Nice to See You Again

“Are you okay? Your mind seems to be so occupied.” They were on their way to her penthouse when Albert noticed her silence. “Yes, of course I’m okay. I’m just tired, I guess.” She said while massaging her temple with her right hand. She would never dare tell him that she had seen and talked to Kai Stevens. Albert hated the man. “Make sure to take a long rest when we get home. I suddenly feel bad that I need to leave you tonight.” She reached out to his hand that was on his car’s gear and held it for a second. “I’m okay, love. Thank you for being with me tonight. Don’t worry about me. I’ll just take a rest the whole day tomorrow. Give my regards to Uncle and Aunt, okay?” “They’re asking if you’ll be with us tomorrow but I told them you need to rest.” The Zorel family had always liked her. “I’ll surely visit them as soon as possible.” Albert’s parents had never asked if their son was still in a relationship with her. She felt relieved with that because she wouldn’t want to lie to them. When they arrived at her penthouse and said their goodbyes, she went to her room and laid on her bed. She closed her eyes and tried to erase her thoughts about Kai Stevens. But failed. She thought she was ready to face him but he caught her off guard. She didn’t expect to see him right away. But she was still feeling proud of herself because she was able to maintain her composure despite his nearness. She succeeded not to reflect any emotions on her face. She saw how he was keen in studying her face, as if he was waiting for it to send him clues as to what she was feeling. She promised herself that she was done feeling any kind of pain from Kai Stevens. The Emily Fort before was long gone already. She was done believing that true love existed. She was done believing that love could ease the pain away. She was done believing that Kai Stevens and Emily Fort were meant for each other. She was done. ** “We are so proud of you, little sister!” Almira and Amelia exclaimed when they saw her. The sisters tightly hugged each other.  They were at the living room, waiting for their father to join them. Emily was beaming with happiness. She could really see that they were proud of her. She was also happy seeing them. Almira, her newly divorced sister, looked genuinely happy with her life. Divorcing Jacob must have really been a good decision done by her sister. Amelia was 5 months pregnant and they were all excited to see their nephew. Philip could not join them because he had to attend to an emergency in the hospital. Looking at Amelia's tummy made her think about her baby. If only... She shook her head a little and hurriedly erased the thought. Sadness had no room tonight. Emily also felt nervous. This was going to be the first time she was going to see her father again. She didn’t know what to expect. Then she heard their father going down the stairs. The sisters stood and the other two gleefully greeted their father. Emily just stood and gave a shy smile at her father. “Father,” she said when William looked at her. “You’re back.” William did not go near her and was just staring at her. She nodded. ““Yes, Father.” “How was the ball? Did you enjoy it?” This was the first time her father actually asked those questions to her. “Yes, Father. I’ve met a lot of our family’s friends. They were all looking for you.” “Well, you being there was enough.” There was a moment of silence. Amelia and Almira felt awkward, and hopeful at the same time. They could see that their father was trying to somehow reach out to Emily. Amelia clapped her hands. They turned their eyes on her. ““Well, what are we waiting for? I’m starving! Let’s go!” She put her hand on her father’s arm and made their way to the dinner table. Almira and Emily followed behind, all along Almira was giving Emily a thumbs up. Their cook prepared a lot and Emily noticed that most of the dishes were her favorites. It was indeed a sumptuous meal! She knew she would never forget this night because this was the very first time that she and her family had dinner while talking about a lot of things. She also noticed how her father would always look at her: his expression was different from how he used to look at her. Was it because she won the Businesswoman of the Year Award? She suddenly felt sad about that thought. She wanted her father to accept her and love her for the simple reason that she was his daughter, and not because she brought home achievements. “How long will you stay here?” her father suddenly asked. “I hope you stay longer, Sis.” Amelia said. “I’m not sure. Brother Marcus says I can stay longer but I’m thinking of just staying for one more week.” She was looking at her father and her sisters as she answered. “We should also encourage our dear brother to take a break. It’s quite disappointing that he’s not able to join us today. Come on, lil sis. You can stay longer than that. Didn’t you miss this place?” Amelia wanted Emily to take a vacation since she heard from Marcus how Emily had worked so hard for the past 4 years. “Think it over, Emily. I want you to stay longer. A businesswoman who works hard also deserves to take a break.” They were both shocked when they heard their father say those words. He recognized Emily’s hard work! Emily felt like crying. Finally, her father acknowledged her work! “Stay for the night. It’s already late. I’ve asked the maids to clean your room.” Emily was astonished. Her father might have changed a little on how he treated her but his being bossy remained the same.
