Monica's POV:

On Halloween, when I was 5 months pregnant, I suddenly got a call from my husband in the future.

The moment I heard he was calling from 10 years ahead, I eagerly asked, "Did we have a boy or a girl? Is my mother doing any better?"

Before I could ask anything else, he spoke.

"I cheated on you with your best friend. We sent our child to an orphanage because the trauma left the kid with brain damage. Your mother died. As for you, you had a breakdown after the divorce and spent the rest of your life in a psychiatric hospital. You died of depression."

I froze, cold sweat breaking out across my back.

Then I heard laughter behind me.

My husband, Derek Vaughn, was smiling at me. "Happy Halloween, honey. You didn't actually believe that, did you? I was just trying to scare you."

My best friend, Sabrina Mercer, came over and snuggled against me.

"Exactly, Monica. Look how pale you are! You didn't really believe it, did you?"

Neither of them seemed at all unusual, and I let out a quiet breath.

Before I could answer, comments suddenly appeared in front of me.

A: [He pretty much predicted the future. Her whole family really does end up that miserable. It just hasn't happened yet. Right now, he's only cheating with her best friend.]

B: [Poor female lead. She's only got a month of peace left. Once the other woman gets pregnant, she'll upset the heroine's mom so badly that her mom dies. That's when things really go downhill.]

I gripped the sheet, my face draining of what little color it had left.

As soon as they left, I called a lawyer.

"I want a divorce. As quickly as possible."

Chapter 1
The lawyer agreed without hesitation. "I can send you the papers tonight." I nodded and hung up, then hurried out of bed to pack. The comments in front of me suddenly came faster. A: [Wait, why is she getting divorced now? That isn't supposed to happen for another year.] B: [Maybe she's getting suspicious.] I tightened my grip on the clothes in my hands. I didn't know whether the comments were telling the truth, but at least one thing they had said had already proved true. Besides, I couldn't stay with a man who cheated. Just as I finished packing, I heard Derek and Sabrina talking outside the door. The moment he saw me, Derek put down the groceries and wrapped his arms around me, looking worried. "Honey, why are you out of bed? You're pregnant. If you need something, just let me know." His concern seemed genuine. Every night during my pregnancy, he rubbed oil on my belly. If I craved a snack in the middle of the night, he would drive dozens of miles to get it for me. I suddenly wanted to ask him why he had cheated when we already had a baby on the way. Maybe the comments were lying. Before I could get the question out, Sabrina screamed beside us. Bottles and jars clattered to the floor. Derek immediately let go of me and strode over to take her hand. "Why weren't you more careful? Come on. I'll bandage that for you." I watched them without a word. An awkward silence settled over us. Sabrina glanced at me, then seemed to remember herself and pulled her hand away. "I'm fine. Really. Take care of Monica." "No. Nothing's going to happen to Monica at home. You need this treated right now." With that, he took Sabrina upstairs. Watching them go, I lost the urge to ask my question. There was no point anymore. When they came back downstairs 10 minutes later, Sabrina's lips were slightly swollen and her eyes were glazed. She went straight into the kitchen without even looking at me. A: [They've got some nerve. His wife was downstairs, and they practically had s*x upstairs.] B: [Isn't this when the other woman gets pregnant? He hooks up with her because he needs s*x while his wife's pregnant. What he doesn't know is that she wants to hurt his baby. She's been slipping slow-acting drugs into the food.] My heart clenched. I looked toward the kitchen. Derek glanced at me and smiled. "Are you hungry? I'll go help get dinner ready." "No!" My reaction was so sharp that he stopped short. I stood and took out my phone. "I'm moving into a maternity center tonight," I said flatly. Derek frowned in disapproval. "How could strangers take better care of you than your own family?" Before I could answer, Sabrina hurried out of the kitchen, her eyes red. "Monica, is my cooking not good enough for you? Or don't you trust me?" She looked so wounded, but I was the one aching inside. We had been best friends for 20 years. Before my father died, he had even asked Sabrina to help me choose a man who would treat me well. Now she was sleeping with my husband while I was pregnant. Before I could finish speaking, Derek cut in. "Monica, isn't Sabrina your best friend? Don't you think you're hurting her? We agreed to celebrate Halloween together. Being pregnant doesn't mean everyone has to take your side." His words cut through me. My throat tightened, and all I could repeat was, "I'm leaving tonight." Tears spilled down Sabrina's cheeks. Without another word, she ran outside. Derek glanced at me and sighed. "I'll go check on her. It's dangerous out there at night. When we get back, you need to apologize. You've really hurt her." Then he ran after her. I stood in the doorway as the cold wind blew in. Pulling my padded coat tighter around me, I picked up my suitcase and took a cab away from the house.
