Open this diary only if you’ve ever realized that the truth you’ve spent your whole life searching for was never really hidden, it was simply waiting until you were strong enough to face it.
Dear Diary… today, I discovered that sometimes the people who love you the most are also the ones who keep the biggest secrets, and sometimes, the boy who quietly stands in front of you is carrying a burden far heavier than your own.
The courtyard of Crescent High Academy remained eerily silent after the elderly Alpha’s words settled over everyone. Hundreds of students stood frozen, their curious whispers swallowed by the heavy tension hanging in the air.
They had no idea what was truly happening. To them, the elegant elderly man was simply another wealthy businessman visiting the school. They couldn’t see the invisible battle unfolding before their eyes, a battle fought not with fists, but with authority, bloodlines, and hidden promises.
I stood behind Jack, barely able to breathe. My hands instinctively clutched the strap of my backpack, where my diary rested safely inside. Somehow, simply knowing it was there gave me a small sense of courage and relief at least. My heart pounded so violently that I feared everyone around me could hear it.
However, Jack never moved from my side, his shoulders remained straight, and although I could only see his back, I could tell he had no intention of stepping aside. It amazed me how someone so quiet could become so unshakable whenever someone threatened the people he cared about.
The elderly Alpha studied his grandson for several long moments before letting out a quiet sigh. “You’ve changed, Jack,” he said calmly, his deep voice carrying authority that demanded attention. “The boy who once obeyed every order without hesitation now chooses to challenge his own family.”
Jack lowered his head respectfully, but his feet remained rooted to the ground. “I mean no disrespect, Grandfather,” he replied politely. His voice was calm, yet every word carried unwavering resolve. “You taught me that an Alpha’s greatest responsibility is to protect those placed under his care. If I abandon Marionette now simply because the situation has become inconvenient, then I would be betraying the very lesson you raised me to believe.”
The old man’s expression remained unreadable. “You speak well,” he answered after a long pause. “Perhaps too well.”
Jack met his gaze without fear and bowed in respect, “I learned from the best.” For the briefest moment, I thought I saw pride flicker in the old Alpha’s eyes before it disappeared beneath his stern cold expression.
“You remind me too much of your father when he was young,” the old man muttered quietly. “He also believed love could change the fate of wolves.”
The words struck me harder than I expected. Love? Was he talking about Jack’s parents? Or… Was he talking about Jack?
Before anyone could continue, Max Briggs arrived, walking briskly across the courtyard with several council elders following close behind. His expression was unusually serious, and the atmosphere shifted the moment he appeared.
“Father,” Max said respectfully as he stopped before the elderly Alpha. “This conversation shouldn’t happen here.”
“I disagree,” the old Alpha replied evenly. “The girl has already become the center of our problems. She deserves to know why.”
Max glanced toward me, then toward Jack. His jaw tightened, yet he could not oppose the words of his father, “There are truths she isn’t ready to hear.”
I couldn’t stay silent any longer. “Stop deciding that for me,” I said, my voice trembling yet determined.
Every pair of eyes suddenly turned toward me and for a second, I almost regretted speaking those words. But then I remembered every sleepless night, every lie, every half-truth that had surrounded my life since meeting Jack.
I stepped out from behind him and spoke on my own. “I deserve answers,” I continued, swallowing the lump in my throat. “Everyone keeps talking about me as though I’m not standing here. They argue about protecting me, hiding things from me, deciding my future… but no one ever asks what I want.”
My voice cracked. “I don’t want to be treated like some prize.”
The courtyard became silent once more. The elderly Alpha looked at me for a long moment, then, unexpectedly, he just smiled. “You have more courage than I expected, young heiress.”
He slowly approached me, and Jack instinctively stepped forward again. His grandfather stopped and sighed. “You truly won’t let me speak to her?” he asked.
Jack looked directly into his eyes. “I won’t let anyone intimidate her.” The old Alpha chuckled softly and exclaimed, “So protective.”
