WREN'S POV
IMMEDIATELY, I moved away from the big dog and sat a few inches apart from it. I was still gaping at the sight of it. I really couldn't believe it. I was still amazed. I got to see it clearly now than last night. It was so huge.
The dog mobilized and then it stood up. It raised its right arm and I was stunned when it landed on my left shoulder. Then it made a low snarl. I did not know why but just like yesterday, I was not afraid anymore. Not even a little fear. I was confident. The huge dog was good.
"Thank you for watching me out the whole night. Thank you for what you did to me. Without your heat, I didn't know if I was still alive now," I said with sincerity, tapping the dog's right arm as I beamed.
It took back its arm and growled low again. It then stepped a few paces backward and without any cue, it turned its back at me. I stood up instantly when it walked away.
"Where are you going?" I asked curiously as if I would get an answer from it, but all it did was to take a glance at me then it ran away as fast as it could until it faded from my vision.
I heaved a sigh. I was wondering where that dog would go. Maybe it would go back to its owner. If only I could take that dog home, I would not hesitate to do so. It was so hard to live with no one by my side. Just an animal's companion would feel like I have someone with me. An animal is like a human, though. For me, some of the animals seemed to be better than some people. Some people just hurt a person's feelings but an animal's love makes a person feel that it cares for him. It would not leave him because it loves him. It would not abandon him. It would be right by your side.
I sniffed and blinked a few times when I noticed I was getting emotional. It was not raining anymore but the sounds of different animals or insects in the woods kept on playing like a piece of good music. The morning stuff. The forest seemed interesting to me now. I just hoped I would not be able to meet one or any number of scary things as I would proceed with what I'd been doing last night.
I composed myself and began to search for my grandfather's house again. I would never stop until I have found it.
I was already in the middle of searching when not more than ten minutes—I guess—a very familiar guy appeared from one of the trees in the forest. I stopped for a while and stared at his handsome face and good physique.
"Hi, Wren," I heard him greet, making me shake my head. Goodness! I wish he didn't notice I was staring at him for I didn't know how long.
I learned he was already a meter away from me, smiling widely like we knew each other. Well, we kind of knew each other. Just our names.
It was Vhonn. He was still wearing the same attire as yesterday on the bus. He is taller than me. My height is on the level of his shoulder. He has a fair complexion. His body is well-built and his hair is clean-cut and in black color. As for his facial features, his eyebrows are thick and black, his eyelashes are long, and his brown eyes are mesmerizing. I quickly lowered down my gaze to his pointed nose. I might melt if I looked intently at his eyes. His lips are kissable. His jawline is well-chiseled. Plus, his Adam's apple is so masculine.
"Done examining me?"
I suddenly blushed as I got back to my senses when I heard him speak. I looked away quickly as if he was having fun about me examining him. Oh, he caught me staring at him for a long while! It was so embarrassing that I wanted to bury my face on the ground and never appear from his sight ever again.
"So, hello," he greeted once again. When I encouraged myself to look at him again, I saw him with an attractive smile engraved on his lips.
I swallowed and cleared my throat. "H-hi," I shyly greeted back, stuttering.
"What are you doing here in the woods?" he asked.
"I am searching for my grandpa's house," I answered.
I could see he was a bit surprised. "So, you slept here the whole night?"
"Well, y-yeah." I was not looking at him anymore.
"You got lost, right?"
I nodded slightly.
"You're not afraid?"
"N-no," I replied promptly. It was a lie, though. I was afraid. Thanks to that huge dog. My fear faded. Without that dog, I was probably dead by now because of both fear and the cold night.
"Really?" He sounded like he was teasing and not convinced by my response.
I chose to stay silent, though. Why did he care anyway? I walked forward to continue, but later on, I noticed he was following me. I faced him. "Why are you here, too?"
He smiled. "I'll help you find the house. I know this forest and I have memorized every corner of it," he proudly said.
I raised one brow. "Are you sure?" I was not convinced.
"Yeah," he chuckled like he was amused.
I was skeptical, and when he felt it, he asked me. "Do you have a photo of the house? Maybe I could help you find it. I live here in Wubat."
I didn't find any negative reason to refuse his words so I pulled my phone out of my pants' one pocket. I clicked on it and scanned for the photo then I showed it to him when I already found it.
"So..." I uttered, waiting for his response if he was familiar with the house.
"Well, I am not sure," he told me. "But it looks familiar. Come on, follow me," he added and walked ahead of me.
I had no choice but to follow him. He said he lives in Wubat so there was a big possibility that he knew this forest, and he knew the path to get out of here. And maybe he knew the location of my grandpa's house. He was not a bad guy anyway. He even gave me a handkerchief on the bus because I was crying at that time. I felt my cheeks heat up at the memory.
"Hey! follow me!" I heard him call. I was lost in thoughts that I did not notice he was already a bit far from me.
I did not respond. I just started taking steps forward to follow him. He was only staring at me, obviously waiting for me. I got conscious as to how I moved, though. His stares were something. It reminded me of how Jeff stared at me the first time he saw me. Vhonn's stares were somewhat more intense than Jeff's. Maybe it was just my imagination or what, but that's how I perceived it. How assuming of me! I shook my head to erase that thought.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
I replied with a slight nod. Then he took it as a cue to walk again. It was already several minutes that passed by and I felt tired as we haven't seen what we've been looking for yet.
"Don't worry, Wren. We're almost there. If you're tired, we can rest for a while. Or I can carry you in my back if you want," he offered.
"I'm tired but I'm alright. Let's proceed," I told him. I felt shy at his offer. If it was Jeff who said it, I would quickly say yes, but he wasn't Jeff.
Why did I remember Jeff again? Forget him, Wren! Forget him!
I was thirsty, so I took out the tumbler I had in my bag and drank water then followed him again. After a few minutes, we already found ourselves out of the woods. And I didn't see at least a single house.
I glanced at him. "Where are we? Where's the house?"
"Let's walk a bit more. I tell you we can find it," he assured. "Just trust me," he added and flashed a smile once again.
I couldn't do anything so I didn't protest. We walked a bit more until he stopped. I also stopped, confused.
"Is that it?" He pointed somewhere using his index finger so I traced the direction.
I gasped when I saw a wooden house that was the same in the photo. "Oh, my God! Yeah! That's it! That's my grandpa's home!" I exclaimed cheerfully, almost jumped in happiness. I shifted my sight back to Vhonn who was now beaming.
"See? We found it," he affirmed.
I couldn't help but hug him. I could feel my tears falling. "Thank you, Vhonn. Without your help, maybe I was still lost in the woods right now. Thank you so much..." I sniffed as I sobbed.
I felt him hug me too and he gently tapped my back. "It's nothing. I am glad to help you."
And when I found out what I was doing to him, I instantly detached from the hug and wiped my tears away. A smile in the corner of his lips was formed and he was like teasing me now about hugging him. My cheeks colored so it made me look away. Oh, gosh! I've embarrassed myself too much and many times in front of him!
"Let's go." He held my hand after he said that and took me with him to my grandpa's home.
