CHAPTER 12: The Diary That Shouldn't Exist

2084 Words
Open this diary only if you’ve ever wished your life could go back to being ordinary. Dear Diary… today, I learned that you are more than paper and ink. Somehow, you have been guiding me toward the truth since the day I first wrote my name on your pages. The haunting chorus of wolves continued long after midnight. Their mournful howls echoed through the forest surrounding our small neighborhood, each cry seeming closer than the last, as though every hidden pack had heard the awakening of the Luna Mark. Sleep refused to come. I just sat on my bed with my knees drawn to my chest, my diary resting on my lap, while pale moonlight poured through my bedroom window. My fingertips gently traced the silver mark on my wrist. Although its glow had faded, warmth still pulsed beneath my skin like a second heartbeat. Every time I closed my eyes, I always seem to see Jack’s blue wolf eyes staring at me, not with fear, but with determination. Somehow, that memory somehow still comforted me more than it frightened me. I slowly opened my diary and smiled weakly. “You’ve been with me since I was little,” I whispered softly, brushing my fingers across its worn leather cover. “You’ve listened to every embarrassing confession, every hopeless crush, every dream I was too afraid to tell another person. You’re probably tired of hearing me write about Jack Briggs every single , aren’t you?” A tiny laugh escaped my lips before disappearing just as quickly. “I wish you could answer me,” I continued quietly. “Because I don’t know what I’m supposed to do anymore.” As though responding to my wish, something unexpectedly slipped from the back cover of the diary and landed softly on my blanket. I frowned in surprise, “What…” Carefully picking it up, I realized it wasn’t one of my pages. It was old, very old like the 90s, its edges had turned yellow with age, and elegant handwriting covered both sides of the paper. My heart immediately began racing. “I’ve read this diary hundreds of times,” I whispered in confusion. “How could I have missed this part?” With trembling fingers, I unfolded the paper. The very first sentence made my blood run cold. “To the girl who carries this diary… if these words have appeared before you, then you must have already discovered that you are a Luna.” I stopped breathing instantly. The handwriting wasn’t mine, it actually belonged to someone else, someone who had written this years before I was even born. My eyes quickly hurried across the page. “This diary was never created to record your life. It was entrusted to protect the Luna until the day she discovered the truth herself. Trust the Alpha whose heart chooses you… but never trust the silence surrounding your birth.” “My birth…” I whispered. The sentence echoed inside my mind. What silence? Why would my birth matter? Who could have written this? Before I could continue reading, three firm knocks echoed from downstairs. My parents were already awake. I quickly hid the letter inside the diary before quietly leaving my room. As I reached the staircase, unfamiliar voices drifted into the living room. “We’re here under the authority of the Wolf Council.” Every muscle in my body stiffened that moment. When I entered the room, Jack and Max Briggs were already there. Jack instinctively moved from his position at his father side, until he was standing between me and the strangers. Without saying a single word, without even thinking, he always did that because he is simply… Jack. Three men dressed in elegant black suits stood near our front door. They looked like businessmen, only their sharp golden eyes betrayed what they truly were. The oldest among them stepped forward. “Alpha King Max Briggs,” he said respectfully. “The High Council has reached a decision.” Max folded his hands behind his back like he was expecting this. “What decision?” he asks them calmly. “The Luna must be transferred into Council protection immediately,” They said. Silence filled the room that moment. They were actually referring to me indirectly, planning to take me like I am a property. Jack answered before anyone else could, defending me, “No.” The council elder slowly looked toward him. “This is not a request, Young Alpha.” “I know,” Jack replied calmly. “Then understand that refusing the Council carries consequences, Young Master,” they said to Jack. Jack didn’t move from where he was. “I’ve accepted that.” The elder sighed in disappointment. “The Sterling family has begun contacting independent packs throughout the continent. Smaller territories are choosing sides. Every hour the Luna remains outside Council supervision increases the risk of civil conflict.” I stared at them, this time, they weren’t talking about me like I was a person, they were discussing me like I was territory, like I was an object, something valuable to possess, and something worth fighting over. My chest tightened painfully in irritation which I can’t explain. Finally, Max spoke. “Marionette remains under Briggs protection.” The elder narrowed his eyes. “Until when?” Max’s answer was immediate. “Until she chooses otherwise.” Those words surprised everyone, even Jack looked at his father in surprise. After much argument, the council members eventually left, though none of them looked satisfied. The silence they left behind felt heavier than their presence. After several moments, Max slowly turned toward me. “You may continue attending school,” he said. Relief flooded my heart immediately. “But…” he added slowly. My relief suddenly again. “You will no longer be alone.” “I don’t need bodyguards,” I protested. Max remained unmoved and simply replied, “You will need more than bodyguards.” “What does that mean?” I asked reluctantly confused. “It means,” he replied calmly, “that someone will remain beside you every moment you’re outside