Chapter 15There's no easy way to get from Alliance, Ohio to Carroll, Iowa; driving will rob you of at least thirteen hours, probably more like fifteen with stops for food and gas. Flying wasn't a whole lot better—no direct flight, TSA, airports in general, you get the picture—but it shaved the travel time down to seven or eight hours, making it the lesser of two evils. Phil and I drove to Akron/Canton and caught a flight to Des Moines with a brief stop in Detroit. The plan was to rent another car in Des Moines and drive the ninety or so miles to Carroll. While Phil dealt with the rental car agent, I wondered around the lot, checking out the inventory.
