CHAPTER 8: My Goal is You

1724 Words
Open this diary only if you’ve ever loved someone so deeply that you decided to fight for them, even when the whole world stood against you. Sometimes, love isn’t about waiting for fate to be kind. Sometimes, it’s about becoming brave enough to chase the impossible. Tonight, I made a promise, not only to my diary, but to my own heart, and I had no idea that promise would place me directly between two of the most powerful Alpha families in existence. I never slept that night because how could I after everything that happened? Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Jack transforming into that enormous black wolf. I saw the silver mark glowing on my wrist. I heard the mysterious stranger calling me “the future Luna,” as though my life had already been decided without anyone bothering to ask what I wanted. The moonlight poured through my broken window, and the cool breeze scattered a few loose pages of my diary across my bed. I picked them up one by one, smoothing the wrinkled paper with trembling fingers. This diary had listened to me long before wolves, Alphas, or secret kingdoms became part of my life. It literally knew every embarrassing crush I have had in my life, every rejected daydream, every silent tear, every tiny victory I had celebrated alone, as if there could be one thing in this confusing world that had never betrayed me, it was these pages. I opened to a fresh page and rested my pen against the paper. For several minutes, I couldn’t write a single word. There were simply too many emotions tangled together inside me, fear, confusion, embarrassment, hope, and beneath all of them… love, a ridiculous, stubborn, hopeless love that refused to disappear no matter how complicated my life became. Finally, I began writing. “Dear Diary… yesterday I thought my biggest problem was figuring out whether Jack liked Eliza. Tonight I discovered he’s the heir to an entire hidden kingdom of wolves. Somehow, instead of making me stop loving him, it only made me realize how little I truly know about him.” I paused as a tear landed on the page. I wiped it away quickly. “I’ve spent three years hiding behind these pages because I believed I wasn’t good enough to stand beside him. Maybe I’ve been wrong all along. Maybe the biggest enemy I’ve ever had isn’t Eliza… or Gabriel… or even the wolves. Maybe it’s the frightened voice inside me that keeps whispering that I’ll never deserve someone like Jack.” I stared at those words I have written in my diary, and for the first time… they felt true. Morning arrived far too quickly. The broken front door had already been replaced by workers Max Briggs had somehow summoned before sunrise. Everything about him seemed impossible. He didn’t ask people to do things, he just simply spoke, and somehow, the entire world had to obey. I watched from the kitchen window as expensive black vehicles surrounded our small house. Men wearing dark suits stood outside, scanning every direction. Our tiny neighborhood suddenly looked like it belonged in a political thriller. My father sighed heavily. “I’ve lived here for twenty years,” he muttered while rubbing his forehead. “Never once have I needed bodyguards.” Max folded his arms calmly. “Unfortunately,” he replied to my dad in an even voice, “your family no longer has the luxury of living unnoticed.” I looked toward Jack, he stood silently beneath the old tree in our yard. His eyes looked tired, almost guilty. He hadn’t looked at me since sunrise and part of me wanted to walk over, another part of me just wanted to hide forever. School reopened despite everything. I honestly wanted to stay home. How was I supposed to solve algebra after surviving a werewolf attack? Life was incredibly unfair. The moment I entered Crescent High, everyone seemed unusually excited today, students crowded around the school’s notice board, teachers whispered among themselves, I was not the only one aware today, even Mina looked confused. “What happened?” I asked her. She shrugged and replied me. “I heard two billionaire families are donating millions to the school,” she explained. “Apparently they’re both sending representatives today.” My stomach tightened because somehow… I already knew and could have guessed who they were. Then the sound of expensive engines echoed across campus. Everyone turned. A line of black luxury cars entered through the school gates. Students gasped in shock. The first door opened, and Jack stepped out like a royal. He wore the same neat uniform as everyone else, and yet somehow… knowing who he really was made everything about him feel different to me. He wasn’t just Jack anymore. He was the future Alpha King, the future ruler of the Briggs family. He walked quietly toward the entrance and behind him came Max Briggs. The principal practically bowed while welcoming him. The entire courtyard fell silent instantly