Chapter1
The dim lights of the Unused York road flashed as Lila Stangard walked home, her steps overwhelmed with the weight of but another long day. The chill of the evening wind cut through her lean coat, but she had scarcely taken note of it. Her contemplations were somewhere else, misplaced in recollections that never appeared to blur. Each night was the same frequent update of the life she once had, and the life she presently battled to maintain. At fair eleven, a long time ancient, Lila’s world was smashed when her father stole away, vanishing without a follow. He cleared out behind nothing but a mountain of obligation and a spouse as well wiped out to battle the sickness that would before long take her life. In the flicker of an eye, Lila had gone from a carefree child to the sole supplier for her family. The weight of those for a long time squeezed down on her, indeed presently, a decade later. Twenty-one presently, Lila had long since buried the young lady she used to be. She had no time for dreams or fantasies. Each waking minute was expended in the frantic requirement to survive. The bills never halted heaping up, and the obligation collectors were persistent. She juggled numerous jobs as a waitress at a little coffee shop throughout the day, jotting scripts for a neighborhood theater late into the night, all while going to school in the trust of clawing her way to a superior future. But in spite of her best endeavors, the obscurity appeared to near in on her more firmly with each passing day. As she turned a recognizable corner on her domestic course, something caught her eye, a piece of paper rippling on an adjacent divider, somewhat clouded by the dim shine of the streetlights. Interest provoked, Lila ventured closer, pulling the note free from where it was quickly pinned. Personal Partner Needed. Tall Pay. Apply at Klein Industries. The words on the paper appeared nearly as well great to be genuine, and for a minute, Lila felt a glint of trust. Klein Businesses was a titan in the trade world, a title synonymous with riches and control. A work there might be her help, the chance she required to at last break free from the choking grasp of obligation that had devoured her life. She gazed at the note for what felt like forever, the paper trembling marginally in her hands. It was a bet, but what choice did she have? Her current occupations scarcely secured the fundamentals, let alone made a mark on the obligation her father had cleared out behind. This might be the opportunity she'd been holding up for, the one that might alter everything. For another few days, Lila submerged herself in her modern role at Klein Businesses. The work was required, more distant than she had expected, and the hours were overwhelming. Each day drained into the following, a tireless cycle of assignments that cleared out her depleted but decided. She had no choice but to adjust rapidly, knowing that her whole future pivoted on her victory in this job. Sebastian Klein was a requesting boss, his desires tall and his persistence lean. He was continuously exact, continuously in control, and he never faltered to let Lila know when she fell short of his demanding benchmarks. But in spite of his cold deportment, there were minutes when she caught impressions of something else, something darker, covered up underneath the surface. It was in the way his eyes would sometimes wait on her, a transitory escalation that made her uneasy, in spite of the fact that she couldn’t really pinpoint why. Lila attempted to thrust those contemplations aside, centering on her work. She was here to do work, to win cash and pay off her father’s obligations. Not individual issues Sebastian had were none of her concerns. But as the days passed, she couldn’t offer assistance but felt that she was being drawn more into his world, a world where control and control were money, and where privileged insights were hidden around each corner. It wasn’t long some time recently she started to take note the whispers in the passages, the way a few of the other representatives would see at her with a blend of feel sorry for and caution. There were rumors, she learned, about Sebastian and his companion Julius, a man Lila had to meet. The two were infamous for their adventures, their taste for ladies, and their neglect of boundaries. The stories were sufficient to make Lila’s skin slither, but she kept her head down, refusing to let the chatter influence her. One evening, after another long day at the office, Lila was on her way out when she heard voices coming from Sebastian’s office. The entryway was somewhat partially open, and she stopped, debating whether to report her nearness or discreetly slip absent. Interest got the way better of her, and she inclined closer, tuning in to the discussion inside. “…you know the board is getting restless,” a new voice said, deep
