My Wife Is Dead, But Who Is This Woman?
Rain fell on the fresh grave.
Gu Chen stood alone under a black umbrella. He stared at the tombstone. Three words were carved on it.
Mo Xue. Beloved Wife.
He almost laughed at that word. Beloved.
She had cheated on him more times than he could count. She had lied to his face again and again, and he had let her. Everyone told him to divorce her. He never did. He didn't even know why. Maybe he loved her too much to let go. Maybe he hated her too much to set her free. It didn't matter now. She was dead, and he was the only one standing at her funeral.
No family. No friends. All the people she choosed over him, none of them were present. Just him.
"Goodbye, Xue," he said quietly.
He turned and walked away without looking back.
He entered his car and shut his eyes. Gripping the wheel hard, holding back his tears. Suddenly his phone buzzed and he checked it. It was from the housekeeper. "Sir, madam's portrait just arrived, should I asked them to send it back?"
He sighed. Weeks ago, before she died, Mo Xue forced him to customize a huge portrait of herself. She wanted to hang it inside her bedroom. That was just like her, always wanting to be seen.
He texted back. "Hang it inside her room" and dropped his phone, ignited the engine and drove away.
-----
The house was silent when he got home. He walked straight to his bedroom without a single word, loosened his tie, and laid onto his bed without changing his clothes. Totally exhausted.
Inside Mo Xue's room, the light started, it started as a tiny spark in the corner of the portrait no bigger than a firefly. Then it spread, like water soaking into paper, until the whole painting glowed silver and the painted eyes blinked.
Far away, in a realm no mortal eye could see, a woman had just been thrown into the Void.
Su Ning did not struggle, even as he guards dragged her before the Immortal Court, and as her own father read her sentence, she stood tall with her chin high.
"Su Ning of the Ninth Palace," the Elder said. "You killed a man without thinking twice."
"I killed a man who beat up my sister and slept with another woman in her sight, it outrageous," Su Ning answered. "If i reincarnate a million times. I would do it again. But this time, i would chop him into pieces."
"Enough! You unfial child, He was still a member of the Ling Clan. Your brother in law!, you beheaded him just like that, and you don't even have a sense of remorse. You have totally disgraced this family."
"He disgraced himself the moment he cheated on her. But everyone of you are blind to see it, and as a father, you don't even have a sense of justice!, what a father you are."
No one argued after that. They opened the Void and pushed her in.
Su Ning expected darkness. Instead, she felt herself falling through light, spinning through colors she had no name for, until everything turned black.
When she opened her eyes again, she found herself inside a luxurious room, strange.
This place looks like the mortal world, was I banished here or giving a second chance to live better?
She slowly walked around the room with practiced grace and suddenly halted, took two step back and stared into the mirror. Her eyes widened. What the hell? She touched her face and paused, then turned her head to look at the large painting in the room.
The painting's face was gone, leaving only the whole body in the portrait.
I transmigrated into a face?
She stared back at the face and sighed. I'm the most powerful princess of the Ninth Palace, just a mortal, there is absolutely nothing I, Su Ning doesn't have a knowledge of.
She shut her eyes and the memories came into her mind one after another, for several minutes and paused. She slowly opened her eyes and her eyeballs glowed slightly.
Mo Xue, born into a poor family, married to Gu Chen to repay a family debt, pampered by her husband, yet she went ahead, cheating on him with countless men outside, and didn't even bother to hide it. She even dares to support young men outside, with her husband's money. Recently had a terrible accident and died yesterday?
Just f*****g kill me! I just got banished for killing a cheater and now I'm wearing a cheater's face?
She sat down angrily, luckily I didn't inherit her disgusting body. She thought. How could her husband still... HUSBAND. Wait, so I'm now a married woman?
In three hundred years of her life, she never wanted one. Romance always seemed like something foolish that her sisters and other people chased. But now, as a mortal, she felt an odd little spark of curiosity.
She walked out and looked around the house, mortal world, she never imagined she would also experience been a mortal. She got to the master bedroom and pushed the door open quietly.
Gu Chen was asleep on his bed. Dark hair. Sharp jaw. Broad shoulders even in sleep.
She bite her lips. What a handsome perfect man! My sisters always grinned like fools when they see a handsome guy, now I understand the feeling.
"Well," she said to herself, smiling. "since fate has already given me a husband, I might as well explore."
She climbed beside him, But Gu Chen was so tired, he didn't wake up.
She wrapped her arms around him and pressed closer, resting her head on his chest, the way she imagined a loving wife would.
Gu Chen shifted slightly but did not wake up. Su Ning closed her eyes, and let sleep pull her in.
Morning light crept through the curtains.
Gu Chen woke up slowly, his mind foggy with sleep. Then he felt something warm pressing against his side. Someone hugging him.
He froze. Then turned his head, and his heart nearly stopped beating.
Mo Xue was lying beside him, arms wrapped around him, smiling peacefully in her sleep. The same face he watched several times before she was buried yesterday.
"Mo... Xue?"
Her eyes fluttered open. She looked at him and slowly sat up, still a bit sleepy.
"Hubby, you're awake." she said.
Gu Chen's face darkened. Was he hallucinating? His dead wife was in his bed. Smiling. And calling him hubby?
Ghost!
