Chapter 7

WREN'S POV WE stopped in front of the wooden house just a meter away. I then glimpsed at Vhonn who seemed just relaxed in holding my hand. I wondered why he was doing this. And I wondered to myself as to why I let him hold my hand. We were not close or even friends. We just knew our names. It was not deniable that he undoubtedly looked so attractive. Is he thinking that I must love holding hands with him because I did not protest? That thought made me embarrassed again. Though his warm hand felt great with my hand, this should not be allowed. "Uhm, can I take my hand now?" I asked him because he looked like he did not have thought of letting my hand go. "Oh, sorry," he chuckled and then detached our hands. I opened my bag to get the keys. I was having a hard time groping for it with my hand, so I eyed the inside of my bag. "Oh, where is it now? I'm sure I shoved it in," I murmured, but it looked like he has heard it. "Maybe you left it and thought you've brought it with you," I heard him say. "No, I brought it with me," I said, and not so long ago, I sighed in relief when I got to find it. "There you are." I closed the bag's zipper and headed to the door to inject the key into the doorknob. It didn't fit, so I tried the other one, and gladly, it fitted. Then I twiddled the doorknob, and the door made a cracking sound as I pushed open it. I didn't come in yet, but it was a bit dark inside, and I thought it was dusty. I peeked over my shoulder to see Vhonn. He was still standing behind me, then flickered a smile. "Can I come in too?" he asked me. I was about to agree when I remembered something. I examined Vhonn again from head to toe, and I was not sure if he could go inside. It was oblivious that he came from a wealthy family. He was neat and prosperous, and the inside of the house was for sure untidy since the outside had plants climbing on it. The house didn't have to be entered by him. He didn't belong here. But I was taken aback when he came closer to me. Only then did I realize that he had just widened the space by opening the door more. Then he entered first without any cue and any problem. I came in next and went over to the couch to put my bag. "Looks like you should do the general cleaning. You have loads of things to do," Vhonn muttered while he was gazing at every corner of the house. I saw him dust something that made him sneeze. I couldn't help but sneeze too when dust came into my nose. Then I replied to him, "This house has been empty for a couple of years. We can obviously see from how it looks, right?" He nodded. "Why did you come here? You're going to live here?" he then asked. "Yes," I responded along with a sigh. "From now on," I added. My face turned unhappy but contented. It would be better this way, though. And at least here, I wouldn't be able to see those people who caused me pain and distress. Here, I know this would be a good and fresh place to start anew. Vhonn seemed amused and delighted at my reply that I found him smiling at me to which I reacted with a furrowed brow. "We will get to see each other more often then." I didn't reply to him because I was not sure what he was trying to say. "What will you do now?" he asked once again. "I am going to clean up everything now. Aren't you going home yet?" "I can stay. You may need my help," he insisted willingly, and I didn't expect it. "No," I refused instantly. "It's okay. I'm used to this kind of stuff," I continued. He hesitated, but I assured. He must be thinking that I couldn't do the cleaning all by myself because of the heavy specks of dust around, the spider webs above, the massive things to lift and move, and all those needed to put into place for the house to look better than it has been as of the moment. He shrugged his shoulders. "Okay," he said, giving up. "Bye, see you again." He then turned his back at me. I removed my jacket, and when I put it over my bag, a thing fell to the floor. It was the calling card. I bent over to take it and sighted Vhonn's retreating figure. He was already outside when I called his name. "Vhonn!" He paused to look back inside. "Yeah?" His gaze traveled down to my hands. "This is yours, isn't it?" I asked. "Yes," he replied promptly as he rubbed his nape like he was shy. "Why do I have this? I have no idea how I got this." "I shoved it into your jacket's pocket when we were on the bus. Just call me when you need me. I affirm that I can help you with everything. Bye, Wren!" After he said those words, he scurried away like a flash. I was left standing and baffled. I didn't notice that moment when he put his calling card into my jacket's pocket. Anyway, I put it back from where it was before it fell to the floor. I then roamed my eyes around the house, not sure where I would start. In the end, I chose to search for the broom to brush away all the spider webs that were covering the ceilings and the walls. That was then the cue that I was starting to clean already. It took me several hours until I had cleaned and arranged everything. I did not even eat breakfast. When I checked the time, it was already afternoon, so I realized I haven't had my lunch too. I haven't even cleaned the outside of the house. Just all the inside. I blew out a heavy sigh as I slumped on the wooden couch. I got too tired obviously for hours of cleaning. I wanted to take a nap for a while, but my stomach did not agree as it rumbled in hunger. I went to the kitchen to quickly cook noodles that I'd brought with me from Zamboanga Sibugay. I needed to do groceries as soon as possible because there was no food here. But for now, I would have to take a rest after having these breakfast and lunch combined. I still needed to clean outside. Some who got to pass by here would think that this was a haunted house since how it looked on the outer side was dismal and terrible. It was creepy. I admit that I didn't feel fear that time I had seen this house because Vhonn was with me. I didn't know the reason why but I just felt somewhat safe and free from any unwanted, bad feeling the time he was with me. Maybe because he looked strong and brave. I'm not sure. "Vhonn is such a very nice guy." I instantly shook my head at my statement that made me surprised too. There was no way I should fall for him. I know myself. I could easily fall for a guy like him if I didn't stop myself. It was painful to get hurt again countless times.
