Chapter One Unhappily Married
I warned you against marrying that son of a b***h, but you persisted and claimed you had everything under control. It has been three years since you married, and I have not seen any changes in him. How would you explain that?” Charleston questioned his daughter, Lillian, about her marriage to Gabriel. It is no secret that Mr. Rozelle did not want Gabriel to be his daughter's boyfriend, let alone son-in-law. Despite his concerns and disapproval, Lillian persisted and proceeded with the wedding. “Dad, will we still discuss this? It is only nine A.M. Your voice is too loud, and Gabriel could hear you. Have you forgotten he is in the living room? I propose we discuss this another time. "I would rather not have problems with my husband,” Lilian protested and fought for Gabriel even when he was not present. Despite his flaws, she still loved Gabriel, but she was perplexed by her parents' opinions. They wanted a wealthy son-in-law for a son, not a struggling man like Gabriel, who cannot even feed himself without the help of his wife, Lilian. Lilian and Gabriel dated in high school before they decided to take their relationship to the next level. She fell for Gabriel even though he was bullied and humiliated at school. The relationship, however, grew stronger after Gabriel received a scholarship. Even though everyone labelled him as the poor scholarship kid, Lilian maintained the relationship. She saw Gabriel as a genius who could help her achieve her goal in the future. "Who cares if he is listening in on our conversation right now? I do not give a damn about your alleged husband. Next time you address him, do not forget to add “Gold digger” to his title because that is undoubtedly who he is," Mr. Charleston added, unconcerned about Gabriel's attention. Shortly after, Grace, Lilian's mother, walked in and saw the two of them arguing. “Thank goodness you are here, Mum,” Lillian said, relieved to see her mother. She moved too quickly and embraced her mother, hoping she would be on her side. "I asked you a question, everyone. What exactly is going on? Your voices were audible from the outside. Is there anything you both believe I should know?” Grace continued to question and push for an answer. “It is about Gabriel,” Charleston said after a long silence. He was confident in his words but could not express himself. Grace hissed and tried to walk away after hearing her husband mention Gabriel, but Lillian pulled her back. “Mother, did you just hiss? I assumed you wanted to know why we were arguing. Mum, I cannot believe you just did this. I know you dislike Gabriel, but you did not have to react in that way. You should be respectful, Mum.” Lilian confronted her mother and asked why she hissed at the mention of Gabriel's name. “Do you want me to speak, Lilian? It is not like I owe you an explanation, but since you already asked, I will satisfy your curiosity.” Grace cleared her throat to speak. She reminds Lilian of the circumstances of her marriage to Gabriel and how they had warned her about the consequences of her actions. "Oh, no. Never again. Couldn't we do this today?” Lillian buried her face in the ground. Dad just brought up the same issue, and here you are, still thinking about it. Already, I am tired. Lilian sighed and facepalmed. “I need some fresh breath.” Her ears had already heard enough, and she wanted to donate them to charity. “Your Mum is right, Hun,” Charleston said, expressing his support for his wife. What am I supposed to expect? I knew you would be there for her,” Lillian muttered. “Oh, please, spare me!” Grace interrupted her daughter as she prepared to spill more without giving Lilian a chance to breathe. First, she mentioned how they begged her not to let Gabriel manage the family's business, but she declined. “I was going to talk about that,” Lillian interrupts. There was something I should have told you all. "Sorry, you are just getting to know me.” Lilian sparked the conversation. She revealed that she married Gabriel because of his intelligence and potential, even though she never loved him. “Damn!” Her parents widened their mouths in surprise. It took them a few minutes to recover. “Are you certain about this, daughter?” Her mother questioned Lilian's explanation and cast doubt on its authenticity. “I have never been this serious in my life, Mum,” Lilian confirmed. She was able to persuade her parents to marry Gabriel after providing them with additional information and explanations. They now understand why Lillian made the outrageous decision to marry someone like Gabriel when she could have settled for a wealthy man who would boost the family's fortunes. I can finally breathe fresh air now that I understand why you made that ridiculous move. However, instead of doing it alone, you should have told us. Remember, we are family?” Grace voiced her opinion and supported her daughter's decision. The only reason she was not too excited was that Lillian had left them out of the plan. Perhaps my plan did not work after all. Gabriel is doing nothing to save the company, which is currently in disarray. So what are we going to do now? "I am terrified,”. She wishes she had not had to put everything at risk because of Gabriel's intelligence. Lilian, who received a scholarship in high school, assumed that running a business would be easy. “Well,” Charleston cleared his throat, preparing to give the billion-dollar advice to save the situation. “Which is it?” Lillian echoed, her ears on the ground in anticipation. “Leave him!” he said without thinking twice. “What?” A male voice spoke distantly. Looking behind them, they noticed Gabriel, who appeared pale and clueless. He is quietly eavesdropping on their conversation without their knowledge. When they saw Gabriel, their minds raced, and they felt tiny shivers down their spines. He was the last person they expected to see at that particular time. They wish the ground would open up and swallow them.
