Open this diary only if you’ve ever watched your entire world shatter in a single night.
Open this diary only if you’ve ever discovered that the person you loved was hiding a secret so impossible that it changed everything you thought you knew about them. Because tonight, I learned that monsters exist… and one of them has my heart.
The thing outside scratched at the front door again slowly, deliberately as though it knew we were all standing inside, terrified and waiting.
The sound sent a chill through my entire body. Nobody moved in that instant, nobody even breathed. I looked around the room, my mother was pale, my father looked as though he might faint, max Briggs stood completely still, his face hard and unreadable, and Jack… Jack was just staring at the door.
His entire body had gone rigid. The gentle, quiet boy I knew from school was gone, and in his place stood someone else, someone who looks dangerous and powerful.
Then, there was an attack at the door.
BANG!
The front door shook violently. I screamed in fear. My mother grabbed my hand. “Marionette,” she whispered, her voice trembling, “stay close to me. Whatever happens, do not leave my side.”
I nodded automatically. I wasn’t even sure I could even move. My legs felt like jelly, then I looked at Jack, and my breath caught that moment because his eyes… they were glowing, an impossible, beautiful blue, the same color as the ocean beneath moonlight, the same color I had spent years secretly admiring, except now… they weren’t human.
“Jack…” I whispered. He turned toward me, for a moment, those glowing eyes softened. Then another crash echoed through the house.
The front door splintered. Cold night air flooded the room. I jumped backward, and Jack stepped in front of me without hesitation, again, he always did that. He always protected me, even now, even in this madness.
I looked at his back and felt something warm ache inside my chest. Questions began to storm my mind.
Why? Why did he always protect me? And why did that make me want to cry?
“Father,” Jack said quietly, his voice sounded different, deeper, and stronger. Max nodded once and answered him, “I know.”
“No unnecessary risks,” Max said softly. “I understand,” Jack replied. I blinked because now, I am lost in confusion. Why were they talking like they were preparing for war? I swallowed hard.
“What is happening?” I asked out, my voice shaking. “Can someone please explain why your eyes are glowing and why something is trying to break into my house?”
Nobody answered again. Honestly, I was beginning to hate secrets. Then, there was another accident.
CRASH!
The front door exploded inward. I screamed out again. A man stood in the doorway, or… at least, I thought it was a man. His clothes were torn, his hair was wild and his eyes glowed a frightening yellow.
He looked at me, directly at me and then he smiled. “There you are,” he said softly. I froze because the way he looked at me made my skin crawl as though he had been searching for me, as though he had finally found something precious.
“I’ve waited a very long time to meet you,” he said. I took a step backward, and Jack took one forward immediately, protecting me like a guardian angel, again.
The stranger laughed. “The future Alpha protects his treasure,” he said. Treasure? I frowned. I wasn’t anybody’s treasure. Jack’s shoulders stiffened. “Leave,” he said coldly. The man smiled wider, “And if I don’t?”
Silence.
The air in the room became heavy. Then Jack spoke, “If you stay, I will remove you myself.” I blinked in surprise. That didn’t sound like the shy boy from school at all.
The stranger’s smile faded, then he looked at me. “You don’t know anything, do you?” he asked softly. “You don’t know who you are. You don’t know why they’ve hidden you. You don’t know why everyone fears what you’ll become.”
I stared, What? I looked at my mother. She looked devastated. I looked at Max. He looked grim as always.
Then the stranger laughed again. “Perhaps I should show you something.” Before anyone could stop him, his body changed.
The sound was horrible. I could hear it, bones cracked, muscles shifted, his body grew larger and larger and hair spread across his skin. I stumbled backward in terror.
Within seconds…
A giant wolf stood inside my living room. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t think, I couldn’t even scream because this was the wolf they were talking about, the wolf was enormous, its yellow eyes gleamed in the darkness.
This couldn’t be real. This couldn’t possibly be real. And just in my moment of distress, Jack stepped forward. He looked back at me, and for a moment… I saw sadness in his eyes.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “For what?” I whispered. He smiled, a small, almost painful smile. “For this.”
Just then, blue light exploded around him. The room became brighter, the wind outside howled. I could hear the sound of his bones shifting. I stared in fear also.
No, this couldn’t. The light faded out, and standing where Jack had been… was a massive black wolf. Its fur gleamed like midnight, its blue eyes looked directly into mine.
I nearly forgot how to breathe when seeing it. This wasn’t a dream, neither was this fantasy novel, yhis was real. Jack… was a werewolf, the boy I loved… was a werewolf.
The black wolf slowly approached me. I should have run. I should have screamed. Instead… I lifted my trembling hand. I don’t know why, maybe I was in shock, or maybe I had completely lost my mind.
The wolf lowered his head. My fingers touched its soft black fur. It was warm and real. I gasped, those blue eyes softened, and somehow… I knew it was still him, still my Jack, still the boy who caught me whenever I fell, and still the boy who always looked at me like I mattered.
Then the yellow-eyed wolf laughed. “Look at you,” he said. “You aren’t even afraid of him.” The black wolf growled with a dangerous sound, protective and possessive.
The yellow wolf’s smile widened, “Oh… now I understand.” The room became silent. “What?” Max asked coldly. The yellow wolf looked at me, then at Jack, and then back at me and smile, “They’ve already chosen each other.”
I blinked in surprise again. What? Before I could ask, a sharp pain suddenly shot through my wrist. I cried out in pain. Everyone turned toward me. A silver light glowed beneath my skin.
I stared at it, a strange mark slowly appeared on my wrist, beautiful, ancient yet impossible. “What…” I whispered asking them.
The yellow-eyed wolf’s smile vanished. “No,” he whispered. Max Briggs suddenly stepped forward and his eyes widened. “No…” he said quietly. Even my mother looked horrified.
I looked around desperately. “Why is everyone looking at me like that?” Nobody answered. Then Max slowly looked into my eyes. His face had gone pale, “The mark…” he whispered.
I swallowed and spoke, “What about it?” His expression became unreadable. “It belongs to only one person.” The room became silent. I could hear my own heartbeat, “What person?” I whispered.
Max took a deep breath, then he said the words that changed everything.“The future Luna.”
I stared, as my eyes widened that moment. I laughed nervously. “No,” I said softly. “No, that’s impossible. I’m just Marionette. I write in a diary. I trip over my own feet. I can't be somebody’s future anything.”
Nobody laughed. Nobody corrected him. I looked at my mother, she was only crying. I looked at Jack, even in wolf form, I could tell that he seemed tense, and afraid.
“Jack?” I whispered. He lowered his head, and somehow… That hurt. I stood up. “No,” I said, my voice shaking. “Somebody tell me what’s happening. Right now.”
Max looked directly into my eyes. “You were never ordinary, Marionette.” The room spun. “And your destiny…” He paused, then he looked at Jack, “…is connected to my son.”
I froze because I got lost here. Connected? To Jack? Before I could speak…
BANG!
The windows exploded inward. Glass shattered everywhere. I screamed in panic. A freezing wind rushed into the room, and standing outside… was a tall figure wearing a black cloak. I couldn’t see the person’s face, only his two glowing golden eyes.
The stranger slowly raised a hand, then pointed directly at me. “You found her first,” the figure said softly. The voice echoed unnaturally. Max immediately stepped in front of me.
The black wolf did the same. The stranger smiled and then spoke words that made my blood run cold.
“Bring me the Luna.”
The lights suddenly went out that moment. Everything became darkness, and then something suddenly grabbed my wrist and I screamed out.
