Chapter One
The rain came down in sheets, driven sideways by the wind, soaking Stella to the bone as she stumbled along the deserted highway. The night was pitch-black except for the brief flashes of lightning that illuminated the endless stretch of road ahead—empty, unforgiving, and cold. Her head throbbed painfully, the injury on her temple pulsing with every unsteady step. She lifted a trembling hand to her face and felt the sticky warmth of blood beneath the rain. She didn’t know how much longer she could keep going. Her legs felt weak, her vision blurred, and fear pressed heavy against her chest. Then—hope. In the distance, faint but unmistakable, headlights cut through the darkness. A car. Relief surged through her, sudden and overwhelming. Stella tried to lift her arm, to wave it, to do anything that might make the driver see her. But her body betrayed her. The world tilted, the roar of the storm growing distant, and she froze—caught like a deer in the glare of approaching light. The ground rushed up to meet her. She never felt the impact. Tyres screamed as a red Ferrari skidded to a halt, stopping just inches from the crumpled figure lying in the middle of the road. The engine idled harshly in the rain before the driver’s door flew open. The man who stepped out hadn’t expected this. He stared down at the young woman sprawled on the asphalt—soaked, unconscious, her slender body unnaturally still. Dark hair clung to her pale face, and a thin trail of blood disappeared beneath the collar of her torn jacket. “Jesus…” he muttered, already kneeling beside her. She was alive. He could see her chest rising faintly, feel the warmth of her skin beneath his fingers despite the cold rain. Without hesitation, he shrugged off his coat and draped it over her, shielding her from the storm. Whatever had happened to her, it had nearly killed her. Stella had never imagined her life would end—or begin again—on a road like this. She had grown up believing she was free. The Romany camp had been her whole world: open skies, crackling fires, music that drifted through the night, and the comforting closeness of her people. Her gypsy parents had raised her with care and caution, teaching her the old ways—how to survive, how to read the land, how to protect herself. She had been loved, cherished, watched over. For years, life had felt like one long adventure. Until she noticed the way the Gypsy King began to look at her. At first, it was just glances—lingering too long, eyes following her as she moved through the camp. Then came the attention, the gifts, the expectations she had never agreed to. By the time she understood what he wanted, it was already too late. She had said no. He hadn’t accepted it. Fear had driven her into the night with nothing but the clothes on her back, her heart pounding harder with every step away from the only home she’d ever known. And now she lay unconscious on a rain-soaked road, her fate resting in the hands of a stranger.
