Chapter Three: The Door

1007 Words
I woke up, my head's still hurting from last night. I began getting dressed, and made my way out of the house. I made sure to wake up a little early, because I did not want to have to deal with my parents again. I know for certain that they had to realise that I left last night and I really didn't want to deal with the questions. I didn't even bother trying to take the Jeep this time, and instead opted to take my bike. I peddled my way down the street and eventually arrived at work, Slightly earlier than I had originally intended. I walked inside and reported for duty immediately. I had already been explained the entire process. Clock in, and do the morning rounds. The rounds usually took about an 30 minutes and would be every hour. But everything seemed to be in good shape as far as I could tell. That was until I made my way to what my boss called " Sector F" which is where Jamie as well as many others had been housed. I checked on each patient before making my way to the metal door hiding Jamie behind it. I couldn't see him, because there was no window on it, but I knew I needed to check on him to make sure he had made it through the night. " Jamie? " I called out but received no reply. " Patient Jamie Kellis. Please respond so that I know you are safe! " I demanded but still received no reply. At this point, I was expected to call for backup but I decided to give it one last shot. I kneeled down and slide open the small food slot and peeked inside, hoping to see anything such a sign of life but the room was completely dark. " Patient Jamie.." I called out again, and finally recieved a reply. " You aren't suppose to open the food slot. That is going to get you in trouble" a weakened voice called back to me. " I had to ensure that you were safe. Why did you not reply the first time I asked? " I tried to sound authoritative but it felt awkward to me. I had never really taken on a role where I was in charge before so this was all new to me. " Because these people don't care if I'm safe. They hope I rot away here. I'd answer if I knew they cared" he replied, which saddened me slightly. " We do care about you. We want to make sure you are safe and happy whilst also keeping you as well as ourselves safe" I was trying to respond as best as I could according to what I had been taught the day before. "You don't really know your employer very well. You aren't going to last long here " He responded. He sounded to be around her age, and he sounded..sad. He didn't sound threatening or ominous whatsoever. Nothing like a killer. " Well we shall see about that.." I responded before walking away. I did my job. I checked on him to make sure he was safe and that is all I owed him. No further conversation was allowed at this facility. Plus, I didn't exactly appreciate his lack of faith in me. I headed back to my station and waited there for my next round. The snack machine in the break room had slim pickings to choose from and what they did have, didn't look appealing. And much like the snack machine, the entire Room looked completely bland. I didn't really want to continue making rounds, at least in section F but I knew I would have too. And before I knew it, it was my shift again and I had to walk around the institute. Though this time, when I arrived at section F. I was slightly more prepared. " Patient Jamie. Are you okay? " I called out and this time received a reply. " Yes Worker whatever your name is. Patient Jamie is fine. Thank you for asking " His sarcastic tone was really beginning to bother me. " Don't freaking flatter yourself with your little attitude. I am just doing my job " I crossed my arms, not bothering to look through the food slot again. " For Now" he responded. " What do you mean?" I asked, worried that he might be making a threat. " Like I said. I don't see you lasting long here" he explained. " Why do you care if I do or I don't? " he seemed to have a vested interest and of course, I had more than enough if his attitude so I fully intended to call him out on it. " I don't" he snapped back at me which made me even more angry. " Now you listen here. I don't know you and you damn sure don't know me. But whether I will or won't do well at this job is none of your concern. I would ask you kindly to keep your opinions to yourself " " And I will kindly deny your request" God he was so frustrating. Somehow more than Dennis. At least with Dennis, I knew what to expect. " Bzzz Bzzz" My phone began vibrating in my pocket. I pulled it out, and turned my back to Jamie's door and checked it, thinking it could be Mom or Dennis. And much to my surprise, it actually was Dennis. He sent me a text message saying that we should break up. My heart broke in that moment. How could he just leave..after everything we had been through. I didn't even realize the amount of tears streaming down my face. " Are..you okay? " Jamie called from behind me. The door flap had opened slightly, but I couldn't see any fingers. I tried to collect myself, before answering. " Stay out of my business Patient Jamie.." I answered, and walked away from him.
