Amelia’s POV
My heart hammered so loudly in my chest that it drowned out most other sounds. Even my own words felt like they were far away from me.
Despite the physical distance between us, I was so nervous to be talking to Damien like this again that all the words I had rehearsed saying to him were jumbled up in my head. In my moments of hesitation, Damien pressed forward.
“Are you ready to come home?”
That assuredness in his voice that I was only calling to be rescued gave me the jolt of courage I needed to start speaking again.
