around and slamming him hard against the stainless-steel deck railing. That unexpected shock was immediate. But his pistol slipped from his fingers and fell into the water below.
The man moved forward, his boots echoing against the slick metal surface, prepared to finish the task at hand. But then the yacht gave a sudden and forceful lurch as the engine block detached from its mount, causing the stern to quickly submerge beneath the water.
This abrupt shift in weight caused the mercenary to stumble backward, losing his footing on the wet deck. Gabriel's vision swam as he gazed into the dark, turbulent expanse of the ocean that lay endlessly beneath the ship's railing. He felt utterly defenseless, trapped within the confines of the vessel that resembled a metal coffin. Turning his attention back to the assassin, he noted that the man was already regaining his balance.
Choosing the terrifying uncertainty of the sea over the absolute certainty of his capture, Gabriel hurled his weight backward over the edge. He plummeted straight down into the freezing, merciless void. But mid-fall, his breath caught in his throat. Directly beneath him, a colossal, shadowy mass was rapidly rising from the pitch-black depths, breaking the churning surface and waiting to swallow him whole.
