Chapter Three

1003 Words
“Where the hell could she have gone?” Simone asked as she stood in the driveway of the home. After leaving Simone frozen in the living room, Kira went upstairs and decided to go to bed. Waking up the next morning to apologize to Zoie, Kira entered her room only to see that Zoie was not there. As she searched around the house for her older sister, she feared that Zoie had left. Entering the living room, Kira used her powers to unbind Simone from the couch and as Simone prepared to attack, Kira announced that Zoie was missing. They both spent the entire morning searching for Zoie with no progress.  “This is why we needed phones!” Simone shouted.  “Don’t start!” Kira exclaimed. “Police would just track us.”  “I’m starting to think you’re just as crazy as Zoie!” Simone replied. “We could’ve easily called her to see where she is.”  “You really think she’d answer?” Kira shot back.  “Regardless, your safety precautions are bullshit. If she’s out there then she will be caught.” Simone revealed. Kira sighed heavily. “We are going to have to go and get her.”  “From where?” Simone yelled.  “I don’t know!” Kira shouted.  Rolling her eyes, Simone knew that they were stuck and would have to improvise. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, Simone reached over and grabbed Kira’s hand before teleporting. Kira snatched her arm away from Simone as she leaned against the wall to keep herself from falling. It was as if they had been moving at a fast speed that caused her to have whiplash. “What a weakling.” Simone teased.  “Shut the hell up.” Kira mumbled with a groan.  As Kira leaned against the wall, Simone stepped forward and looked around. She had teleported the both of them to Zoie’s former apartment. Simone sighed as she noticed that a large truck was parked outside of the apartment with a couple moving their belongings into the place. Realizing that Zoie wouldn’t be there, Simone turned faced Kira.  “She’s not here.” Simone announced.  “How do you know?” Kira asked with a groan.  “Someone’s moving into her old apartment.” Simone replied. “Let’s go.”  “No!” Kira exclaimed. “No more teleporting! I’m still not over the last!”  “Then what else are we supposed to do?” Simone asked.  Kira smiled softly as she walked down the streets with Simone trailing behind her. It had been a while since they last freely walked the streets and it felt good to finally be doing it again. Kira knew that they weren’t normal but she enjoyed pretending to be. Meanwhile, Simone mumbled to herself as she watched her younger sister excitedly look around.  “This is holding up time, Kira! Teleporting would’ve been easier!” Simone called out.  “Why? We don’t even know where we are going.” Kira replied. Simone didn't react. Unfortunately, Kira was correct. Neither of them knew where Zoie went and it incensed Simone. She had enough of her younger sisters acting like kids and not thinking carefully.  “Why would she even do this? She’s powerless and decides to sneak out! I’m telling you, Zoie’s the problem!” Kira announced.  Simone ignored Kira as she laid eyes on a newspaper that sat on a table at a restaurant. Walking over to the table, she grabbed it and read the headline. Superhumans were being taken from their homes and placed in a institution with others like them and it disgusted Simone. Slowly, Kira stopped walking as she looked back to see Simone standing at the table holding the newspaper. Confused, Kira walked towards her sister as she read the paper completely oblivious to the stares.  “What’s wrong now?” Kira asked.  “These people are being snatched from their families and it’s our fault.” Simone whispered. Kira slowly took the paper from Simone’s hands.  “I know that it’s sad but we need to focus on Zoie right now.” Kira replied.  “Focus on Zoie?” Simone asked with a scoff. “Where do we look for her at? We don’t know anything!”  Kira stood there for a second before gasping. Simone looked at her sister in confusion as Kira smiled. Simone rolled her eyes and waited for Kira to say something.  “If Zoie doesn’t have her powers then this means that I can read her mind. I can find her.” Kira revealed.  “This would’ve saved us many problems!” Simone shouted as she snatched the newspaper from Kira’s hands.  Ignoring Simone, Kira closed her eyes and let her powers takeover. She furrowed her eyebrows as she listened to everyone’s thoughts which made it hard for her to find Zoie. As she listened, Kira began to feel disappointed as she heard nothing from Zoie. As she prepared to give up, a familiar voice caught her attention causing her to open her eyes in shock.  “Hold it together, Z.” The woman guided.  “Um Kira?” Simone called out.  “Mom?” Kira mumbled.  “Kira!” Simone hissed.  Turning around quickly, Kira groaned. “Dammit Simone, I need concentration! I believe I heard something.”  “We have bigger problems to worry about.” Simone announced. The sound of police sirens coming closer had caught their attention. Turning the paper and holding it up towards Kira, Kira stared at the photo of her, Simone, and Zoie as the bottom of it read: wanted.
