Chloe’s POV
I watched him rake his hands through his hair, eyes closed like he’d regretted asking that.
“Why…” I stuttered, pulling a few strands of hair from the back of my ear.
“Why would you want to know that in particular,” I asked, fluttering my eyelashes.
Silence fell heavy in the room as I stared back at him, waiting for a response.
“I already know the answer to that,” He responded, breaking the silence between us. And this time, he had his eyes locked on mine with a barely perceptible shrug.
My eyebrows shot up almost instantly at his response, as I had both hands wrapped against my chest staring back at him.
“Single, and not interested thank you,” He read out loud, tapping swiftly on the keys of his computer. I shot him a glare, wondering why he’d said that.
“Your f*******: profile says that,” He added.
Instantly I quickly remembered I had that displayed on my profile, a couple of months ago. I bit my lips at his icy tone trying so hard not to look him in the eye.
Way to go Chloe.
“Any family members?” He asked, snapping me out of my reverie. For some reason, I couldn't understand the purpose of his questioning. Finding it quite odd, I adjusted my purse and then perked up to my feet.
“I should go now!” I said, staring at the Displayed name on his desk. Which happened to be the exact name, called by the lady at the cafe a few days back.
Lucas Salvatore
“We're not done here,” He shot at me. His tone was suddenly hoarse as he glared at me as if being upset over some damn issue.
I paused for a couple of seconds and then looked away. Knowing It had been a wrong Idea to agree to come.
As I turned to leave, my eyes caught sight of the frame of the little kid from the other day, and for some reason, a smile found its way to my lips.
“You're…” Lucas began.
“You're the reason he's here,” He said.
With my back against him, I held on tight to my dress as I headed for the door. Ignoring all he had to say.
“If it hadn’t been for your kind gesture a few years back, we’d have lost him,” He added.
A quizzical line formed between my brows at his response, causing a lot in my head that I was forced to stare back at him.
“Could you please repeat that, but on a clearer note,” I said.
“The blood donor from years back, at Pious Specialist Hospital,” Lucas added. Surprisingly, he sounded a lot different this time.
‘Blood donor’ I thought to myself.
‘Could it be that I had somehow found my way into the lives of the family I had helped a couple of years back’ I asked myself.
“You saved the little kid’s life,” He added. My eyes widened in shock when the realization of what he meant sunk in. The word cuts through me, settling at the back of my mind with all of the others. Crazy, impossible.
“But all of that wasn't the main reason I’d asked for you to come,” Lucas said.
“Please,” He added, gesturing that I sit.
For a split second, everything around me felt so unreal that all I could pick from all that was happening was the fact that I was standing right in front of the Father of a child I’d helped donate blood to, a couple of years ago.
“Chloe!” He called out, snapping me out of my reverie as I had my gaze back on him.
“Here,” Lucas added, handing out an envelope to me as I had my brows creased in confusion.
“No, no I can't accept any favors for that,” I said, nodding in disagreement as I pulled away from him.
“I have to go now, Mr Lucas, it was nice speaking to you,” I added, wanting to perk up to my feet. But then he leaned forward and then grabbed me by the wrist, holding me back.
My heart raced to see that Lucas Salvator had his hands wrapped around mine. My blood froze at the sight of what was happening and all I could do was stare back at him like some moron.
“Just have a look,” He said.
I grabbed the file and then had it opened, like he’d asked. Just instantly, I hated the little prick of nerves I got in my stomach from staring at the content of the file.
“A one-year contract to pretend to be his mother?” I read through gritted teeth as I leaned forward. Knowing such matters weren’t meant to be heard by another.
“How Is that even possible?” I shot at him. Wondering where all of this was coming from.
“What would people say?”
“That I'm just some college student who found a way miraculously into the ——” I continued, but then was cut off by Lucas’s fingers midway in the air as he stared at me.
“Let them think whatever it is they want Chloe,” He responded.
“Aren't you bothered about what the press would say when they see you with a college student?” I asked, a bit confused about what game he was trying to play.
He leaned forward by his desk, with both hands pressed against the glass and eyes strained directly on mine.
“All I care about is the well-being of that child and that's all that matters,” Lucas responded.
“What about his mother?” I asked, feeling curious as to what had happened in the past and why it was that she wasn't here.
The look on his face took a whole different turn as I froze staring, slowly regretting that I’d asked that.
“I guess I know the answer to that already,” I responded, pulling a few strands of hair to the back of my ear.
My eyes trailed off to the picture of Flynn the little child and then back at Lucas in front of me.
After much contemplation on whether or not I should take all of what's happening into consideration. I finally agreed.
“Fine, I’ll do it,” I said.
