Chapter Nine: The Fall of the Shadow

436 Words
The Chairman faced a reality he hadn't encountered in thirty years as he stood in front of the enormous map inside Syndicate headquarters: vast portions of the city were no longer under his authority. Marian's black markers have gradually taken the place of the red ones that represented his area. Until it became absolute, the shift had been so subtle that it had gone mostly overlooked. Silently entering, Solomon observed that the city was evolving. The Chairman concurred, adding that the man behind it was also evolving—Marian was thinking more like a dictator than a simple crook. Kade assembled around a hundred district leaders from all over the city in a large warehouse. The mob was made up of independent kingpins and former Syndicate followers who now shared a common name. Kade revealed his face to his commanders for the first time when he moved forward without a mask or disguise. People's reactions to how young he really was caused whispers to spread across the room. Kade drew a clear distinction between his rule and the old guard after waiting for the whispers to subside. He clarified that his group would rule by opportunity, whereas the Syndicate ruled by terror. But a terrifying warning hardened his voice: betraying the family would result in complete banishment from the city. Nobody dared to question him; Drex's terrible destiny loomed large in everyone's thoughts. Amara showed up at the warehouse later that night, feeling quite uneasy about his choice to go public. She forewarned Kade that her father would eventually learn of it and pursue him directly. Marian could no longer afford to stay a ghost, Kade stated, remaining unfazed and grinning. The extent of Kade's impact became evident outside. Dealers, captains, smugglers, and enforcers who had completely left the Syndicate to follow a legend had gathered on the streets below in their thousands. Kade went out into the light and onto the balcony when Juno indicated they were ready. A single name, "MARIAN!" was yelled as the crowd exploded and their voices blended into a thunderous boom. However, there was a concealed threat in the moment of victory. A covert observer dropped a pair of binoculars and dialed a secure line from a far-off, shadowy rooftop. The source provided an important piece of information when the Chairman responded, saying, "We finally have his face." A serene smile grew across the Chairman's face as he briefly closed his eyes. There was a long pause before he gave the last order to get the city ready. The real conflict was about to start; the shadow-boxing era was ended.
