Carlisle City Hospital was one of the most prestigious private hospitals in the country, owned by a family group. Only the best doctors, nursing staff, and cutting-edge technology were permitted within its walls, ensuring high-class care for every patient.
Twenty minutes after leaving the highway, Kurt’s convoy pulled up to the main entrance. Doctors and nurses were already waiting outside, a gurney prepared and ready to receive the young woman.
As soon as Kurt stopped the Land Rover, the hospital staff sprang into action. They gently lifted Stella onto the gurney, her body limp and drenched, and hurried her inside toward the emergency treatment area.
Shaun ran beside him down the hospital corridor, voice anxious. “What happened? Are you sure she’s okay?”
Kurt’s jaw tightened, his gaze fixed ahead. “I’m not sure,” he admitted. “I was driving along with the headlights on full beam. I saw a figure in the distance—slumped in the middle of the road. I slowed down, and as I stopped, she collapsed in front of the car.”
He glanced briefly at Shaun. “I don’t think I hit her, but she has a nasty bump on her head. I need to check in with the doctors now.”
They reached the emergency treatment door just as Doctor George emerged, his expression shifting from surprise to professional concern when he saw Kurt.
“Kurt,” he said briskly. “What have we got?”
Kurt’s hand rested lightly on the gurney. “Found her on the highway. Unconscious, head trauma. She’s soaking wet and freezing. I need you to take over from here.”
Doctor George nodded. “Leave it to us. We’ll handle it.”
Kurt hesitated for only a moment, watching as the medical team wheeled her inside. He felt a tightening in his chest—an unfamiliar, protective tension that refused to loosen.
Shaun caught his eye. “Should we wait?”
Kurt shook his head, his voice low but firm. “I’ll be staying close. She’s in good hands—but I’m not leaving until I know she’s safe.”
The emergency doors swung closed behind them, and the sterile lights of the hospital swallowed the figure of the girl who had appeared out of nowhere, changing the course of the night—and of Kurt’s life—forever.
