Chapter Nine: Choosing Each Other

Chapter Nine: Choosing Each Other The world seemed to fall silent. Even the rain felt distant. Jules stared at Liam. Certain she had heard him wrong. Certain her exhausted heart had imagined it. But Liam's eyes never left hers. "I think I'm in love with you." The words hung between them. Real. Terrifying. Beautiful. Inside the apartment, Jayda slapped a hand over her mouth to stop herself from squealing. Jayden failed completely. A loud gasp escaped him. Both adults immediately looked toward the door. The twins ducked behind the wall. A crash followed. Then frantic whispering. Liam laughed. Jules laughed too. And somehow the tension eased. Just a little. But not enough. Because the confession still remained. Waiting. Demanding an answer. Liam looked back at her. His smile faded. "I didn't plan to say it tonight." "Then why did you?" "Because I was afraid." Jules blinked. "Afraid?" "Of losing you." Her heart squeezed painfully. Liam took another step closer. "I spent my whole life knowing exactly what was expected of me." His voice was calm. Honest. "My future was planned before I could even understand it." Jules listened quietly. "But then I met you." A tear slipped down her cheek. Liam smiled softly. "And suddenly none of those plans mattered." The tears came faster now. Because nobody had ever chosen her before. Not truly. Not completely. People chose easier options. Safer options. Better options. But Liam was standing here. In the rain. Looking at her like she was the only person in the world. And she didn't know what to do with that. "I don't understand." The words escaped before she could stop them. Liam frowned. "What don't you understand?" "Why me?" His expression softened. "Jules..." "No, really." She laughed through her tears. "I'm a mess." He opened his mouth. She continued anyway. "I have debts." He remained silent. "I'm raising twins alone." Still silent. "I don't even know who their father is." Her voice broke. "I have nothing to offer you." For a moment Liam simply stared at her. Then he shook his head. Slowly. As if she had completely missed the point. "You think those things define you." Jules looked away. "Don't they?" "No." His answer came immediately. Without hesitation. Without doubt. Liam gently lifted her chin. Making her look at him. "What defines you is that you keep going." His thumb brushed away a tear. "You love those children with everything you have." Another tear fell. "You work harder than anyone I know." Jules couldn't speak. "You survived things that would have broken most people." His voice softened. "And somehow you still find reasons to smile." The tears became impossible to stop. Because nobody had ever seen her that clearly before. Nobody. Not even herself. For years she had looked in the mirror and seen her failures. Her mistakes. Her regrets. But Liam saw something different. Someone different. Someone worth loving. And for the first time... She wanted to believe him. "I love you too." The words escaped before she could stop them. Silence. Liam froze. Jules froze. Neither seemed to realize what she'd just said. Then Liam's eyes widened. "What?" A laugh escaped her. Wet and shaky. "I said I love you too." This time she meant every word. Liam stared. Then smiled. The kind of smile that transformed his entire face. The kind of smile people spent lifetimes searching for. And before either of them could overthink it— He pulled her into his arms. Jules buried her face against his chest. Laughing and crying at the same time. For the first time in years... She felt safe. Not because her problems had disappeared. Not because life had suddenly become easy. But because she wasn't carrying everything alone anymore. --- The apartment door burst open. "FINALLY!" Both adults jumped apart. Jayda and Jayden came running outside. Unable to contain themselves. Jayda pointed accusingly. "That took forever." Jayden nodded. "We've known for months." Jules nearly choked. "What?" The twins exchanged confused looks. "You didn't know?" Liam laughed so hard he had to bend over. Jules covered her face in embarrassment. "Please tell me you're joking." "We're not." Jayda grinned. "You smile differently when he's around." "And he looks at you like you're chocolate cake," Jayden added. Liam immediately burst out laughing again. Jules wanted the ground to swallow her whole. The twins were absolutely delighted. --- Later that night, after the children had fallen asleep, Liam and Jules sat together on the tiny apartment balcony. The rain had finally stopped. The city lights sparkled in the distance. For a while neither spoke. Neither needed to. Then Liam reached for her hand. She let him. Their fingers intertwined naturally. Comfortably. Like they belonged there. "What happens now?" Jules asked softly. Liam smiled. "Now?" She nodded. "Your father hates me." "He doesn't hate you." "He literally offered to pay me to disappear." Liam blinked. "What?" Jules winced. "Oops." "What?" "Long story." Liam groaned. "My father is impossible." Jules laughed. "That seems to run in the family." He squeezed her hand. "Maybe." Then his expression became serious. "Whatever happens next..." His eyes held hers. "...we face it together." The simple promise settled deep inside her heart. Together. Nobody had ever offered her that before. And suddenly the future didn't feel so frightening. For the first time in a very long time... It felt hopeful. Neither of them noticed the black car parked across the street. Or the man sitting inside. Watching. Waiting. Watching the apartment lights. Watching Liam. Watching Jules. And when his phone rang, he answered immediately. "Is it done?" a cold voice asked. The man nodded. "Yes." "Good." The voice lowered. "Then bring me the information about the twins' father." The call ended. The man looked toward the apartment one last time. Then drove away. Unaware that the truth he was about to uncover... Would change everything. End of Chapter Nine.
