Chapter Eight: The Lion’s Den

285 Words
The Chairman's compound was not hidden. It did not need to be. Power like his did not rely on secrecy. It depended on certainty. ⸻ Kade walked in alone. There's no backup. There are no visible weapons. ⸻ But he was not unarmed. Not really. ⸻ The environment inside was under control. Guards are everywhere. Eyes are watching. Guns are ready. ⸻ And, at the heart of it all— The Chairman.❻ Amara was also there. Bound. But unbroken. ❻ From the moment Kade walked in, her gaze was drawn to him. And at that instant— Everything unspoken went between them. You ought not to have arrived. ⸻ I had to. ⸻ The Chairman gave a little smile. "Love," he said. "A predictable flaw." ⸻ Kade kept his gaze fixed on him. "Release her." ⸻ The Chairman laughed. "You have no authority to make demands." ⸻ A pause. Next— "But..." ⸻ He made a small gesture. Amara was hauled to her feet. ⸻ He went on, "I am curious." "Why do you think you can take my place?" ⸻ Kade moved to the front. "Because you're losing control already." ⸻ A flicker. tiny. But genuine. ⸻ The Chairman also observed it. ⸻ "Belief," he declared. "Excellent." A rhythm. "Good, but misplaced." Kade stopped a few feet away. “You built something powerful,” he said. “But you stopped evolving.” Silence stretched. “And now,” Kade continued, “it’s collapsing.” The Chairman studied him. Then— He laughed. Not loud. Not wild. Just… amused. “You think this is collapse?” A pause. “This…” He gestured around them. “Is control.” And then— Everything moved.
