C001: ESCAPE
Soft feet hit the floor, as Melissa ran hastily. She didn’t dare to look behind her as she ran through the woods, not daring to turn back to see if she was being followed or not.
A marriage?
To a man she barely knows?
She scoffed as she got to the foot of a huge tree and stopped to catch her breath. She had no idea how long she’d been running now.
The memories of that morning came rushing back.
“Good morning mom.” She'd greeted, quietly at breakfast, completely oblivious to that fact that her day was about to go horribly wrong. “You look happy. What's the occasion?” She'd asked, glancing at her father who was talking on the phone to God knows who.
“Your dad has some good news to share with you and it's something we've all been waiting for,” her mom, Carlotta, answered.
Melissa furrowed her brows. ‘What could it be?’ she wondered as she ate her breakfast, impatiently waiting for her father to finish with his call.
Finally, he dropped the phone. “I see you're down, Melissa,” Vanda, her father said, cutting into his meat.
“What was that call about, dad?” She asked immediately.
“Impatient as always, Spitfire,” her father said raising his brow. “The call was about your suitor. I've found a suitable man to marry you.” He dropped the bombshell casually.
Melissa’s fork fell from her hand. “What!?”
“You heard me right. He’ll be here in a few days so get ready to go with him,” he said blandly.
Her stomach dropped. “But dad I haven't transformed yet and I still don't know who my mate is. I thought this is a wolf thing, ending up with your mate.”
Vanda scoffed, wiping the side of his lips. “You have just a few days and hours to get yourself prepared, I do not want tardiness.” He carried on with his food like nothing had happened while Carlotta smiled with self-satisfaction.
Melissa jumped to her feet, tears shining in her eyes. “You both suck!” She screamed and bolted up the stairs.
As she walked into her bedroom, her eyes took in the pretty atmosphere in it.
In just one week’s time, she was slated to turn eighteen and find her mate. Just one week! They couldn’t even wait that long?
“A marriage?” She asked herself lowly, shaking her head. “Despicable.”
After breakfast , she snuck down the stairs to her father’s office and pressed her ear on the door. She didn't care if he'd sense her due to his high alertiveness as a werewolf and a powerful alpha.
“Marrying her off to Alpha Alden is our last option to retaining power in this present time when rogues roam the woods. The crimson moon pack is the most powerful pack around.”
“I agree.” Carlotta concurred.
Melissa shut her eyes painfully. They were marrying her off because of power? She sighed and moved away from the door.
But suddenly a voice rang out in her mind. “You can flee now. No one will know.”
She nearly jumped out of her skin. She looked around but there was no one there. The voice had come from within her.
She jerked a glance at the shut door, praying that they didn’t hear her. She ran up to her bedroom. By the time she crashed onto the bed, she was utterly convinced about running away.
She snuck out that same night, and here she was now. She let herself look around the environment, finally she noticed she’d finally made it out of Moonlight pack territory.
The air was still and cold. She shivered, tightening her hand around herself. There was something really creepy about this place and she smelt danger.
'Where exactly am I?’ she cried internally, turning slowly. Her eyes suddenly clashed with a monstrous sight. She screamed, ducking down as a giant wolf head jumped at her all of a sudden.
Her heart pounded in her chest. She waited for it to bite her but it didn’t move. She gasped as she realized that it was a statue. She cursed under her breath. It looked so real!
Fear of an imminent danger washed over her. There was something really wrong with this place. She needed to get away. Now.
“To whom do we owe this pleasant surprise?” A deep baritone voice boomed behind her before she could take a step.
Melissa let out a tiny scream and froze, completely rooted to her spot.
“Turn around. Slowly,” the voice boomed again.
Melissa began to turn slowly, her legs shaking under her.
A huge man stood before her, towering over her. His facial features were so pronounced and his skin so pale that she wondered if he was sick.
“For the record I'm not sick,” he snapped.
Melissa gasped. He just read her thoughts! He definitely wasn’t a human.
“I asked you a question. Who are you and what are you doing on this land?” He asked as two other guys appeared out of nowhere and flanked him in both sides.
“I see we have an intruder, Beta Allan,” one of them muttered.
“Yes, an intruder who thinks I'm sick,” he answered.
Melissa felt her fear roll away, replaced by the hot-headed anger she was known for. “I’m standing right here, you know!” She snapped.
The first man looked shocked at her outburst but recovered quickly. “She is not human,” he snarled. “She must be a werewolf. Bundle her up. The alpha has to see what we've caught.”
“What do you mean your alpha has to see what you've caught?” She snapped back.
“I'm not a commodity you can lug around.”
He ignored her completely. His hand flew out suddenly. Next thing she knew, she was upside down on his shoulder.
Melissa screamed bloody murder. “Let me down, you giant oaf!” She screamed, banging against his back but he wasn’t fazed. “What kind of barbaric attitude is this?”
“Barbaric? You’re the one who trespassed into the territory of another person. You must be a spy. You will be tried and if found guilty, sentenced to death in the forbidden den.”
She furrowed her brows as the sentinels with him laughed hard. “Forbidden den? Let me go right now! When my father finds out I'm missing and comes for me, you'll regret doing this.”
“Your father?” A deeper voice calmly echoed behind them. Melissa froze. Even the giant carried her seemed to tense a little in the presence of this newcomer. Suddenly, all the protests died in her throat.
“Take her to the dungeon while she awaits my judgement,” he ordered, his voice icy cold with raw power.
But his words jerked her back to life. “Wait, what!? Dungeon? No! You dare not! I’m not fit for—”
“Allan, now!” he barked.
