Chapter 1: A New Beginning
“Sir! Can you please move now? There’s a line behind you!”
Daryl Grey blinked at the agitated voice of a woman in front of him. She was almost glaring at him from behind a glass window.
“Move, bro! We want to see our results too!” a man behind him added impatiently.
Daryl turned, still confused. A long line had formed behind him, and they were all glaring at him.
“I-I’m sorry,” he muttered before stepping aside.
What is happening? Where am I?
He looked around, finally realizing that he was inside a university. Students and adults rushed past him, anxiously checking the board or heading to the registrar’s office—waiting for the results of their medical licensure exam.
Daryl gulped. It can’t be… I shouldn’t be here.
The last memory he had was standing at the top of his wife’s building, ready to take his own life. After years of humiliation and torment at the hands of her family—the Williams family—he had finally reached his limit. They had imposed impossible conditions on him, stripped him of everything he had worked for, and used him until there was nothing left.
And since they had no children, Daryl hadn’t thought twice about ending his suffering rather than enduring more heartbreak at their hands.
Daryl Grey had come from a poor family. But through sheer intelligence and determination, he had risen to the top. Yet, even with all his achievements, the Williams family never accepted him. Instead, they took everything he had built and used it for their own gain.
But that had all happened five years later—five years after he took this exam, before he became entangled with that wretched family.
Did I go back in time?
There was only one way to find out.
Daryl left the university, gripping his test results tightly.
A taxi dropped him off in front of the Williams family manor. The towering gates and high walls screamed of wealth and power.
The Williams family wasn’t just the richest in Astrendele City; its head, Robert Williams, was also the city’s mayor. Marrying into their family wasn’t easy—it had been nothing more than a lucky bet that had led to his engagement with Robert’s only daughter, Samantha Williams.
Daryl entered the grand mansion and waited in the drawing room. If his memory was correct, this was the exact moment when he had first come here after passing his exam. He had wanted to show Robert his results and officially ask for Samantha’s hand in marriage.
Robert Williams had been his benefactor, providing him with a scholarship. Daryl and Samantha had met in college, where she had been the most beautiful and kindest woman he had ever known. She had accepted him despite his poor background.
But when her family discovered their relationship, they did everything in their power to separate them. Robert had even threatened to revoke Daryl’s scholarship if he didn’t leave Samantha.
Desperate, they had made a bet—if Daryl failed the medical licensure exam, he would let go of Samantha. But if he passed, Robert had to allow him to marry her.
Robert had agreed, confident that Daryl would fail.
It wasn’t long before Robert stormed into the drawing room, furious.
“How dare you show your face here?!” he bellowed as soon as he saw Daryl sitting on the couch.
Daryl swallowed hard. The exact same words. The same furious expression.
It was terrifying—and yet, it amazed him.
“M-Mr. Williams. I came here to show you something.”
Robert scowled, his gaze dropping to the paper in Daryl’s hands. He snatched it aggressively and scanned the contents. His eyes widened slightly, but he quickly masked his shock.
“And so? For all I know, you cheated on this exam! Why are you showing me this?!”
Daryl fell silent. It was happening again. The same humiliating words. The same dismissal of his hard work.
The same cycle.
But this time, he remembered everything.
His fists clenched. The humiliation and torment he had suffered at the hands of this family burned inside him. He had been given a second chance. He wouldn’t waste it.
Everyone in Astrendele believed the Williams family was kind and generous, but Daryl knew better. They were nothing but vultures who preyed on the weak.
He stared directly into Robert’s eyes. In his past life, he would have been trembling in fear. After all, Robert was still a powerful man—the city’s mayor, the wealthiest figure in Astrendele. He could destroy a man like Daryl with a single word.
But not anymore.
“I just want to remind you of our bet, Mr. Williams. I hope you haven’t forgotten it.”
Robert scowled. “What bet? Why would I make a bet with someone like you? You are nothing! Have you forgotten who I am?”
Daryl smirked. “I could never forget, Mr. Williams. But let me remind you—you made a bet with me five months ago. You said that if I passed the exam, you would let me marry Samantha.”
Robert stiffened, looking away. He was a man of his word, and if he had truly made such a bet, he would have no choice but to honor it. He wasn’t the type to back down easily.
Then, after a moment, he scoffed. “I would never make such a bet.”
“Oh, but you did, Mr. Williams. You promised me in front of your family.” Daryl’s voice was firm. “But it’s fine. I still love your daughter. I don’t dislike your family, but I won’t force you into accepting our marriage just yet.”
“What did you just say?! Are you calling me a liar?!” Robert exploded. His face twisted in rage. “Yes! Now that you mention it, I do remember our bet! But I don’t believe you passed! This exam has a mere 20% pass rate! And I know you could never have done it!”
“You know very well that I could, Mr. Williams. I was one of your scholars, after all.”
Robert’s frustration deepened. Daryl had a point. But there was no way he would allow someone like him to marry Samantha. And the arrogance in his tone only infuriated him further.
“You think you’re important now just because you passed this exam?” Robert sneered. “Let me tell you something, Daryl Grey—you will never be part of this family! I’ll have your results investigated. You must have cheated!”
Daryl chuckled. “Go ahead, Mr. Williams. Do whatever you like. But let me tell you something—one day, you will regret everything you did to me and my family. You will watch as I rise. And when I get to the top? You will be the one begging for me.”
Robert’s eyes widened. “What?! How dare you?! Apologize this instant!”
But Daryl didn’t flinch. He stood up and stormed out of the room without a word, not even glancing back as Robert continued yelling after him.
As he stepped outside, his eyes met two familiar figures—Samantha and Carmen Williams.
Carmen looked as furious as Robert. But Samantha… her eyes were filled with shock and concern.
Daryl sighed and walked away.
He didn’t know who had given him this second chance, but he would make sure to use it well. This time, he wouldn’t be naive.
This time, he would make the people who wronged him fall.
Inside, Samantha and Carmen entered the drawing room.
Carmen scoffed. “Did he really just say that?”
Robert sat down, massaging his temple. “Yes. And he’s claiming that he passed the exam.”
Carmen grabbed the test paper. Her eyes widened. “I-It’s real… He got a perfect score!”
Robert gritted his teeth. “This isn’t right. I won’t accept this humiliation!”
Samantha frowned. “What are you going to do, Dad?”
“I’m calling the state health department.” Robert’s expression darkened. “I’ll prove that Daryl Grey cheated.”
