Episode one
Roselle.
I needed this job to raise money to treat my mum who was suffering from kidney stone disease. It had been three days now since she had her dialysis treatment, and she needed money urgently to continue, else she would die.
Despite my graduating as a first-class student at a top-notch university, I still couldn't fathom why I was always rejected by companies anytime I applied for a job. If I was not mistaken, and also not hyperbolic, this company would be the tenth place that I had submitted my Curriculum Vitae period. I finally got to the front of his door, my heart punching harder as if it would burst out as I was about to enter his office. I didn't know why I was having this negative thought of losing the job again. Maybe because I had always been rejected or maybe because he was called cold, possessive, and domineering. Nonetheless, I summoned courage, cleared the lump in my throat, and walked into his office silently with my head down so that the only thing you could hear was the clicking sound of my nine-inch high French hills that clicked the marbled floor occasionally.
" Roselle!"
I pursed my lips as I heard my name from him. Did he know me? In excitement, I raised my gaze to meet Black, my ex-boyfriend, whom I broke up with back then in my high school days. He was dressed in a wine suit, black bowtie, and black Italian shoes that sparkled like precious stones.
He was seated on his billion-dollar Pininfarina Xten Ergonomic chair, his leg crossed over the other at the knee, and his first finger clocking one side of his perfect sunken cheeks as he stared at me with dead eyes.
"Black!.....oh, sorry, I mean Mr. Black! What are you doing here?" I muttered with shaking legs.
" I should be asking you what the hell you are doing in my office, Roselle!" He responded, gritting his teeth in revenge.
" Oh! I am sorry to ask.. Mmm" I mumbled for words, anything I could say to relieve his temper. I could not believe he could be the CEO of this extravagant company. He used to be a dullard and a woman wrapper back then in his high school days.
" What do you want?" He rested his head on his billion-dollar chair and asked, his eyes locking with mine.
" I submitted my curriculum vitae to this company some days ago, and I was informed to come for the response today". I responded to him and reshaped my mouth in a way he could have mercy upon me.
Black sneered disdainfully, dusting off invisible dirt on his suit as though mocking me, and I was almost tempted to kick that smirk off his face.
" Well, I know you are a brilliant girl, but you would not be employed," he said obscenely with a surge of authority.
" No, Black. I needed this job for my mum's dialysis treatment." I fell to my knees and begged him.
" Leave my office, fool!" He smacked the table, some pieces of paper flying away randomly, and a shiver ran through my spine In panic.
Four years ago, I broke up with Black. It wasn't intentional. I was the first child of my parents, and ever since my father died, I have been the one assisting my mother with her petty trade. However, one evening, my mother slumped and on getting to the hospital, the doctor confirmed that she had kidney stones. I was exempted from school to focus on my mum. I was in the hospital one morning when an unknown number sent me pictures of Black and another girl having s*x. I was heartbroken, and I decided to cut off the relationship between I and Black to focus on how to get money for my mum's dialysis and also focus more on my academics. It wouldn't be nice to be concerned about my mum's health and still bother about Black.
" Black, you shouldn't act as if I offended you," I
" Get out of my office, Roselle. Your mum's life is of no value to me. You go and get a job from your perilous crush," he insisted, his voice tinted in an unobscure intransigence.
" What crush are you talking about?" I pleaded again, rubbing my two palms together in tears. This was the only place left for me to get employed. I needed to beg him.
" Don't you dare ask me a stupid question, Roselle," Black insisted,
Black screeched his voice high as he called for his bouncer and a few minutes later, he bounced in. He was tall, dark, and had a prowess stature.
" Throw this dirty thing out of my office and the next time I see her in my office, consider yourself sacked, "Black ordered distinctly.
The bouncer moved to me, pulled me up, and motioned me out of the office like a dirty thing as Black addressed me. I clasped my bag firmly to my shoulder and started thinking of what I could do. The doctor said my mum needed to be operated on as fast as possible else she would die. If I refused to do what he wanted, my mum would die, and I would blame myself for it later, because this was the only hope left.
I was still at the front of his company when a man drove into the parking space of the company. Even before he stepped out, I knew he would be handsome by merely catching his smile through the window of his car, and my instinct didn't betray me as the man stepped down from his car. He was truly the definition of handsome and cute. Everything about him was sexy, including his pair of icy-blue eyes that fluttered unobtrusively. I should mind my business, right? But no. I was so busy stealing his gaze that he caught me, and smiled amorously. Oh gosh!!!
I curled my lips in embarrassment - it was a painful thing for a beautiful girl like me to get caught staring at a fine man like him- but then, he walked up to me belligerently. He was in a wine suit, the first two buttons of his white T-shirt undone, and a sparkling chain was on his neck.
" Good day, miss!" He offered me his hand and I took it, tempted not to look into his eyes, but I could not just resist his voodoo.
" Good day, Sir!" I took his hand and responded respectfully. Apart from being cute and handsome, he looked like those young billionaires in the City, just like Black. I could guess this from his sparkling jewelry and his nice body cologne. A poor soul could not smell this good.
" You look bothered. Hope all is well?" He asked, his voice laced with genuine concern.
What would be my gain if I pretended to be one of those girls in the City just to feed my ego? I would die of hunger and thus, lose my precious mum in poverty. Even if I was left in disparage, I would not mind telling him how abundantly poor I was.
" I am just scared of losing my mum. She has been sick for months now and the doctor demanded some dollars for her surgery, and presently I have nothing with me. And also, I am so unfortunate to be rejected as one of the staff in this company". I responded phlegmatically but looked away in disgrace.
" You have no problem with that. I would give you all the money you need to take care of your mum, offer you a job as my assistant, and especially, attend to you in Athens, on one condition,“ he said benevolently, though his last three words sounded coercive. My eyes shot up to his, and I could feel a strange tension between us.
" What could that be?" I asked him, our eyes locking, and I was curiously guessing what he could demand from me, but he was so calm and relaxed that he was so inconspicuous.
" If only you could pretend to be my fiancé" he spoke.
" How do I do that?" I asked, my hands in the air.
He took out a plain sheet and a pen, and stretched it forth to me. "This is everything you need to know about the contract. Sign it now or never!"