He sighed again before turning his attention back to me. “Very well,” he said calmly. “Allow me to introduce myself properly.”
He straightened his posture and spoke, “I am Arthur Briggs, former Alpha King of the Briggs Bloodline and founder of the Royal Wolf Council.”
A murmur spread among the wolves, even Max lowered his head respectfully. Arthur’s eyes settled on me again, “And the reason I came today… is because your diary once belonged to my daughter.”
The world stopped around me that very moment. My breathing caught painfully inside my chest. “My… diary?”
Arthur nodded and agreed, “Yes.” I shook my head repeatedly, confused and practically short of words, “No… that’s impossible. My parents bought it for me when I was little.”
Arthur slowly closed his eyes. “No, child.” His voice softened. “They only gave it to you.”
Every memory I had involving the diary suddenly felt uncertain, the countless nights I had cried into its pages, the embarrassing confessions about Jack, the dreams, and the mysterious letters.
He almost sounded right, none of it had started with me. Arthur continued speaking. “That diary belonged to Princess Evelyn Briggs.” I frowned in surprise, “Princess?”
“The first woman chosen by the Moon Goddess to unite every wolf pack peacefully, the letters of the first Luna in the Wolf World,” Arthur explained.
Jack’s eyes widened in surprise also, “Grandfather…” Arthur raised one hand and stops him before he landed, “I’m finished hiding.” He looked directly at me. “Evelyn Briggs disappeared seventeen years ago.”
My heart skipped for a moment. “I’m seventeen…” Arthur nodded. “Exactly.”
The realization hit me like lightning, the diary, the timing, my age, the strange letter mentioning my birth, the mysterious Rowan, and my mother’s reaction. At this point, I could say that nothing could be a coincidence anymore.
I stumbled backward. “N-No…” Jack immediately caught my arm before I could lose my balance. “Easy,” he whispered gently.
His warm hand remained around mine. I didn’t pull away, for the first time since meeting him, I allowed myself to lean on someone else. “I don’t understand,” I whispered.
Arthur’s face softened slightly and he smiled, “You will.” Then his expression became serious again. “But before you learn who you truly are…” His gaze shifted toward the school entrance. “…our enemies have decided to make the first move.”
A deafening explosion suddenly echoed through the front gates. Students screamed in chaos and panic, glass shattered like an attack, and teachers shouted for everyone to run.
Smoke rapidly filled the courtyard as several black SUVs crashed through the academy entrance. Dozens of masked figures poured out, surrounding the campus with military precision.
One of them removed his mask. He possess a pair of golden eyes, and silver wolf crest on his shirt. He smiled coldly at us, approaching where we are. Then in the midst of all around, he spoke out with confidence.
“On behalf of the Sterling family…” He slowly pointed toward me. “…we’re taking the future Luna.” Jack immediately stepped in front of me, his entire body tense.
“Stay behind me,” he said firmly without looking back. My hands trembled uncontrollably. “Jack…” I called out in fear. He glanced over his shoulder, offering me a reassuring smile despite the danger surrounding us.
“I promised I’d protect you,” he said quietly. “And I don’t break my promises.” Before anyone else could move, a deafening wolf’s howl erupted from somewhere above the school.
Every Briggs wolf instantly transformed, their bodies engulfed in silver light. Students screamed in terror as the secret world finally revealed itself in broad daylight.
I stood frozen in the middle of the chaos, my diary clutched tightly against my chest. Then, without warning, it began glowing, its pages flipped wildly on their own and a single sentence appeared in shimmering silver ink.
“The Luna’s trial has begun. Choose wisely… because the first heart you trust may become the first heart you lose.”
I looked up just in time to see a masked attacker lunging toward Jack from behind with a silver blade. My voice tore from my throat, “Jack!” Now as everything is going on, the question lingered in my mind exactly: what in the world is the Luna they are practically referring to me of?
