The hotel in Chihuahua was small but very clean, the sort of place that seemed to cater to local businesspeople and possibly a few adventurous Americans who didn’t want to stay in something that felt like every other hotel on their own side of the border. Ava and Gabriel didn’t have much luggage, and very little needed to be unpacked, so in less than fifteen minutes, the two of them were already back outside, wandering the streets and taking in the sights. Actually, for some reason, she hadn’t expected Chihuahua to be such a big city, bigger than Albuquerque, with gorgeous baroque churches and tall mountains on the east side of town. She found herself wishing that they would be able to stay here longer than just the one night, even though she knew this was no simple pleasure trip, no jaunt
