Chloe's POV
“Pardon?” I asked, with my brows raised as I stared back at him. Wanting to be sure I had heard him correctly.
“It's parenting day,” Lucas responded.
“Oh but the contract doesn't include me showing up as his mother at such important places,” I continued, this time I had my gaze directly on him waiting to hear more of his response.
“I guess you didn't read through the contract Miss…” He said, as he glared at me almost instantly.
“I'm Chloe,” I corrected, frowning at him.
But then, he had his gaze taken off me scrolling through his phone refusing to respond.
“I told Flynn you're coming along and that's final!” He finally said, breaking the silence between us.
The nerve of him to think I have no say in what and where I want to be.
I had my arms wrapped against my chest, staring into the road nervously, wondering what on earth I was to do at a kindergarten parenting day event.
“What am I supposed to say, I mean it's my first time attending such…?” I mumbled but the glare he gave me afterward made me go silent almost instantly.
“Go with the flow,” He said.
“But first, we have to do something about that outfit of yours,” Lucas added, with his eyes trailing all over the dress I had on.
I stared at the dress I had on, wondering what the hell was wrong with what I was wearing.
“What's wrong with what I have on?” I grimaced.
“Next turn Mark,” He called out to the driver, adjusting the collars of his shirt with his eyes still locked on the screen of his phone as the car came to a halt.
I peeked out the window, wondering why he’d asked for a stop. Just when I’d done that, my eyes widened in shock seeing that he had me taken down to the mall for a change of clothes like he’d said earlier.
“We have thirty minutes,” He said, as he hopped out of the car and headed for the mall.
The word “We” sent shivers down my spine and I couldn't help but wonder whether or not all of this was happening.
I walked into the mall, took a deep breath, and forced my feet to move toward one of the sales attendants by the counter. Who had a smile creased on her face like she’d been expecting us.
She was even prettier from up close, her lush hair was loose on her shoulders and it reminded me of those ads for shampoo. Hair does that thing where it looks impossibly smooth and soft, making you feel terrible about your split ends and frizzy hair. She radiated confidence which made me sort of envious.
“Welcome Miss, I’ve got just the perfect fit for you,” The receptionist added.
“Come right this way,” She said, grabbing me by the hand as she had me pulled into one of their luxurious closets.
I had my eyes widened in shock seeing how properly packed they had each dress tucked into the closet and how expensive they looked. Even from a distance, one could tell.
“Over here miss,” Her voice from earlier cuts through the thoughts in my head as I snapped back to reality staring at her in front of me.
Just when I looked at her, I realized she held onto a red flower-patterned dress alongside a blue satin dress.
“You can try them on,” She said, handing them out to me, pointing to the dressing room at the far corners of the closet.
“Thanks,” I responded, walking over to the dressing room.
In less than a couple of minutes, I had both tried on, and judging from how different I looked in front of the mirror, I had the blue satin dress picked over the other.
I had my ponytail dropped, applied gloss over my dry lips, smiling into my reflection. On stepping out of the closet, I met Lucas by the entrance.
For some reason, the expression he had on changed almost instantly as his eyes trailed down to the blue dress I was wearing, and then back into my eyes.
“Mark is…” He stuttered, tearing his gaze away from me as he ran a hand through his hair.
‘Did I do something wrong?’ I thought to myself.
“Flynn’s waiting,” Lucas finally said, headed for his car.
We both hopped into the car and headed for Flynn’s school like he’d said and in less than a couple of minutes we’d arrived.
I gulped nervously staring at the flashy cars, and surprisingly luxurious dressed couples present for their kids as well.
“Parenting day huh?” I said, still staring out the window.
“What happens on parenting day?” I asked curiously, wondering why they all looked so elegantly dressed for some child event.
“You’ll see,” Lucas said, as he hopped out of the car and almost instantly he had my side of the car opened. He had his hands stretched out to me, wanting to help me out of the car.
The minute I stepped out, all eyes were suddenly glued on me and all I could do was force a smile in the direction of the few faces I could get.
“You're nervous,” Lucas’s voice snapped me out of my reverie as I tried to stay composed headed into the school.
Just as we got into the school premises where the other parents were gathered, I caught sight of Flynn. And couldn't help but smile at how cute he looked, even from a distance.
“Mummy!” He called out the minute our eyes met as he ran towards me. I knew that at this point, I just had to play the part. “Flynn’s Mother,”
“Flynn honey!” I responded with a smile creased on my face as I bent to the floor, with my arms stretched out waiting on his little cute embrace.
I had my arms wrapped around him, holding on so tight to the little kid in front of me. And surprisingly for some reason, it all felt right.
