Chapter 3 Behind Closes Doors

1073 Words
The tray in her hands feels heavier with every step, even though it’s just a bottle of wine and a single glass. Her heart refuses to calm down. Room 1208. She stops in front of the door. For a moment, she just stands there, staring at the number. This is a mistake. Everything inside her is telling her to turn around, to go back downstairs and pretend this never happened. But reality quickly settles in. She needs this job. She exhales slowly, trying to steady herself, and lifts her hand to knock. Three soft knocks. Silence. Then “Come in.” His voice. Low, calm and certain. Her fingers tighten slightly around the tray as she hesitates. The door isn’t locked. That realization makes her even more uneasy. Still, she pushes it open. --- The room is dimly lit, shadows stretching across expensive furniture and polished floors. The curtains are slightly drawn, letting in faint city lights that flicker across the walls. And there he is. Adrian Cole. Standing near the window, just like the first night she saw him. He doesn’t turn immediately. As if he already knows it’s her. Liana steps inside cautiously, her eyes scanning the room before settling on him again. “I… I brought your wine,” she says softly. Her voice feels too loud in the silence. Adrian turns slowly. His gaze finds hers instantly. And just like before Everything else fades. --- “Close the door.” The words are simple. But they carry weight. Liana hesitates. Her grip on the tray tightens slightly. “Is that necessary?” she asks, trying to keep her voice steady. Adrian tilts his head slightly, studying her. Then, without breaking eye contact, he walks toward the door himself. And shuts it. The soft click echoes through the room. Liana’s breath catches. --- “Put it down,” he says, nodding toward the table. She moves quickly, almost too quickly, placing the tray down with careful precision. “There,” she says, stepping back immediately. Creating distance. Always distance. Adrian notices. He notices everything. --- For a moment, neither of them speaks. The tension in the room builds, thick and suffocating. Liana can feel it pressing against her chest, making it hard to breathe. “I should go,” she says suddenly, turning slightly toward the door. But “You’re always in a hurry around me.” She freezes. Slowly, she turns back to face him. “I’m just doing my job sir ,” she replies. Adrian takes a step closer. Then another. “Is that all this is to you?” he asks, his voice quieter now. Her heart pounds harder as the distance between them shrinks. “I don’t know what you mean,” she says quickly. Another step. Now he’s too close. Too close for comfort. --- “You feel it,” Adrian says, his eyes locked on hers. Her breath hitches. “Feel what?” she whispers. “This” he replies simply. His eyes locked on hers, he gently moves his hands towards her face caressing her face. Her heart pounds fast, so fast as it have never been in her life. The word lingers between them. Unspoken tension. Unanswered questions. Something neither of them fully understands. --- Liana shakes her head slightly, taking a step back. But the edge of the bed stops her. She didn’t realize how far she’d moved. Or how close he’d brought her. “You’re mistaken,” she says, though her voice lacks confidence. Adrian studies her for a moment. Then He steps back. Just enough to give her space. The shift is subtle, but it changes everything. --- “I’m not going to hurt you.” The words are unexpected. And for the first time since she entered the room Liana pauses. She searches his face, looking for something anything that proves he’s lying. But she doesn’t find it. What she finds instead… is control and restraint. Something she didn’t expect from a man like him. --- “Then why am I here?” she asks quietly. Adrian glances toward the wine, then back at her. “Because I wanted to talk to you without distractions.” Her brows knit slightly. “Talk?” A faint smirk touches his lips. “You seem disappointed.” “I’m confused,” she corrects. --- Adrian walks to the table, pouring himself a glass of wine. His movements are slow, deliberate. Controlled. Everything about him is controlled. He takes a sip, then looks at her again. “You avoid me,” he says. Liana crosses her arms slightly, more out of instinct than defiance. “You stare at me,” she replies. --- The tension shifts again. Softer now. Less threatening. But still… intense. --- “I’ll leave if you want me to,” Adrian says suddenly. The offer catches her off guard. “You would?” she asks. “Yes.” Just one word. Simple. Certain. --- Liana doesn’t respond immediately. Because now… she has a choice. And somehow, that feels even more overwhelming than before. --- “I don’t understand you,” she admits quietly. Adrian’s expression doesn’t change, but something in his eyes softens, just slightly. “You don’t have to.” Another silence. But this one is different. Less suffocating. More… uncertain. “I want to go,” Liana says , but this time her voice is calmer. Adrian nods. He doesn’t stop her. Doesn’t move toward her. Doesn’t block her path. He simply watches as she walks to the door. --- Her hand rests on the handle. But she doesn’t open it immediately. Instead, she glances back at him. Just once. And when their eyes meet That feeling returns and she felt a wave of heat spread through her body. Stronger than before. --- Then she leaves. The door closes softly behind her. --- Adrian exhales slowly, running his hand through his hair. That didn’t go as planned. Not at all. But somehow… It feels better than anything he expected. Down the hallway, Liana leans against the wall, her heart racing and his words sinking into her mind . She presses a hand against her chest, trying to steady her breathing. What just happened? That wasn’t what she thought it would be. Not even close. And that’s what scares her the most. Because now… She’s not sure if she wants to stay away from him. -