as they walked in. Then suddenly, another convoy arrived. These vehicles were silver instead of black. Their arrival was louder, and more aggressive. The first door swung open, as a tall young man stepped out with effortless confidence, his golden hair shimmered beneath the morning sun. His expensive watch flashed as he adjusted his blazer. Gabriel Sterling. The boy who had asked me out almost every day. Today… He looked different, more dangerous, and more commanding. Behind him walked an older man with piercing amber eyes and an arrogant smile. The air itself seemed to become tense. Max Briggs looked at the newcomer. The newcomer looked back, and neither man smiled. “So,” the older man said with a calm voice that somehow carried across the courtyard, “the mighty Max Briggs finally leaves his mountain.” Max’s expression remained unreadable. “I could say the same to you, Victor Sterling,” he replied evenly. Students looked around in confusion because nobody understood what was happening, nobody except Jack, Gabriel and now me. Victor Sterling laughed softly. “It has been many years,” he said. “I was beginning to think the Briggs family had become afraid.” Max’s eyes became colder. “The Briggs family has never feared the Sterlings.” Gabriel stepped beside his father, his confident smile disappeared the moment he noticed me. For a brief second… His expression softened. “Marionette,” he called warmly. “I’m relieved you’re safe.” Before I could answer, Jack instinctively took one small step in front of me, the movement was subtle, almost impossible for anyone else to notice, but I noticed, and I guess my heart did too. Gabriel’s eyes narrowed at me first. “So,” he said quietly while looking at Jack, “you’re still protecting her.” Jack finally spoke, “As long as she’s in danger, I always will, father.” Those simple words made my heart pound painfully. Then Gabriel looked at me, then back at Jack. Something unreadable flashed across his face. “I see,” he murmured. Victor Sterling suddenly laughed. “This is becoming interesting,” he said. “Perhaps destiny truly enjoys making fools of proud Alpha families.” Max didn’t smile. He looks cold as ever. “Speak clearly.” Victor folded his hands behind his back, “My son has chosen that girl.” The courtyard became silent. I blinked hearing that, Chosen? Gabriel looked directly into my eyes. There was no hesitation, no embarrassment, only certainty in this man’s eyes. “I intend to make Marionette Miche my future Luna,” Gabriel declared calmly. My entire body froze in shock, in public? Students erupted into shocked whispers. “What?” “Future Luna?” “What is he talking about?” Before I could even process those words, Jack took one deliberate step forward, his voice remained calm, but there was steel hidden beneath every syllable. “Gabriel,” he said quietly, “leave her out of this.” Gabriel smiled, “I can’t.” I could see that Jack is getting serious with this. “And why not?” he asks Gabriel. “Because whether she knows it or not…” Gabriel replied, never taking his eyes off me, “…the future of both our families now revolves around her.” I stared at him, my heart pounded at first. What future were they talking about? And why me? Victor Sterling looked toward Max. “The old agreement is over,” he declared. “We no longer recognize Briggs supremacy.” Max’s eyes hardened, as his anger rose, “Be careful, Victor.” “No,” Victor answered with a smile. “You should be careful.” The smile slowly disappeared from his face, “The next Alpha King will not rule unchallenged.” A heavy silence settled over the courtyard. For the first time… Marionette finally understood that this was no longer just about her secret feelings for Jack, she was standing at the center of a war. A war between the Briggs family… and the Sterling family. As the shouting around her faded into meaningless noise, she quietly reached into her school bag and touched the cover of her diary. Inside her heart, she made a promise. “Dear Diary… I have spent three years hiding my feelings because I believed I wasn’t worthy of standing beside Jack, but not anymore. My goal isn’t simply to make him fall in love with Me. My goal is to become strong enough to stand beside him without shame, uncover every secret surrounding my birth, expose Eliza’s schemes, survive the war between the Briggs and Sterling families, and one day confess my feelings with no regrets. Even if the entire wolf world stands in my way… I refuse to let fear write the ending of my story.” She closed the diary tightly. She didn’t notice Eliza Reels watching from the second-floor balcony. Eliza’s beautiful face remained expressionless, but inside her hand… she crushed a folded document bearing the Briggs family crest. Then she whispered to herself with quiet determination, “If Marionette Miche refuses to leave Jack alone… then I’ll make sure she never gets the chance to become his Luna.”
