I’m Getting Married, Robert.
Amelia’s POV I froze outside Damien’s office. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Through the half-opened door, I saw my own husband passionately kissing another woman against his desk with his shirt partially unbuttoned and her clothes disheveled. Then she turned around and my heart stopped. It was Clara Bennett. My former best friend. “No, this can’t be.” I whispered. My husband was cheating on me with the woman I once trusted most. *Two years earlier “I’m sorry, what?” My father’s expression didn’t change at all. “You heard me, Amelia.” I stared at him across his enormous wooden desk. “You want me to marry Damien Valenti, a man I’ve never met before?” “You will meet him soon.” A nervous laugh escaped my lips “This isn’t funny, Dad.” “I’m not joking.” he replied instantly with a serious tone. My smile disappeared. My mother sat silently beside him with her hands placed on her lap. I looked between them. “This can’t be real.” “We’ve already discussed the arrangements with the Valentis.” My father said. “The wedding will take place within four weeks.” My heart started pounding. “Four weeks?!” “That’s right.” I pushed myself away from the chair. “NO!” I shook my head. “I will not marry him.” My father narrowed his eyes. “This isn’t a request, Amelia.” “You can’t make me marry a man I don’t love.” I replied him sternly “We are not asking you to love him.” My father’s words hit me harder than I expected. “So you are asking me to spend the rest of my life with a man I barely know?” “No, I am asking you to protect this family and everything we’ve built.” There it was. The Cruz family. The company. Their image. Everything mattered except what I wanted. My mother finally spoke. “Amelia, the Valenti family has agreed to merge several of their businesses with ours. This marriage will secure the future of both families for generations.” I laughed. “So I’m just a mere business deal? Is that it?” “No.” She replied quickly. “Then what am I?” None of them could answer. I felt tears burning behind my eyes, ready to pour out. “I already have someone.” My father sighed. “Robert?” Hearing his name made my heart skip a beat. “Yes, Robert.” “How many times do I have to tell you, he isn’t suitable for you.” “But I love him, Dad.” “Love won’t give you a wealthy future. You have to understand this, Amelia.” I grabbed my purse from the chair. “I won’t do this.” My father stood. “If you walk out, you are walking away from everything we’ve built for you.” I stopped. He continued speaking. “Think carefully before you throw away your future for a man you met in college who has nothing to offer.” I turned slowly. “I can see you’ve made your decision, Good.” A smile crept around my father’s lips. “We meet the Valentis tonight, they will be joining us for dinner.” He said. “Make sure to look your best.” I looked at my parent with disbelief. They already had everything planned out. My wedding, my future and even my entire life without asking me. I stormed out of the room before they could see me cry. By the time I reached Melissa’s apartment, I was barely holding myself together. She opened the door with a cheerful smile on her face. “Amelia! I was wondering where…” “I’m marrying Damien Valenti.” Her smile Vanished. “Wait, what?” “My parents arranged it.” She stared at me, shocked. “Are you serious?” I nodded. “In four weeks…” “Then tell them you don’t want to.” “It’s not that easy Mel, I tried…” “Oh you poor thing, come here.” She pulled me in for a tight hug and I finally poured out the tears I’ve been withholding. “I love Robert, Mel.” I said shakily. “I know, I know.” “They said the marriage will protect the company.” She frowned. “This isn’t fair.” I took a deep breath and wiped my eyes. “I just wished my parents would let me live my life for myself and not them.” My phone suddenly rang. I removed it from my purse and looked at the screen. My heart stopped. Robert. Melissa saw his name on my screen. “Answer it.” “And tell him what?” “The truth.” I sighed. The phone kept ringing so I finally answered. “Hello?” “Amelia, darling you there?” His voice nearly broke me, but I forced myself to remain stable. “Yes, It’s me.” “You sound strange, are you okay?” I looked at Melissa, she gave me a soft smile and a nod. “Robert, we need to talk.” “About what?” I swallowed hard. “I can’t do this over the phone.” “Then I’ll come to you.” “No! don’t.” “Why?” Because I knew that If I saw him, I wouldn’t be strong enough to leave him. My voice trembled. “Because tonight, everything is going to change.” “I don’t understand, Amelia.” His voice was more firm. “Are you breaking up with me?” Tears slipped down my cheeks, I was about to lose the only man I ever loved. “I’m getting married, Robert.”
