"Stacy why didn't you tell me you were contesting for the class captain slot???" Fidelia asked me, her big brown eyes bulging out of her eye socket and sparkling with flames that radiated anger . " you know that I have been dreaming of that spot ever since this resumption" she continued to say as she walked towards me carrying her pink teddy bag pack on her left shoulder and a pink purse on her right hand. she looked amazing and so confident, commanding fear and respect from people as she walked. "come on Fifi,you know I don't have time for such silly things", I said honestly, "I was nominated by the teachers like every other year, I've got a lot of things on my mind, contesting to be class captain isn't one of them. besides, if I ever wanted to contest you'd be the first person to know right?" Fifi looked at me doubtfully then said "you are right,you should focus on selling vegetables and doing other menial jobs to take care of your grandma instead of trying to compete with me Ok? " "Fidelia Daniels!" I called her full name , sounding really hurt by her remarks,",you are my best friend!!!! why will I ever compete with you? even if I wanted to,I am no match for you. you are beautiful and rich , getting everything at the snap of your fingers unlike poor me ,I wouldn't dare compete with you" I said truthfully still feeling hurt . " Hahahaha I'm so glad you get it girl, Now let hurry and get to school,I have to meet up with Nelson before the first period" Fifi said without remorse and started walking towards the school gate. I followed behind still feeling hurt and wondering why my best friend who was meant to be nice to me even if no one was ,was actually the one saying hurtful things to me. it's not like it was the first time Fifi has said such things to me but I was particularly hurt that morning because my Nana wasn't doing so well and I felt helpless . As we walked to school,I was silent all through thinking of how to earn money for my Nana's medication, she was the only family I had or at least knew. I never knew who my parents were and my Nana never talked about them. every time I asked her about them ,she would start tearing up so I stopped asking and just appreciated having someone to call family. I was so lost in my own world that I didn't see the big sign post that Carried the big write up of Santa Monica College. it was one of the best and biggest schools in my city and the staffs believed in discipline, honesty and hard work. Every teenager dreamt of going to Santa Monica because of its academic excellence but only the rich were privileged to be there. If you are wondering how I got to be a student in Santa Monica college since I'm very poor ,here is how I got into Santa Monica. I use to attend Eko community secondary School before I got a scholarship into Santa Monica. I loved writing and reading since I had no friends . I read novels, magazines and newspapers, until one day I was reading the punch news paper and saw a scholarship position at the back page of the news paper. the eligiblity was only for public schools with great academic excellence and to apply, you only needed to write an essay of "what you wanted to become in future and why?" so I took the chances and tried my luck. months after I had applied for the scholarship, I got a call from my principal demanding to see my parents or guardian " Miss Stacy Mulligan" my principal Mr Ayodeji spoke to me " You are an outstanding student and once again you have made us proud with your achievement, I will love to see your parents tomorrow by 9am in my office" "I'm sorry sir,I do not have parents" I said shyly, " I live with my grandmother and I'm afraid she won't be able to make it here because of the distance,she is very old and cannot treck the distance so if there is anything news, I will gladly deliver it to her. " I concluded. "what do you mean she can't treck? who is asking her to treck? there principal questioned rhetorically,there are bikes and Cabs and buses everywhere ,she can take one" he added "but I'm sorry sir,we can't afford transportation fare and even if someone were to give it to us,we would just save it up for my education and feeding,so I'm begging you to tell me whatever it is you want to tell my grandmother and I will let her know" I stated . The principal looked at me pitifully,smiled and said "there is a saying that Only God drives away flies from tailless cows, I'm happy to tell you that with your hardwork and dedication,God has seeing your plight and answered your prayers,you have been given a life opportunity which you have to use very wisely, because if you misbehave and misuse this opportunity,it might never come again" the principal advice. "I'm sorry sir ,I have no clue of what you are talking about and I will really appreciate it if you fill me in please" I said " well, Miss Stacy what would you do if you do if I told you to resume at santa Monica next term? " I laughed and said it's impossible "Nothing in life is impossible my dear child, wherever there is a will,there is always a way,you just have to believe and walk hard ,you will achieve whatever you set your mind on, I'm very pleased to tell you that you have been offered a full funded scholarship to Santa Monica and you are to resume next term. your fees, uniforms,books and additional school expenses will be taking care of by the administrations of Santa Monica, congratulations my dear child. I wish you the very best in future" My principal said handing over the scholarship letter to me. it was too good to be true!!!!! overwhelmed with happiness and gratitude I thanked my principal and left his office feeling really proud of myself. when I got home that day, I told my grandmother,I can still