I snuck quietly into the library, looking for a place to be alone to think. The smell of old books really did wonders to my senses, and I reveled in it. Nikolai was coming to pick me up in a few hours to meet up with Elena and Keith. I was a bundle of nerves, just thinking about it. I still had it in mind that my father was going to find me, sooner or later. I just hoped it was later. I closed the door behind me and let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
I had seen it in his eyes the moment the words had left my mouth. Nikolai had known I was lying. But even as I had so desperately wanted to take my words back, I had known it was impossible. The words were already out, and the lie was actually needed.
If need be, I was going to apologize to him in the future.
