I couldn’t let Claire think I was leaving for her, when truly it was Amelia who helped me make this choice.
“I will go,” I said, “And you will also leave. And we’ll do it not for any other reason but giving Amelia the space she deserves.”
Claire frowned, but didn’t argue. “Whatever you think,” she said.
It was good enough for now.
Amelia’s POV
When Jake came to collect me the next morning, I thought I had prepared myself enough to see Damien again that day. The night had been difficult. I barely slept at all, but in the near-morning hours I had decided that I would face this problem head on.
Just because Damien was here with Claire didn’t mean that my entire trip had to be ruined. What did I care anyway? It wasn’t as if I had wanted the job. To be free of Damien would be a blessing.