remember the joy on my Nana's face. She was so proud of me and even made my favorite dish of cocoyam porridge.lost in my own world , I kept waking until I heard "Stacy where are you going? Fifi brought me back from daydreaming " oh sorry I forgot myself, there's a lot going on with me lately ,I'm really sorry" Fifi came closer to me like a friend would and hugged me " Stacy it's all going to be fine ok? you should back out from the contest and just focus on solving your issues I will always be here for you if you need me" Fifi told me. " Thank Fifi , I'm really grateful you are my friend and I know I can count on you. as for the contest,I never applied for any class captain so I can't back ou.Since you are applying, all I can do is vote for you and pray that you win" I told her . "thanks Stacey, it means a lot " Fifi smiled at me holding my hands "you are welcome,now let's get to class " I Said and we started walking into the administrative block. "If you were to give a speech on why you should be this term's class captain what would you say? Fifi asked me "just the same thing I have been saying for the past two years" I answered "Rub it in Madam Stacy Mulligan the only girl who has been class captain for two straight years " Fifi said rolling her eyes with jealousy written all over her face "well Miss Fidelia Daniels,I wasn't trying to "rub" it in you know,I was just trying to........ '" Hey Nelson I didn't know you would make it this early, come on let's go" Fifi interrupted me as soon as she saw Nelson Adebayo "Hey Star, what's up with you? you've not been yourself lately" star is what everyone calls me in school aside fidelia who thinks the name does not suit me "Hey Nelson I'm good thanks for asking,how about you? I asked "Not bad,I'm just mad at you for bailing out on our study schedule yesterday" Nelson Said trying to feign anger "I'm sorry my Nana hasn't been feeling well lately. Maybe we should schedule another time " I told him "Hold on a minute,Fifi cut in angrily " are the two of you seeing each other secretly? it doesn't sound right you know,the most popular and handsome boy courting someone as low as Stacy Mulligan" Fifi stated disgustingly,but she was right though. Nelson Adebayo is the son of the Famous judge Adebayo ,he is the definition of handsomeness ,he is like 6ft tall,I will say to tall for 16 ,with Jade green eyes ,a well framed face with pointed nose,a set of finely curved pink lips with coily black hair which he usually dye the tips gold, giving the hair a unique celebrity look. his mom is a Lebanese woman hence giving him his foreign look. Nelson is aware of his good looks so he takes extra care and work really hard to maintain the looks ,he is well build than most of our male teachers and every girl dreams of dating someone like Nelson. when I say every girl I mean myself inclusive. but who I'm I kidding? people like us know better than dreaming for thing like that . Aside from his good looks, firmly build chest and six pacs stomach , Nelson is the captain of the basketball team,the football team and the swimming team. he has also been the assistant class captain for the two years I have been in Santa Monica and also the only person who dares to compete with me academically. yet,with all this features,Nelson is the nicest and most humble rich kid I have ever come across,it makes me wonder if he was actually born by humans or Angels. The only thing I have in common with Nelson is academics and the fact that I am beautiful even in rags. Fidelia has been in love with Nelson since I can remember but she has never really gotten a shot with Nelson. Maybe because of her arrogant attitude. She watches every one of Nelson's match and cheers the loudest just to get his attention but it never works. How she got an appointment to meet with Nelson before class is a wonderment to me. Nelson has been having issues with chemistry so he pays me to coach him during the weekend . so every weekend,I get to spend time with this prince as well as make N500 naira. I have never told Fifi about though, this is because she will want to start taking lessons too and that will be a big set back on our studies. so I kept it a secret. "who said anything about courting here and what is wrong in courting someone low? Nelson replied calmly "I'm having issues with my chemistry and I asked Stacy for help,is that so bad? "But you should have asked me,our house is way more comfortable than the slums she lives in,we have an aircon and you will get snacks in between lessons. " Fifi said "Well, I would have asked you if you had the brain for books up there,but since your brain have been eaten up by vague things, I'd rather ask someone who still have brains" Nelson Said jokingly "Are you really having issues with chemistry or you are beginning to fall for Stacy ? "wether I am into Stacy or chemistry is none of your business. if you are done blabbing can we get on to class and carry on with the maths lesson? I'm sure with a brain as empty as yours it will take me an entire day to teach you one simple equation' Nelson teased and started walking towards the building "I'm sorry Fifi I should have told you,I forgot about it because of my Nana's illness " I lied trying to apologise. "Did you really forget? or you just enjoyed the coziness of Nelson's company, I'm asking you nicely now to stay away from Nelson Adebayo only because you are my friend,I wouldn't be so nice next time" Fifi warned and started making her way to the class but paused to add "Besides,you two are opposite worlds you do not belong to his level and never will so if I were you,I will focus on maintaining my scholarship in this school and taking care of my sick grandmother" Fifi hissed and walked away
