CHAPTER 11: The Hunt for the Future Luna Begins

1473 Words
Open this diary only if you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to become everyone’s target without asking for it. Have you ever loved someone so deeply that simply standing beside them placed your life in danger? Dear Diary… today, I stopped being just Marionette Miche. Today, I became someone the entire hidden world wanted to claim. The next morning, the world looked exactly the same, yet everything felt different. The sun still rose above Crescent High Academy, students still hurried through the gates with unfinished homework, and teachers still complained about punctuality. But to me, the familiar campus had become a battlefield disguised as a school. Every face I passed made me wonder whether they were truly ordinary students or wolves hiding behind human smiles. Every whispered conversation sounded as though it might be about me. Ever since Max Briggs revealed the truth about the Luna Mark, I no longer trusted appearances. I tightened my grip around my diary as I walked through the front gate. It had become more than a notebook now. It was the only place where I could still be honest without worrying that someone would twist my words or use them against me. I gently brushed my fingers across its worn cover before whispering to myself, “You’re still here. Good… because I think I’m going to need you more than ever.” “Talking to your diary again?” Mina asked as she suddenly appeared beside me with a teasing smile. I nearly jumped in panic. “You really enjoy shortening my lifespan, don’t you?” I replied, placing a hand over my racing heart. Mina laughed warmly. “Only a little,” she said. Then her smile faded. “You’ve looked worried ever since yesterday. Did something happen after school?” For a brief moment, I wanted to tell her everything. I wanted to tell her that werewolves existed, that Jack was one of them, that rival Alpha families were preparing for war because of a mysterious mark on my wrist. But the words refused to leave my mouth. Jack had trusted me with a dangerous secret, and no matter how confused I was, I couldn’t betray him. “I’ve just been… thinking a lot,” I answered quietly. Mina looked unconvinced, but she nodded anyway. “Whatever it is, don’t carry it all by yourself,” she replied gently. “Even the strongest people eventually become tired.” Her words lingered in my mind long after we separated for class. Across the courtyard, Jack stood alone beneath the old maple tree as usual. There were students all around him, yet he somehow looked isolated from everyone else, as though an invisible wall separated him from the ordinary world. He held several council documents in one hand while staring into the distance, his expression distant and burdened. He looked less like a seventeen-year-old student and more like someone carrying the future of an entire kingdom for a youngster. Before I could gather enough courage to approach him, Eliza stepped out again from the administration building. She walked directly to his side with practiced familiarity. I literally became frustrated and unable to meet him as I wanted to. “Jack,” she said softly, handing him another folder, “your father wants the council reports reviewed before sunset. Representatives from the eastern and northern packs are arriving earlier than expected.” Jack accepted the folder with a weary sigh. “Thank you, Eliza.” She studied his face carefully before asking, “Did you sleep at all?” “Not much,” he admitted. “You’ve been pushing yourself too hard,” she replied, concern evident in her voice. “You can’t protect everyone by yourself.” Jack smiled faintly. “Maybe not,” he answered, “but I have to try.” Watching them together made something twist painfully inside my chest. They understood each other’s responsibilities so naturally. They shared a world I had only discovered a few days ago. Once again, I questioned whether I truly belonged anywhere near Jack’s life. As I turned away, a familiar voice interrupted my thoughts. “Running away again?” I looked up to find Gabriel Sterling leaning casually against the hallway wall, his usual confident smile resting comfortably on his face. “I’m not running,” I replied, though I wasn’t entirely convinced by my own words. Gabriel chuckled softly. “You always look at him as though you’re waiting for permission to walk over.” I lowered my eyes in shyness. “I don’t think…” I whispered, “…that I belong beside him.” Gabriel’s smile disappeared immediately. He straightened and looked directly into my eyes. “Don’t ever say that about yourself,” he said firmly. “Whether you choose me, choose Jack, or choose nobody at all, your worth isn’t determined by the family you were born into.” His words surprised me this time because for the first time, I saw past his playful flirting, there was sincerity in his eyes, real sincerity that touched my heart that very moment. “Thank you,” I said quietly. He smiled again, though this time it was softer. “I still won’t stop asking you out,” he added with a small laugh. Despite everything, I found myself smiling as usual, “You really are impossible.” “So I’ve been told,” he said back with confidence. From across the courtyard, Jack looked up just in time to see Gabriel making me laugh. His expression froze for a bit in jealousy, his fingers tightened around the folder he was holding and without saying a single word, he just turned around and walked away. I felt my heart sink immediately. “Jack!” I called. He didn’t stop this time, he just simply continued walking. Eliza glanced back at me before following him. That single moment hurt far more than I wanted to admit. Hidden inside the principal’s office, Max Briggs and Victor Sterling stood facing one another across a polished conference table. Their conversation had long since moved beyond business and more to personal pack grudges. Victor folded his hands behind his back. “The Luna has already become emotionally attached to your son,” he said calmly. “That makes her predictable.” Max’s expression remained unreadable and calmly cold, “My son’s feelings are none of your concern.” Victor smiled out, “They become my concern when they affect the balance of power.” Max stepped closer. “And you possibly intend to use Gabriel.” Victor didn’t deny it. “If Marionette willingly accepts Gabriel’s affection,” he replied, “the Luna will stand beside the Sterling family.” “And if she refuses?” Max asks reluctantly. Victor’s smile became colder. “Then we’ll simply ensure she has nowhere else to stand.” Outside the office, someone silently listened through the barely opened door. It was Eliza, her face slowly paled in jealousy as she realized something terrifying, neither family werr simply just protecting Marionette anymore, they were beginning to treat her like a prize. That evening, I returned home emotionally exhausted. I sat beside my bedroom window, opened my diary, and let my heart speak into my personal friend, my diary. “Dear Diary… today I realized that everyone seems to know where my life is heading except me. Gabriel tells me I deserve better than my insecurities. Jack keeps protecting me while pushing me away. Eliza watches me like I’m stealing something that belongs to her. The Briggs family sees responsibility. The Sterling family sees opportunity. But when I look in the mirror… I still only see Marionette Miche.” I paused before continuing my writing. “My goal hasn’t changed though, I don’t want power, I don’t want titles, and I definitely don’t want to become some legendary Luna because other people expect it, I want to become someone strong enough that I can stand beside Jack without hiding behind fear. I want to uncover the truth about my mark, end the hatred between the Briggs and Sterling families, and prove that love doesn’t have to become another battlefield.” Just as I finished writing, the silver mark on my wrist suddenly began glowing again, brighter than ever before. The light spread across my bedroom walls. Outside my window, dozens of wolves lifted their heads toward the moon at exactly the same moment. Then, somewhere deep within the forest, an ancient howl echoed through the night, and a voice followed it. It sounded cold, powerful, and unmistakable. “The Luna has awakened… begin the hunt.” I froze as another howl answered from a different direction, then another, and another. They weren’t coming from one pack, they were actually coming from all of them.
