Chapter One: A Mother on Her Knees
Chapter One: A Mother on Her Knees
Rain poured heavily against the windows of the small office building, turning the city streets into rivers of mud and headlights. Inside, Jules Jordan sat at her desk, her trembling fingers clutching her phone.
The screen displayed a message from her neighbor.
"Jayda collapsed again. She's burning with fever. Please come quickly."
Jules felt the world tilt beneath her.
"No... no, not again," she whispered.
Her twins, Jayda and Jayden, were all she had. Five years ago, she had become pregnant after a night she barely remembered—a night she wished she could erase forever. She never knew who the father was. The shame had driven friends away, and the responsibility had aged her beyond her twenty-eight years.
Every day was a battle.
Rent.
Food.
Medicine.
School fees.
Life.
And she was losing.
Jules rushed into her manager's office.
"Sir, please," she begged, tears already filling her eyes. "My daughter is sick. I need to take her to the hospital."
The middle-aged man didn't even look up from his paperwork.
"You've already missed two days this month."
"Please, sir."
"No."
The word hit her like a slap.
Jules fell to her knees.
The pride she had fought so hard to keep shattered.
"My child could die," she sobbed. "I'm begging you."
Several employees stopped working and stared.
Some looked away.
Others whispered.
No one helped.
"I don't have money for transportation," she continued, her voice breaking. "Please lend me something. I'll pay it back. I swear."
The manager sighed impatiently.
"You're creating a scene."
At that exact moment, the office doors opened.
A tall man stepped inside.
The room instantly fell silent.
Liam Lorenzo.
Dark-haired, broad-shouldered, dressed in an expensive charcoal suit, he carried himself with effortless authority. Beside him walked his assistant.
Liam had arrived in the country only weeks earlier.
His father, Lorenzo Luca, had spent years pressuring him to settle down.
"Find a wife, Liam. Build a family before it's too late."
Liam never cared much for marriage.
Until fate walked him into that office.
His eyes landed on the woman kneeling on the floor.
Her clothes were worn.
Her face was pale from exhaustion.
Tears streamed down her cheeks as she begged for help no one was willing to give.
Something twisted painfully inside his chest.
He had met powerful women.
Beautiful women.
Sophisticated women.
Yet none of them had ever looked at him the way this woman looked at the floor—completely broken, carrying a pain that seemed far too heavy for one person.
"What is happening here?" Liam asked quietly.
Nobody answered.
The manager immediately stood.
"Mr. Lorenzo! I didn't know you were coming."
Liam ignored him.
His gaze never left Jules.
She quickly wiped her tears and lowered her head in embarrassment.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I didn't mean to disturb anyone."
The words shattered him.
A woman begging for help was apologizing.
Liam crouched until they were eye level.
"What is your name?"
She hesitated.
"Jules."
"Why are you crying, Jules?"
At the gentleness in his voice, her composure cracked.
"My daughter is sick."
The words came out in a whisper.
"I need to get to the hospital."
"And?"
Tears rolled down again.
"I don't have any money."
For a moment, Liam simply stared.
He had grown up surrounded by wealth.
Problems were solved with a phone call.
Yet this woman was facing the possibility of losing her child because she couldn't afford transportation.
His heart clenched.
"Where are your children?"
"At home."
Without hesitation, Liam stood.
"David."
His assistant immediately stepped forward.
"Yes, sir."
"Go get her children."
The assistant blinked.
"Sir?"
"Now."
Then Liam turned back to Jules.
She looked confused.
Terrified.
Hopeful.
All at once.
He gently extended his hand.
"Come with me."
Jules stared at it.
No one had offered her help in years.
No one without expecting something in return.
"Why?" she asked shakily.
Liam's expression softened.
"Because no mother should have to beg when her child is suffering."
At those words, Jules burst into tears.
Real tears.
The kind she had been holding back for years.
Liam carefully helped her to her feet.
For the first time in a long time, she didn't feel alone.
And for the first time in his life, Liam felt his heart choosing someone before his mind had the chance to object.
Neither of them knew it then.
But that rainy afternoon would change all of their lives forever.
