It had been two nights since the party and of course, again, I had work. It was always so exhausting, but being able to talk to Jamie did make things a lot better. Being able to talk with him, despite how much he frustrated me did make the job more enjoyable. I had brought some more books with me this time though, new work that I really hoped he would like. Some of the books were ones that I had constantly reread over and over hundreds of times. And since he was one of the only few people I knew who also enjoyed reading, I was hoping to get his input on them.
I brought the books inside with me, leaving my bookpack behind. I knew if I brought it, he would want to return the others and I wanted him to keep them. I don't know why, I guess I just felt bad and figured he would want to have the chance to reread them someday and having them with him would be more convenient.
" Hey, I brought you some more books" I smiled, sliding the books through the door slot which was left a small echo as they each hit the ground.
" Jamie? " I called out and received no reply. I called out a few more times but still heard nothing. I immediately headed to Ms.Phillips office, worried that something had happened whilst I was gone over the weekend.
" Where is Jamie? " I demanded to know, realizing I should probably calm down afterwards, this was my boss and she wasn't exactly obligated to tell me anything. But judging from her expression, she seemed to know that I was going to come in and ask about him.
" Allison..he was taken to the ER the other evening" she confessed with a concerned look.
" Which Hospital? " I demanded to know. I don't know why I felt the need to know this information. But I wanted to see for myself if he was okay..he was my friend whether he wanted to be or not. I just knew I wasnt entitled to it.
" He isn't at the local hospital and even if he was, you wouldn't be allowed to see him " She answered.
" I promise you he is fine. He just had a coughing fit and we needed to make sure he was safe so we rushed him to the hospital. We unfortuently don't have the facilities here to help him if it was an internal issue. You know that. He will be back soon I'd imagine"
" I need to go see him" I pleaded. But Ms.Phillips shook her head.
" Allison, you can't so see him. Even if you knew his location, they wouldn't let you in for your own safety" and I knew she was right. They probably had guards with him. " No go finish your shift. And don't worry, he will back with us perhaps by the end of the day or tomorrow at the latest. Don't worry so much" She assures me. I know she was concerned that I was so concerned about him. She probably thought I was going to break the rules of the facility but I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't risk losing this job. It was way too much money for one. And for two, he needed a friend here and I am the only one he seems to communicate somewhat with.
" Yeah, okay " I nodded as I made my way out and and completed my shift. At the end of it, I did take advantage of Jamie being gone and got to go inside his room. It was dark, very dark. There was a bed, and a dresser and that was about it. He had the books neatly stacked on the dresser. I looked a bit more around the room and could that most of the white paint had chipped off the walls and the light didn't even seem to work in the room. On top of that, I noticed that there wasn't a buzzer button even hooked up in his room. " What the hell?" Why didn't he have a buzzer? That made no sense. It was for the safety of the patients and the sheer fact that he was even discovered in time to get to the hospital was surprising.
And that is when I developed the brilliant idea to go to the store after I finished my shift and purchase a set of walkie talkies. They costed alot, but had amazing range on them. If he wasn't back by tomorrow, I would slip this into his room, that way he had it and could communicate with me if he needed help. I would make sure that he got it. I would make sure that he was safe. Plus, it meant we could keep each other company even when I wasn't at work. I hoped that he would actually like the idea.
