My Alpha, Kane Volkov, shirt unbuttoned, pinned me firmly beneath him. His searing chest pressed against my heaving breaths, and through the thin nightgown, it rubbed slowly, again and again, over my swollen pregnant belly.

His left hand teased faintly at my chest while his right hand trailed downward along the curve of my abdomen. Just as he was about to cross that final barrier, a gush of heat surged forth without warning. Amniotic fluid soaked through my nightgown in an instant and dampened his shirt as well.

Kane, who had been pressing down on me, demanding kisses only a second ago, went deathly pale. He didn't even bother to button up — he grabbed his coat, wrapped it around me, carried me barefoot off the bed, and barked at the driver to ready the car for the hospital.

I thought he would stay with me to welcome our child. But instead, he carried me into a Moonrest Med-Pod — one with no delivery bed.

Cold restraints snapped around my wrists. A wolfsbane injection to suppress contractions pierced my vein. I screamed in agony, but Kane leaned down to brush away my tears, his voice soft and tender. "The child in Selena's womb must be born first — must complete the First Howl first — before he can become my heir. Evelyn, you already have my love. Selena has nothing left but this child. Let her have this one."

With that, he severed our private mental bond, turned away, and ordered the doctor. "Without my command, she is not to give birth."

Much later, as he held Selena's newborn — the one that had just completed its First Howl — he finally remembered me. But the Beta who came to report was drenched in blood. "Alpha... the Madam and the baby... neither made it."

Much later, as he held Selena's newborn — the one that had just completed its First Howl — he finally remembered me. But the Beta who came to report was drenched in blood. "Alpha... the Madam and the baby... neither made it." Evelyn's POV: After Kane left, I ripped the IV out of the back of my hand. Before the bead of blood from the needle could even hit the ground, two nurses lunged at me, pinning my wrists down with all their strength. "Let go of me! I need to get to the OR!" Their faces were pale, but their grip didn't loosen. The Alpha's command still hung heavy over the entire medical wing. Even though they could see I was bleeding, they didn't dare defy Kane. A fresh dose of wolfsbane solution was pushed back into my vein. The contractions that had already begun and the drugs forcibly suppressing labor tore at me from inside, and my vision kept going black in waves. Kane's coat was still draped over my legs. It still carried the scent of cedar and fir — the sense of security my inner wolf knew best. But deep in my consciousness, it paced restlessly, searching for its fated mate, as if unable to understand why the one who should protect us had become the one who locked us in. I grabbed the coat and hurled it onto the floor. The next second, the fetal monitor let out a shrill alarm. The fetal heart rate plummeted from one hundred and forty to one hundred and eight. The nurses scrambled to check the equipment, while I fought through the agony to reach for the phone on the bedside table. The screen still lit up, but calls and network access had all been frozen by an admin account. The private mental bond was equally silent. My hand flew to my neck—and found only bare skin. The moonstone I'd taken off before the shower was still in the box by the bedside in the packhouse. My water had broken so suddenly that Kane had swept me up and carried me out before I could grab it. It was the distress signal my father had left me—if I smeared my blood on it, he would be able to find me. I caught the sleeve of the young nurse who leaned in to wipe the blood off me. "Please—go to the packhouse and get the moonstone in the bedside box. It's a family heirloom that can summon someone to help me." Her eyes darted toward the door. "But the Alpha has forbidden us from leaving—" I couldn't pull out the IV, so I dug my nails into my palm and smeared the blood onto the gauze in her hand. "This is my blood. Once you get it, rub it on the stone. You don't have to bring it back. Please—save my baby." She glanced at the monitor, bit her lip, and closed her fingers around the gauze. "I'll go get the spare medication." She kept her head down and wheeled the cart out. Suddenly, the sound of a lock disengaging came from outside the door. "Kane!" I didn't care about dignity anymore — I braced myself against the pod wall and pushed myself upright. But the person who walked in was his sister, Vera. She was still wearing the silver gown from the First Howl ceremony. Clad in that silver gown from Moonstone Hall, she froze for a moment when she saw me curled up pathetically in the pod, then her face twisted with undisguised disgust. "There you go, putting on a show again." "Vera, please call the doctor. I'm really going into labor." She glanced around the room. "Aren't there doctors standing right here? My brother gave you the best med-pod in all of Frostspine. What more could you possibly want?" I pointed at the steadily dropping fetal heart rate numbers. "The baby can't hold on much longer. Let me out, and I'll sign a relinquishment waiver. The succession rights to Frostspine, the territory, the assets — I don't want any of it." Vera let out a scornful laugh. "A low-ranking she-wolf from a rescue shelter — you really think you're in any position to negotiate?" She leaned in close to the pod door and spoke slowly, enunciating every word. "My brother specifically told me: the harder you cry, the more I must not open the door. You've always been good at using this pitiful act to soften him up." Suddenly, another wave of pressure dropped through my abdomen. I cried out involuntarily, and Vera's expression finally shifted. The number on the monitor dropped to ninety-seven. "She can't actually be in trouble, can she..." She pulled out her phone and video-called Kane. The moment the screen connected, I heard Kane's voice. "How is she?" Those three words alone were enough to make my tears spill out of control. "Kane, save our baby. I'll take the baby and leave Frostspine forever. Just please let me give birth first." There were a few seconds of silence on the other end. I heard him lower his voice and command: "Stop the medication first, take her—" Selena's fragile voice cut in. "Kane, don't worry about me. Go be with Evelyn. Even if this baby can't complete the First Howl, Lucian wouldn't blame you." As she finished speaking, she let out a suppressed cry of pain. Someone nearby reported anxiously that the pureblood pup had entered the final stage of labor, and the entire Traditionalist Faction was waiting in Moonstone Hall. If Kane left now, it would mean he had abandoned his late brother's bloodline. Kane's voice, which had just softened, turned cold again. "Maintain the original plan. Evelyn, don't make me choose between you and the entire pack." He ended the video call himself.