this house.” Before I could argue again, Jack stepped forward. “I’ll do it.” The room became quiet. Max looked directly at his son. “You already carry the responsibilities of the future Alpha King.” “I know,” Jack agreed. “You have Council meeting, You have pack training, You have succession preparations,” Mac added. “I’ll attend them, complete it, make time, Father.” Max stared at him for a long moment, and then finally, he asked quietly, “This isn’t simply about duty anymore, is it?” Jack remained silent, then, almost reluctantly, he looked toward me. His expression softened in a way I had never seen before. “Protecting her…” he said quietly, “…is protecting the future I want.” My heartbeat completely lost its rhythm. The future he wanted? What future? Before I could ask, Jack looked away. The moment disappeared, but yet those words stayed with me all day. School felt strangely peaceful afterward, almost unnaturally peaceful, no mysterious attacks, no wolves, no strange accidents, only ordinary lessons, ordinary conversations, and ordinary laughter. Oddly enough, that frightened me even more. Storms were always quiet before they arrived. Jack walked beside me between every class, sometimes we talked, sometimes we simply enjoyed the silence. Neither of us seemed uncomfortable anymore. At one point, I accidentally dropped every notebook I was carrying while lost in thought along the way to my locker. “I really should stop doing that,” I muttered in embarrassment. Jack crouched beside me, picking up the scattered books. “I’ve noticed this happens quite often,” he replied with the faintest hint of amusement. I smiled at him, “So you’ve been paying attention?” “I notice more than people think,” Jack replied. Our eyes met that very moment, and I felt that it should last more because neither of us looked away immediately. The entire hallway suddenly felt very small, very quiet, and very warm. For one impossible moment, it felt like the rest of the school had disappeared. Then, the voice came from nowhere. “Jack.” Eliza’s voice shattered the moment between us. She approached gracefully, carrying several official-looking folders. “There you are,” she said pleasantly before looking at me. “Oh, Marionette, I hope I’m not interrupting.” I immediately stepped backward, “N-No…” Jack frowned slightly and turned to Eliza pretending like it was normal. “What is it, Eliza?” She handed him a folder.“The Council has changed tomorrow’s security arrangements.” Jack opened it and his expression immediately darkened. “What?” “They’ve voted unanimously,” She lowered her voice. “They’re sending Royal Guards to Crescent High.” I blinked confused. Royal Guards? To school? Why? Jack quickly closed the folder, “They’ve gone too far.” “I’m afraid…” Eliza replied quietly, “…they believe the Sterling family intends to make their move very soon.” As those words settled over us, I suddenly realized that every peaceful moment I had shared with Jack today… Might have actually been borrowed time to him. That evening, I returned home emotionally exhausted. I locked my bedroom door, sat beside the window, and opened my diary. “Dear Diary… today Jack chose to protect me again. Every time he stands in front of me, I feel safe. Every time he walks away, I wonder if I’m slowly becoming the reason his life grows more dangerous. I don’t know what the future holds anymore. But I do know one thing. I don’t want to keep hiding behind my fear. If I truly want to stand beside Jack one day, then I have to become someone worthy of standing there.” I smiled faintly before turning to the next blank page, then, my pen just froze. Crimson letters slowly began appearing by themselves upon my diary page, one word at a time. “Trust no one…” I stared in horror. The ink continued writing. “The traitor already walks beside the future Alpha.” My fingers refused to move as I watched the crimson words spread across the page, as though an invisible hand was writing them in fresh blood. My heart pounded so violently against my ribs that I could hear nothing else. A cold shiver crept down my spine. My breathing became uneven as one face appeared inside my mind. Eliza. “No…” I whispered, shaking my head. “It can’t be… can it?” Before I could gather my thoughts, my phone suddenly vibrated on the desk beside me. The caller ID made my heart skip. Jack Briggs. I answered so quickly that I nearly dropped the phone. “Jack?” I asked anxiously. “Is everything alright?” For several terrifying seconds, all I heard was his heavy breathing. Then Jack finally spoke, his usually calm voice filled with urgency. “Marionette,” he said breathlessly, “listen to me very carefully. Don’t leave your room. Lock every door and every window. No matter what you hear… no matter who calls your name… don’t come outside.” My entire body froze in fear and panic. “What happened?” I asked, my voice trembling. “Jack, you’re scaring me.” “I don’t have much time,” he replied hurriedly. “Someone betrayed us. They know exactly where you are.” My blood turned cold. “Betrayed…?” I whispered. Before Jack could answer, a deafening crash exploded through the phone, followed by violent growling and people shouting. “Jack!” I screamed. “Jack, answer me!” His voice returned for only a brief second. “They’re here…” The call then abruptly ended. The room fell into complete silence. I stared at my phone, unable to breathe, then, from outside my bedroom window, came three slow, deliberate knocks. Every instinct inside me screamed not to look, but I couldn’t stop myself. With trembling hands and a heart that felt ready to burst from my chest, I slowly turned toward the window. Standing on the thick branch of the old oak tree, hidden beneath the pale moonlight, was a tall figure wearing a black cloak. I couldn’t see the person’s face, only a pair of glowing golden eyes…and a slow, terrifying smile.
